Scpe: All staff Plicy Statement: Cntrl f the Envirnment: Hard surfaces within the dental surgery the lcal decntaminatin unit (LDU) and the wider practice area may becme directly r indirectly cntaminated with bld, saliva and ral secretins cntaining bacteria, viruses, etc. Thrugh cleaning will reduce the risk f infectin via the hard surfaces within the practice. Staff are trained in envirnmental cleaning as part f their Infectin Cntrl inductin and their cntinuing prfessinal develpment. A recrd is kept f this training. Envirnmental cleaning is carried ut befre and after every treatment episde and at the beginning and end f every clinical sessin, with the level f surface cleaning required assessed n a case by case basis. Envirnmental cleaning is als carried ut during and after the decntaminatin prcess. Suitable PPE is used fr all envirnmental cleaning tasks. Cleaning f all areas f the practice utside the surgery and lcal decntaminatin unit is carried ut staff members as part f a cleaning rta, accrding t the practice s prcedures and cleaning schedule. Envirnmental Cleaning Prcedures: Risk assess the treatment episde carried ut fr each patient t decide the level f surface cleaning required. Fr example, surfaces will be cntaminated up t a 1m radius if rtary instruments have been used n a patient, whereas an examinatin nly will nt create significant aersl risk. Rutes f cntaminatin t be cnsidered at all times are: airbrne particles fllwing use f rtary instruments splatter during surgical prcedures drplets frm cughs and sneezes tuching surfaces and bjects with cntaminated hands. 2
Clinical areas and LDU: General: Keep all surfaces in the surgery and LDU as clear and clutter free as pssible t give easy access fr cleaning. Avid piles f papers patient ntes r equipement. Keep as many items as pssible wrapped r in a bx and in cupbards r cvered. Ensure clean r dirty areas are clearly defined and maintained. Clean all large surfaces, clean and dirty areas, at the end f a sessin using warm water and general purpse detergent with dispsable clths. Fllwing clinical prcedures Clean all surfaces that have ptentially been cntaminated with bld, saliva r by tuch. Clean the X-ray machines, light handles, and curing lights etc. Clinel Detergent wipes can be used fr cleaning small surface areas between patients. Remve significant cntaminatin e.g. splatter f saliva, cntaminatin frm aersls, etc with Clinel detergent wipes. Alchl wipes alne will nt remve prtein residues and are nt used. (always emply PPE) Deal with bld spillages by dnning apprpriate PPE (see PPE plicy) and either apply chlrine releasing granules directly t the spill r cntain the spillage using dispsable paper twels, then saturate with sdium hypchlrite 10 000 ppm. Leave in place as recmmended in the manufacturers instructins r fr at least 3 minutes. Dispse f twels as healthcare waste. Clean the cntaminated area with detergent and warm water using dispsable paper twels. Discard paper twels and dispsable PPE int clinical waste and carry ut hand hygiene. Fr ther bdy fluid spillages (e.g. urine, vmit) refer t Other Bdy Fluid Spillages plicy. Management f Bld and Nn clinical areas: Tilet: Clean tilet area by cleaning twards the tilet and sink plug hle, therefre nt spread bacteria ut frm the mst cntaminated areas. Use bucket and mp designated t the tilet. Fill bucket with warm water and detergent and wipe dr, dr frame, dr handles, walls dwn t skirting bards. Then clean sink 3
taps, sink dwn t plug hle, clean light switch/pull crd then tilet frm tp t bttm then arund tilet seat. Pr cntents f bucket dwn tilet and re-fill bucket with warm water and detergent and mp frm drway t tilet then back frm tilet t dr way and empty bucket in the utside drain. Receptin: Clean frank dirt and debris with warm water with detergent and a clth. Then plish with furniture plish. Used cleaning aprns and thick rubber glves. Clean lamp shades with glass plish r duster if requires. Ensure lights are switched ff when cleaning them. Frnt and rear crridrs: Hver carpeted areas r sweep then mp n carpeted areas. Clean dr frames and skirting bards with warm sapy water. Clean light fittings and fixtures with glass cleaner r a duster. Always ensure lights are switched ff when cleaning them. Strage cupbards & staff lckers: Remve cntents and make nte f lcatin. Wipe surface with water and detergent as required. Dry with paper twels and return cntents.
