THE TOP 100 KEYWORDS FOR AN OPHTHALMOLOGY PRACTICE

Introduction to Search Engine Optimization for Ophthalmology Search Engine Optimization, also known as SEO, is an online marketing technique that aims to increase a website s search engine visibility. Search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo use a series of algorithms to rank content on the web, and serve up search results to their users based on the calculations of these algorithms. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process online marketers use to ensure your website s content scores highly with these algorithms. Before exploring keyword data for your practice specialty, it will be helpful to understand the logic behind how search engines build their algorithms. The mission of a search engine, like Google, is principally to deliver an answer to the searcher s query. In this vein, a search engine needs to understand the nature of the query, and then match it the most relevant pages on the Internet that answer that query. With this in mind, great medical practice websites have a deep understanding of what patients are asking online, and create website content to answer those queries. A search engine, in turn, will index a medical practice s website, look for specific keywords it can match to the searchers query, and rank the webpage accordingly. This is the simplest explanation of how organic search marketing works. The purpose of this document is to show you the top 100 keywords patients use when searching for information about ophthalmology. It is important to note that this list is by no means exhaustive. There are literally tens of thousands of search queries that we excluded from this list. When reading through these keywords, use them as a guidepost for the type of content you absolutely must include on your website. After creating content for these keywords, your practice can focus on additional search terms that are locale-focused or specific to your practice. How to Interpret the Keyword Data All of the data you will see in the following table is pulled from Google s Keyword Research tool, and is specific to Google alone. Here is an explanation of the three columns you will see in the table below: Keyword This is the exact query used by Google searchers Avg. Monthly Searches This is the average number of monthly searches in Google for the keyword. This is a sum of all searches in the United States. Competition This represents Google s assessment of how difficult it is to rank for the keyword, relative to competitive websites. It is graded on a scale of 0.0 1.0.
