OHIO STATE SOCIAL MEDIA facebook.com/ ohiostatemensgymnastics @OhioState_MGYM @OhioState_MGYM COLUMBUS, Ohio - The third-ranked Ohio State men s gymnastics team is headed east for the 2017 NCAA Championships. The event will take place on Friday (qualifying round) and Saturday (finals) in West Point, N.Y., at the Christl Arena. The Rundown Ohio State enters the NCAA Championships with a 15-2 (13-1 Big Ten) record. The only two losses suffered by the Buckeyes came against No. 1 Oklahoma (March 11) and No. 4 Illinois (January 14). Ohio State is averaging 418.050 points per meet against opponents this season, which ranks No. 3 in the nation. In Friday s qualifying session, Ohio State will be lumped in with No. 2 Stanford, No. 9 Michigan, No. 7 Nebraska, No. 6 Penn State and No. 11 Air Force. In order to advance to the team finals, Ohio State will need to register one of the three highest scores of its session. Golden Buckeyes at Big Ten s Ohio State won its 14th Big Ten title two weeks ago in Champaign, Ill., with a team score of 418.600 to edge Illinois (416.400) and Minnesota (413.300). Team captains Sean Melton (85.050) and Jake Martin (83.300) paced the way for Ohio State, finishing one-two in the all-around. Melton became the third Buckeye in program history to win back-to-back all-around titles at Big Ten s. Martin returned a day after competing in the all-around and was the only Buckeye to win an individual title. The redshirt senior threw down a 14.375 for the title on the high bar. Melton was named the inaugural Big Ten Gymnast of the Championships as well as receiving First Team All-Big Ten honors. Martin joined Melton on the First Team, and Alec Yoder, Seth Delbridge and Jake Dastrup were named to the Second Team. EVENT TITLES Ohio State has racked up 33 event titles thus far in 2017. Martin and Melton pace the Buckeyes with nine and seven titles, respectively. Alec Yoder owns four event titles, all on the pommel horse. NCAA Championship History Ohio State has won three NCAA team titles, with the most recent title coming in 2001 at St. John Arena. Three members of the 2001 squad notched individual event championship titles as Jamie Natalie won the all-around, Daren Lynch won on vault and Raj Bhavsar, a 2008 U.S. Olympian, won on parallel bars. OSU won its second national crown at the 1996 NCAA Championships. Blaine Wilson captured the all-around, rings and parallel bars titles while Drew Durbin earned a national championship on pommel horse. The Buckeyes won the program s first national championship in 1985. Twin brothers Noah and Seth Riskin were named co-champions on parallel bars at the event finals. Ohio State gymnasts have earned 28 NCAA individual championships. Most recently, Alex Johnson won the 2016 NCAA Championship on the high bar. Wilson leads the Ohio State record books with six national championships, followed by Durbin and Natalie with three each. MELTON NAMED TO U.S. NATIONAL TEAM Following his performance at the 2017 Winter Cup, redshirt junior Sean Melton has been selected to represent the U.S. National Team this year. A native of Orlando, Fla., Melton placed third on parallel bars (28.000), fourth on rings (29.250), fifth on high bar (26.950) and sixth on the floor (28.150) during the two-day event to earn the honors. *All scores/averages in this release are based off of four-score averages Ohio State Rotation Order 1. MARTIN CO-B1G GYMNAST OF THE YEAR Fifth-year senior Jake Martin became the seventh Buckeye in program history to earn Big Ten Gymnast of the Year honors. Martin will share the award with Justin Karstadt of Minnesota; this is the first time in Big Ten history that their has been Co-Gymnast s of the Year. The Oviedo, Fla., native has won eight event titles in 2017. Four of those have come in the all-around in which he owns the sixth-best four-score average in the nation with an 83.017. He has won three high bar event titles this season, and he ranks fourth in the event in the NCAA with a four-score average of 14.633. His lone other event title came at the home opener against UIC on the rings where he scored a season best 14.050. In addition to being named the Big Ten Co-Gymnast of the Year, Martin is also a finalist for the Nissen-Emery Award. In order for an athlete to be considered for the award, one must excel in gymnastics, display good sportsmanship and maintain a high standard of scholarship throughout their career. ALL-AMERICAN RETURNEES The Buckeyes have four All-Americans returning from last year s third-place showing at the NCAA Championships. 