THE GOVERNMENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO MINISTRY OF EDUCATION NATIONAL CERTIFICATE OF SECONDARY EDUCATION 2011 (Level 1) PHYSICAL EDUCATION PAPER I PRACTICAL TEACHER S GUIDE

NATIONAL CERTIFICATE OF SECONDARY EDUCATION (NCSE) LEVEL PHYSICAL EDUCATION PAPER I: PRACTICAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR TEACHERS 1. In this paper, a detailed practical examination has been prepared for Physical Education. Guidelines for assessing students skill performance and skill application levels in various sporting activities are included. 2. All students must wear suitable clothing or the school s physical education uniform. 3. Students must follow all instructions.. Students will be assessed in THREE (3) activities each from the list below. I. Gymnastics or Track & Field II. III. Tennis or Badminton Netball or Basketball or Volleyball or Cricket or Football 5. Time limit for each activity should be between 5 10 minutes. 6. Groups should be manageable. A group of 3 to 5 students is recommended. 7. Safety precautions must be put in place for all activities. 8. Schools/teachers will arrange for the assessment of students over the two-week period scheduled for examination. 9. Mark sheets are to be completed and must be forwarded to the Division of Educational Research and Evaluation, #18 Abercromby Street, Port of Spain. 1

I. Students must be assessed in ONE (1) activity from 1(a): Educational Gymnastics or 1(b): Track and Field. 1(a) EDUCATIONAL GYMNASTICS Students will demonstrate educational gymnastic skills showing good form and technique. Task/Item: The student will create and perform an educational gymnastics routine involving one activity from each of the following categories. Weight bearing Weight transference Vaulting Crab back Forward roll Astride vault V-sit Backward roll Through vault Head stand Cart-wheel Cat spring Hand stand Equipment/Resources: Gymnastic mats, vault, benches, box and spring board The performance should not exceed one minute. A verbal description of the routine shall be presented before the performance. Spotters must be provided for all students. Two opportunities shall be given to execute the routine. Each routine is to be assessed holistically. Guidelines will be provided at a standardization meeting scheduled by the DERE. Students will demonstrate proper techniques in the appropriate track and field activities. 1(b) TRACK AND FIELD TRACK Task/Item: The student will perform one of the following: crouch start, non-visual baton passing or hurdling. Equipment /Resources: Suitable area and equipment, batons, cones, flags and hurdles. A 30m sprint will be executed from the crouch start. The incoming runner will sprint from approximately 20m before the change over zone for the baton exchange. The outgoing runner will sprint for approximately 20m after receiving the baton. Three hurdles will be placed equal distances apart at a moderate height. A sprint of approximately 10m will be executed from the last hurdle. FIELD Task/Item: Student will apply the correct technique when executing one of the following: shot, discus, javelin, long jump, or high jump in the appropriately marked area. Resources/Equipment: Suitable area and equipment; shot put 3kg/ kg.; discus 1 kg; javelin - 600g. A standing throw will be accepted for the discus and shot. A three stride approach will be acceptable for the javelin throw. A modified approach run will be accepted for the long and high jumps. 3

II. Select ONE (1) activity from 2(a) Tennis or 2(b) Badminton 2(a) TENNIS Students will demonstrate the basic strokes in tennis. Task/Item: The student will execute the forehand and backhand drives when playing balls that are tossed or served. Equipment/ Resources: Tennis racquets, tennis balls, tennis net or rope, hard indoor or outdoor surface large enough to mark off a playing area of dimensions 8m x 13m. Net or Rope Receiver stands at centre of baseline 8m Server stands a comfortable distance from the net to successfully toss or serve the ball Areas for balls to be served or tossed into e 13m 5

Administrative Conditions The ball is served from the opposite side of the net using a bounce serve or an underhand toss. Areas are marked off on the left and right of the receiver s side of the court. The server sends three (3) balls to the right and three to the left of the receiver. The server must wait until the receiver returns to the ready position before the next ball is sent. The receiver stands at the centre of the base line on one side of the court. The receiver will play the ball over the net using the appropriate groundstroke. Task/Criteria SCORES Total 5 3 0-2 10 Forehand drive Backhand Drive 3 7 5 Excellent; Good; 3 Satisfactory; 0 or 2 - Below Required Standard 6

2(b) BADMINTON Students will demonstrate the basic skills in badminton. Task/ Item: The student will apply skills of serving, forehand and backhand strokes in a modified game of badminton. Equipment/Resources: Badminton Court /Large enough marked indoor area, badminton racquets and shuttle cocks. Two pairs take to the court and begin the game with a serve. Each player must serve at least three (3) times and continue a rally. Positions on court will be rotated. Task/Criteria SCORES Total 5 3 0-2 10 Serving 3 Backhand/ Forehand 7 5 Excellent; Good; 3 Satisfactory; 0 to 2 - Below Required Standard 7

III. Select ONE (1) activity from 3(a) Netball, 3(b) Basketball, 3(c) Volleyball, 3(d) Cricket or 3(e) Football. 3(a) NETBALL Students will apply the appropriate netball skills. Task/Item: Students will participate in a modified game of netball, applying the skills appropriately. Equipment /Resources: A student umpire, suitably marked playing area, poles, balls, bibs, cones and whistles. On a half court, two teams of four () players (GS/GK, GA/ GD, WA/WD C) will play a modified game of netball. The game will consist of two halves of five (5) minutes each. At the end of each half, players rotate positions. Standard rules shall apply. Task/Criteria SCORES Total 5 3 0-2 10 Skill Application Tactics/Rules 5 9 5 Excellent; Good; 3 Satisfactory; 0 to 2 - Below Required Standard 8

3(b) BASKETBALL Students will apply the appropriate basketball skills. Task: Students will participate in a modified game of basketball, applying skills appropriately. Equipment /Resources: A student referee, suitably marked playing area, baskets, balls, cones and whistles Two teams of three players will play a modified game. The game will consist of two halves of five minutes each. Standard rules apply. 3(c) VOLLEYBALL Students will apply the appropriate volleyball skills. Task/ Item: Students will participate in a modified game of volleyball applying appropriate skills. Equipment/Resources: A student referee, volleyballs, suitably-marked playing area, net, rope and cones. The game will be played with four () players per team. There will be two front and two back line players. The service (underarm) is taken behind the 3m line. After each point the service goes to the other side and players rotate. The game continues until each player serves twice. Spiking should not be allowed. Standard rules apply. Task/Criteria SCORES Total 5 3 0-2 10 Skill Application Tactics/Rules 3 7 5 Excellent; Good; 3 Satisfactory; 0 to 2 - Below Required Standard 10

3(d) CRICKET Students will apply appropriate cricket skills. Task/Item: Students are arranged in pairs in a game of double wicket. Equipment/Resources: A student umpire, wickets, bats, balls, cones and a suitably-marked playing area Administrative Conditions All students participate at the same time in an appropriate playing area. One pair batting. One pair wicket keeping and bowling. The rest are in fielding positions. Rotate after each pair has batted for two overs. Standard rules apply. 3(e) FOOTBALL Students will apply appropriate football skills. Task/ Item: Students will participate in a modified game of football. Equipment/Resources: A student referee, football, cones, whistle, bibs and suitably-marked playing area. Two teams of four () players will play the game in an appropriate area. The ball should not be returned to the person from whom it was received. The game shall consist of two halves of five minutes each. Standard rules apply.
