STAFF V ARMY CHARITY RUGBY MATCH On the 29 th August, 2012, Marist College Ashgrove Old Boy Lance Corporal Stephan Rick Milosevic was killed in action whilst serving for the Australian Defence Force in Afghanistan. Rick s funeral was held at the College later that year. Rick is survived by his partner, Kelly, daughters Sarah and Kate, mother, brothers and sisters. In order to support Rick s family, the regiment that Rick served with, and the men with whom he played rugby socially, have approached the school to play a charity match against the staff of Rick s old school, Marist College Ashgrove, with all proceeds going to his family. After careful consideration, the College has agreed to this and has scheduled the game on the 29 th March at 3:30PM in place of our usual 1 st XV game and immediately following the conclusion of the College internal trial games. All members of the College community are invited to attend this event and spectators will be asked to make a gold coin donation in order to watch the game. So far, the following staff have volunteered: - Mr Chris Rynders (Jnr School) - Mr Dean Williams (Jnr School) - Mr Michael Lynagh (HPE) - Mr Ryan Apps (Jnr School) - Mr Josh Grinter (Snr School) - Mr Jeff De Heus (Snr School) - Mr Peter McIntosh (Snr School) - Mr Craig Robinson (Snr School) - Mr Jorge Ruiz (College Councillor) - Mr Pat Webster (Snr School) - Mr Brad Neilsen (Snr School) - Mr Phill Holding (Head of Sport) Boys have been encouraged to (respectfully) approach members of staff who they would like to see play and this list is growing each day. There are also a number of boarding supervisors and Rugby Coaches who have volunteered to play. The day looks to be a fantastic event and I encourage the extended College Community to throw their support behind the day.

WET WEATHER ANNOUNCEMENTS Despite the best efforts of the sports departments to push for games to be played where possible, it is inevitable that the weather will cause some games and training to be cancelled. Parents and students are encouraged to follow MCA Secondary Sports on twitter for the most up to date announcements regarding training and games. http://twitter.com/mcaseniorsport This can be accessed by both the internet and via most telephones and I encourage all parents and students to sign up and follow MCA Secondary Sport as this will be the first place that any announcements will be made regarding wet weather notices. Those with an iphone or similar can download the twitter app and receive instant updates directly to their phones free of charge. I encourage all parents and boys to visit the College web site and follow the links which explain how to create your own twitter account and follow us. PLEASE NOTE: Boys/families should not assume that games are cancelled. If no notification has been given, players should attend their schedule matches as usual.

COMMUNITY ADVERTISEMENTS

Next Gen Rugby Coaching was formed in February 2013 and specialises in the development of young rugby players (aged 6 to 17) of all ability levels. The company is holding a junior clinic in the Easter holidays at Ashgrove (April 9, 10 & 11). Next Gen has already established a fine reputation following its highly successful clinics last year. The exceptional level and quality of the coaching staff (highlighted with 2 ARU Elite Level 3 Coaches as well as 3 former International rugby players), the developmental program that was able to provide an informative and fun approach, and the challenging nature of the activities were just some of the positive outcomes from the clinic. Any player who wishes to improve his own rugby skills and techniques in an environment that provides highly professional coaching in a safe, supportive and enjoyable atmosphere, should take advantage of this wonderful opportunity provided by Next Gen Rugby Coaching. Players aged 6 17, are at a perfect age to utilise the benefits of the learning environment offered by Next Gen Coaching. There is no doubt that attending such a clinic will indeed assist players in developing their own personal skills, which in turn will provide them with every opportunity to gain selection into an appropriate team. Please see flyer attached for further details about this clinic, contact details and cost of involvement.

MCA Cross Country 2014 Coordinator: Pat Webster websterp@marash.qld.edu.au Our Cross Country season starts next week and it has been wonderful to see such an enthusiastic turnout to our information meeting on Wednesday. We had over 100 boys express their interest in being part of this year s program, and it is hoped that this eagerness will be maintained throughout the season. Impressive numbers at MARC (Marist Ashgrove Running Club) throughout the year so far gives this season plenty of promise. My sincere thanks to Peter Lehman who has coordinated this pre-season program, and in the process, helped build a wonderful running culture in the College. 1. Season Launch: Maccas Runs next week (Week 9 Mon, Tues & Wed) We launch our season next week through as series of Maccas Runs to Newmarket McDonalds. We will meet at the Gym beforehand for a usual 7am start. Remember to take some cash for your Maccas breakfast. A bus has been booked to take you back to school at around 8am for each of these days. For bus logistics and organisational reasons, we would prefer the following age groups to attend on the days listed below. U13: Monday 24/3 U14: Tuesday 25/3 U15: Wednesday 26/3 U16: Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday (leading & encouraging the younger years) Open: Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday (leading & encouraging the younger years) If your allocated morning is a problem due to other commitments (ie. music, cricket), you may still attend on another day just let Mr Webster know. 2. Regular Training Commencement Date, Starting Time & Location: We will commence regular training in Week 10 (week beginning 31/3). We will meet at the Gym at 7am sharp each day please arrive before then so we ll be ready to leave on time. Training days will be Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday, and it is hoped that squad members can make at least two of these sessions per week. Please keep myself and your specific Age Group Coordinator in the loop if this is going to be a problem due to other commitments. 3. Holiday Training: Please note that we will hold two training sessions per week over the course of the Easter & June Holidays. These will be at various locations, however, we will always meet at school first. These are dates are outlined in the Season Calendar. These are not compulsory but it would be fantastic if you could make at least one session over the breaks. 4. Training Attire All students are expected to purchase the bumblebee Cross Country/Athletics singlet the same one in which we race in on AIC Day. The coaching staff want to build a sense of pride in this singlet, therefore, we will be using this as our training attire for this year. 4.1 Embroidery option We are going to give you the option of having an acknowledgement of your commitment to Cross Country via an embroidery on the training/aic singlet. You will have the option to apply for this embroidery via an email through Mr Webster who will collect all the singlets and organise this each year. If you have attended enough sessions, and Mr Webster is satisfied with your commitment to the program, he will give the go-ahead for this to take place. The embroidery will read XC 2014 on the opposite side to the College crest on the singlet. It will be done so allowing for enough room to include and acknowledge subsequent years of involvement. 5. Edmodo Group Please be advised that we have started a XC group on Edmodo it s called MCA Cross Country 2014 and the group code is em3gtg please use this code to add yourself to the group. Mr Grinter and I will use this site regularly to post information and messages regarding this year's program and events.
