PREFACE This book is dedicated to players, coaches, and fans of Bronco girls basketball to whom over the years have been ambassadors of the great game of basketball. It is the hope that this book will be a source of history of the Bronco girls basketball program, and to be a guide to the many great memories of triumphant games and also to the difficult memories of heart-breaking defeats of the past. I wish to thank the following people for their help with putting this information together. First, the people at the International Falls Library who took the time to assist with finding many past newspapers and yearbooks. Second, the coaches who retained the vital information needed for this book. Third, the many people who helped with the little problems, but found big solutions. Finally, Stuart Nordquist, who kindled my interest in the history of all Bronco athletics and without whose original vision and love for Bronco athletics, this book would not have been possible. Timm Ringhofer 1

LOOKING BACK The history of girls basketball at Falls High School is a disjointed one. The first girls team played during the 1924-1925 school year and recorded a perfect 9-0 record. Elvira Ehnbom was the first coach as the team defeated teams from Baudette, Blackduck, Littlefork, Northome, and Warroad. The girls interscholastic team continued to compete until the 1926-1927 school year. Intramural basketball for the girls continued until the 1970 s through the Girls Athletic Association (GAA), when a varsity girls team was established under coach Laurie Kohler (1974-1978). Many of the first scheduled games were cancelled or postponed due to a variety of reasons. These include the January 9, 1975, Storm of the Century and other schools having concerts scheduled that conflicted with the basketball games. The Broncos first game was finally played at Tower versus Tower-Soudan on January 17, 1975, and the Broncos were victorious, 33-21. The first home game was played on January 21, 1975. Fort Frances traveled across the river and were defeated by the Broncos, 37-31. Two state tournaments were played for the 1974-1975 school year, one in the fall and one in the winter. The Broncos played during the winter season and competed in District 27 of Region 7. For the 1975-76 season through the 1983-84 season, the Broncos were assigned to play in Sub-Region 4 of Region 7AA, which was the larger of the two classes, AA and A. The early teams were successful having above.500 records and playing for the District 27 or Sub-Region 4 title for the first six seasons of Bronco girls basketball (1975-1980), finally winning their first title in 1980 under coach Kevin Dowty (1978-1997) in his second season as head coach. 2

Kevin Dowty s nineteen years as head coach is the longest tenure of any Bronco basketball coach, boys or girls. The Broncos record vacillated above and below the.500 mark until a late-eighties surge when the Broncos won three consecutive Region 7AA titles from 1988 to 1990. The Broncos best finish at the state tournament was a fourth place in 1989. The 1988-1989 season also included the first Iron Range Conference championship in program history and set the standard for wins in a season with a final record of 23-3. The 1983-1984 season brought around a change to Region 7AA as the number of sub-regions changed from four to three. This change allowed teams to lose in the first or second round of subregions and still qualify to play in the region tournament. The 1991-1992 season brought a significant change to the Broncos schedule and postseason tournament as declining enrollment switched the team from Class AA to Class A. This placed the Broncos in with the old District 27 teams in the newly formed Arrowhead Conference and Sub-Section 3 of Region 7A. However, the Broncos were unable to participate in the sub-section tournament in the 1991-1992 season. The players honored the teachers strike and decided not to play any games while the teachers were on strike. The Broncos again were around the.500 mark in the early-nineties until the fortunes of the team took an upswing in the mid-nineties. The Broncos defeated Mesabi East for the Sub- Section 3 title in 1995-1996. The 1996-1997 season produced another major change as the Minnesota State High School League changed basketball from two classes to four classes. The Broncos were placed in Section 7AA. The 1996-1997 season was also the last for Kevin Dowty, who finished his career with a 246-177 record. Matt Urbanek (1997-1998) took over for Dowty and remained with the team for only one 3

season. He resigned to take the Bronco boys basketball head coaching position. Longtime assistant coach Rick DeBenedet (1998-2005) took over as the Bronco head coach, and became the first non-faculty member to be head coach in the history of the girls basketball program. During DeBenedet s tenure, the fortunes of the program took a downturn in the late-nineties and beginning of the new millennium. However, beginning with 2001-2002 season, the Broncos had four consecutive seasons of double-digit wins culminating with an appearance in the 2005 Section 7AA championship game versus Pequot Lakes. Shawn Gilbert (2005-2016) became the fifth head coach in Bronco girls basketball history and the second consecutive non-faculty member. Beginning with the 2005-2006 season, the length of the game was changed from four eight-minute quarters to two eighteen-minute halves. Under Gilbert s guidance, the Broncos continued to have double-digit or near double-digit win seasons, but were unable to advance to the quarterfinal round of the Section 7AA playoffs until the 2009-2010 season. During the 2010-2011, the Broncos took the next step in the Section 7AA playoffs by advancing to the semifinals before losing to eventual state champion, Braham, and achieving their first above.500 record under Gilbert s leadership. In 2011-2012, Littlefork-Big Falls joined the Arrowhead Conference and four conference schools; Cook and Orr, and Babbitt-Embarrass and Tower-Soudan; combined to form two new schools, North Woods and Northeast Range. The Broncos won 20 games for the first time since the 1995-96 season before losing in the semifinal of the Section 7AA to Braham. International Falls again attained the 20-win plateau in the 2012-2013 season by winning 21 games and for the third consecutive season were defeated by Braham in the Section 7AA semifinals. A third consecutive 20-win season followed in the 4

2013-2014 season as the Broncos matched their 21-8 record from the previous season, but lost in Section 7AA semifinals for the fourth consecutive year. The 2013-2014 Broncos won the Iron Range Conference championship for the first time since 1989 and did it without a loss. The 2014-2015 Broncos were finally able to break through to the Section 7AA finals but fell to Esko in the championship game. The Broncos also won a second consecutive undefeated Iron Range Conference championship, won 20 regular season games for the first time in program history, and tied the program record with 23 wins in a season. During the 2015-2016 season, the Falls was able to reach the Section 7AA semifinals for the sixth consecutive season. Jay Boyle (2016-2018) was named the head coach beginning with the 2016-2017 season and the first head coach to be a member of the faculty since 1997-1998. The Broncos compiled an 18-9 record and played in the Section 7AA semifinals for the seventh straight season in Boyle s first season. The 2017-2018 finished the season with a record of 15-11 and lost in the opening round of the Section 7AA playoffs to Virginia. The 2017-2018 season ended the 44-year modern history of girls basketball. 5