2016 Big Ten Gymnast of the Year and All-American, Sean Melton, will look to lead the Scarlet and Gray back to the NCAA Championships. Other All-Americans returning include Alec Yoder, Seth Delbridge and Alex Wilson. CARDIAC CREW Ohio State enters the Big Ten Championships with ample experience in close meets. Just in 2017, Ohio State has had three meets that have come down to the final rotation. The first of the three thrillers came against Penn State in February. Entering the final rotation on parallel bars, the Buckeyes trailed by.85 points. Ohio State registered a 70.150 to surpass the Nittany Lions, coming away with a 419.150-417.750 win. On March 9 against Minnesota, Ohio State won a little bit more comfortable with a final tally of 415.250-413.300 over the Golden Gophers. The Buckeyes won five event titles and closed the meet out on high bar with a score of 67.450. Two weeks ago against Illinois, the Buckeyes trailed through four rotations. Ohio State outscored the Fighting Illini 138.500-136.350 in the final two events to come away with a 416.850-415.250 win. Sean Melton s parallel-bar title was instrumental in the comeback. MELTON, MARTIN & RICKLY NAMED TEAM CAPTAINS Seniors Jake Martin and Andrew Rickly along with redshirt junior, Sean Melton, were elected team captains for the 2016-17 season. The Buckeyes will be led by a trio of captains for a third-consecutive season and only the seventh time in the history of the program. The first time the squad featured three captains was 2001, when the Buckeyes won their last national championship. 2017 SEASON HIGHS AND CAREER HIGHS Floor Pommel Horse Rings Vault Parallel Bars High Bar All-Around Gymnast 2017 Career 2017 Career 2017 Career 2017 Career 2017 Career 2017 Career 2017 Career Evan Bluemel - - 13.10 14.60 - - - - - - - - - - Joey Bonanno 14.25* 14.25* - - - - 13.75* 13.75* - - - - - - Andrew Brower - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Tristan Burke 13.50 14.95 14.15 14.65 15.20 14.50 15.45 13.70 14.45 12.70 13.75 78.0086.00 Michael Chan 14.20* 14.20* - - - - 14.25* 14.25* - - 14.05* 14.05* - - Chris Coombs 14.00* 14.00* - - 14.40* 14.40* - - - - - - - - Robert Costea - - 8.90* 8.90* 13.40* 13.40* - - - - - - - - Jake Dastrup 14.45 15.40 14.90* 14.90* - - 14.40 15.15 14.80 15.40 - - - - ALEX WILSON Seth Delbridge 14.70* 14.70* - - 13.70* 13.70* 14.92515.35 13.60 14.55 14.35 15.05 76.50 76.50 Samuel DeWitt - - 13.30-14.85 - - - - - - - - Josh Hurwitz - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Brandon Jacoby - 13.85 14.60* 14.60* - - - - - - - - - - Ryan Lemezis - - - - 14.55* 14.55* - - - - - - - - Jake Martin 14.30 15.35 14.80 15.60 14.05 15.15 14.30 15.50 14.35 15.40 14.85 15.80 85.30 89.45 Paris McGee Jr. 13.45 13.45 - - - - 14.45 14.25 - - - - - - Logan Melander - 14.30 13.90 14.80 13.70* 13.70* - 15.15 - - 13.35 14.25 - - Sean Melton 15.05* 15.05* 13.10 15.35 15.20 16.05 14.55 15.35 14.70 16.175 14.55 15.55 85.05 91.60 Andrew Rickly - 13.00 - - - 14.10 - - 14.35* 14.35* 14.50 15.25 - - Joey Smith - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Coleson Stodghill - - - - - - - - - - 13.00* 13.00* - - David Szarvas - - 14.30* 14.30* - - - - - - - - - - Meyer Williams 14.15 15.30 - - - - 14.05 14.70 13.55* 13.55* 12.55* 12.55* - - Alex Wilson - 15.30-12.65 13.50 14.65-15.25-15.20 - - - - Alec Yoder 13.95 15.20 15.40* 15.40* - 15.60 14.55* 14.55* 14.70* 14.70* 13.5015.15-90.15 * the FIG revised the Code of Points after the 2016 Rio Olympics. RUSTAM SHARIPOV HEAD COACH KHARKOV, UKRAINE SIXTH SEASON Rustam Sharipov (roos-tom SHARE-ee-pahv) was named the head coach of the Ohio State men s gymnastics team in the summer of 2011. Sharipov, previously an assistant coach at the University of Oklahoma from 2005-11, brings the experience of three Olympic medals, including two gold, to Columbus as the eighth head coach in program history. Last season, Ohio State was named the preseason favorite in the Big Ten and ranked No. 3 in the nation prior to losing its Top 3 gymnasts to injury. The Buckeyes would go on to finish fifth at the Big Ten championships and NCAA Qualifier, with Drew Moling (rings) and Alex Johnson (high bar) earning All-America honors. Johnson also won his first career Big Ten title on high bar. The 2014 CGA Central Regional Coach of the Year, Sharipov led the Buckeyes to a fifth-place finish at the NCAA championships and a second-place finish at the Big Ten championships during the 2014 season. Sharipov helped Sean Melton to four All-American awards, Big Ten freshman of the year honors and Big Ten individual championships on high bar and parallel bars. Jake Martin was a two-event All-American