OAKLAND INKS THREE IN EARLY SIGNING PERIOD Nick Daniels, Kahlil Felder and Jalen Hayes have signed a National Letter of Intent to play their collegiate basketball at Oakland. My staff did one heck of a job, said OU coach Greg Kampe. I can t tell you how excited I am about all three kids we signed. All three are lefthanded and top-notch players. They can defend, they re athletic and they can score. What I like most about them is they all can run the floor and can elevate. We hit a home run! Daniels is a 6-foot-1, 160-pound point guard at John Glenn High School. He is 300 points shy of setting his school s all-time scoring record and is a 3-point threat. He is a very aggressive and can score the ball. Felder is a 5-foot-9, 165-pound point guard at Detroit Pershing High School. He averaged 19 points and over 7.0 assists per game last season at Pershing. Felder is very skilled offensively and defensively, is a tough competitor and leader on the floor. Hayes is a 6-foot-7, 200-pound forward from Lansing Sexton High School. He is the latest Sexton product to join the Golden Grizzlies (Jordan Howenstine, Drew Valentine, Assistant Coach Saddi Washington) and is a long, very skilled player. Hayes runs the floor well and is an excellent finisher around the basket. He led Sexton to back-to-back Class B State Championships. oakland basketball notes game 31 vs. fort wayne march 2, 2013 What they are saying about Oakland basketball... Blue Ribbon Yearbook There is a clear-cut favorite in the Summit League, and it isn t Oakland, it s South Dakota State. But the Golden Grizzlies have the talent on hand to win the conference. Kampe is putting a lot on the shoulders of Mondy. If the former Big East player comes through, Oakland should be playing in the conference title game. Even if it doesn t win the Summit, Oakland should again hit the 20-win mark and be a popular choice for the multiple postseason tournaments. Kampe s guys play an entertaining style and aren t afraid to mix it up against the better teams in the country. Oakland plays its usual schedule of nonconference heavyweights, traveling to Michigan State, Pitt, West Virginia, Alabama and Tennessee. On Duke Mondy, by Eric Angervince, NBCSports.com His defensive abilities should allow him to make an immediate impact. Travis Bader rated No. 10 best shooter in the country, by Jeff Goodman, CBSSports.com The Golden Grizz guard made 44 percent as a freshman and followed it up by making 124-of-314 shots (.395 percent) last season -- including 10 3-pointers against South Dakota State last January. Has made 41 percent for his career. Pitt head coach Jamie Dixon after the Panthers beat OU in overtime First off, I wanted to talk about Greg (Kampe) and his team and how well they played, and how well they responded. They caused us to make mistakes and not play our best basketball. I thought they did a great job. They battled and they competed and they were physical. Give them credit. They lost two games on the road to two pretty good teams that I think they felt they should have won. They were ahead in both of them, and they just responded and came out and said we re a better team than that. They took it to us. They were more physical, they got into us, and we just didn t handle it as well as I would ve thought. Michigan State Coach Tom Izzo after the 15th-ranked Spartans beat OU I told my team Travis Bader has taken more shots in this gym than any player I ve got because he started doing it when he was in about fifth grade. As happy as I am that we did a good job, he s the one guy I feel for a little bit because when you think of a walk-on at Oakland, as he did, and we put 75% of our scouting report on him. I think that speaks volumes about how much this kid has made himself a player. That s pretty awesome. I ve great respect for (Greg) Kampe and his staff, he s got a really good staff. So a lot of respect for both parties and yet I think both parties agreed we didn t play as well. Tennessee head coach Cuonzo Martin on Travis Bader He can shoot. He is one of the best shooters in the country. You can t leave that guy open because he makes shots, makes them deep, and he is constantly moving. He is on the floor all the time. It is just tough. I think he got one three in the corner by their bench, outside of that he was getting to the freethrow line and shooting pull-ups in the lane. Bruce Pearl, ESPN Analyst On Oakland Oakland is not quite Butler, but they are Butler like with their mindset when it comes to mid-major programs. On Greg Kampe Outstanding Coach. He was a great coach when Oakland was a Divsion II, he s taken them to Division I, and they have dominated The Summit League over the last 3 or 4 years. On Travis Bader That s what NBA players do (speaking on a step-back 3-pointer Bader made in game at West Virginia). Dave O Brien, ESPN Analyst On Drew Valentine He does a lot of little things to help the Golden Grizzlies win. Alabama Coach Anthony Grant Oakland is a very tough challenge to close out non-conference play. We played them last year, so we are a little familiar with them. They are a different team and have a lot of new guys on this year s team. But the veterans are the guys who stand out. (Travis) Bader is one of the top three-point shooters in the country and comes into the game leading them in scoring. Their center inside (Corey Petros) is a guy who has really blossomed this year. He is second on the team in scoring and leads the team in rebounding. They have a lot of good veteran group of players around them, so we are going to have to do a good job on the defensive end.