and Big Ten champion on vault, while Jeff Treleaven earned his third All-American honor on vault and Johnson his first All-American award on high bar. Throughout the 2014 season, Sharipov coached the Buckeyes to a program-record team score of 446.150, (the sixth-highest score all-time) in a Senior Day upset win over No. 1 Oklahoma in addition to new team program records on all six events and new individual program records on four events (pommel horse, vault, parallel bars and high bar). In 2013, Sharipov guided Michael Newburger to the 2013 NCAA Championship on pommel horse. The Austin, Texas, native scored a 15.450 to become only the second gymnast in program history to win a nationaltitle on pommel. In addition to Newburger, Sharipov coached Danny Steiner and Treleaven to All-America honors on floor exercise and vault, respectively, at the 2013 NCAA Individual Event Finals. Ohio State placed fourth overall at the 2013 Big Ten Championships, one place higher than the previous season. Under Sharipov s guidance, Steiner placed second overall on floor exercise, earning Second Team All-Big Ten honors for his performance. Sharipov led the Buckeyes to a record-setting season in 2012, as five members of the team (Ty Echard, Misha Koudinov, Kris Done, Newburger and Steiner) earned All-America status at the 2012 NCAA Individual Event Finals, tying the season program record with the 1993 and 2002 campaigns, respectively. Sharipov coached Echard, a 2012 Nissen-Emery Award finalist, to a share of the Big Ten pommel horse title and subsequent First Team All-Big Ten honors. He also guided Koudinov to a third-place tie on floor exercise and a second-place finish on parallel bars at the Big Ten championships. A native of Kharkov, Ukraine, Sharipov was named 2006 National Co-Assistant Coach of the Year, helping the Sooners claim the NCAA championship that year. In 2008, Sharipov helped guide the team to a second national title and was named co-assistant coach of the year for the second time in his career. In 2011, he was named the CGA West Region assistant coach of the year, leading the Sooners to an NCAA runner-up finish in the team finals. After retiring from competitive gymnastics in 2000, Sharipov moved to the United States and began his coaching career at the Bart Conner Gymnastics Academy in Norman, Okla. After one year, Sharipov accepted a coaching position at the Houston Gymnastics Academy where he worked with some of the top gymnasts in the nation, including U.S. national team members Sean Townsend and Todd Thornton. In 2004, he was the head coach for the U.S. team that won the gold medal at the Junior Pacific Alliance Competition and in 2002 was the coach of the U.S. team that took gold at the Junior Pan American Games. As a gymnast, Sharipov began his competitive career as the Soviet junior national champion in 1989 before bringing home the all-around championship at the 1990 U.S. Olympic Cup. Sharipov helped the Unified Team to an Olympic gold medal at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. He put on a show at the 1992 European Championships, winning high bar and taking second on parallel bars. Sharipov also took first on parallel bars at the CIS championships and the DTB Cup, and added a high bar championship at the Tokyo Cup. In 1993 Sharipov continued his success, taking first in the all-around at both the Nikon International and the International Championships of Romania, along with a third-place finish in the event at the European Cup. At the 1994 World Championships, Sharipov was a member of the third-place team and was the runner-up on parallel bars. In 1995, after winning championships on parallel bars at the French International and the Cottbus International along with an all-around title at the International Championships of Romania, Sharipov had an impressive showing at the European Cup, winning gold on high bar and parallel bars. He followed that up in 1996 with perhaps the best year of his career, taking first on parallel bars at the European championships before addinga gold medalon the sameapparatus at the World championships. The crowning moment of Sharipov s athletic career came at the 1996 Olympic Gamesin Atlanta, where he won the gold medal on parallel bars and was a member of the bronze-medal Ukrainian team. A 1997 graduate of Kharkov State in Ukraine, Sharipov was awarded the title of Master of Sport in 1992. The honor represents the highest athletic level one can reach in the former Soviet Union. Sharipov and his wife, Amber, have four daughters: Ksenia, Maya, Isabella, and Lilia; and one son, Raistlin.
