OAKLAND INKS THREE IN EARLY SIGNING PERIOD Nick Daniels, Kahlil Felder and Jalen Hayes have signed a National Letter of Intent to play their collegiate basketball at Oakland. My staff did one heck of a job, said OU coach Greg Kampe. I can t tell you how excited I am about all three kids we signed. All three are lefthanded and top-notch players. They can defend, they re athletic and they can score. What I like most about them is they all can run the floor and can elevate. We hit a home run! Daniels is a 6-foot-1, 160-pound point guard at John Glenn High School. He is 300 points shy of setting his school s all-time scoring record and is a 3-point threat. He is a very aggressive and can score the ball. Felder is a 5-foot-9, 165-pound point guard at Detroit Pershing High School. He averaged 19 points and over 7.0 assists per game last season at Pershing. Felder is very skilled offensively and defensively, is a tough competitor and leader on the floor. Hayes is a 6-foot-7, 200-pound forward from Lansing Sexton High School. He is the latest Sexton product to join the Golden Grizzlies (Jordan Howenstine, Drew Valentine, Assistant Coach Saddi Washington) and is a long, very skilled player. Hayes runs the floor well and is an excellent finisher around the basket. He led Sexton to back-to-back Class B State Championships. After 28 seasons at the helm, Kampe has led the Golden Grizzlies to four consecutive postseason (2 NCAA, 2 CIT) and 20-win seasons (2008-present) for the first time in program history. The Golden Grizzlies won a Summit League record three postseason games and advanced to the CollegeInsider.com Postseason tournament semifinals in 2012. After leading the basketball program to the top of Division II in the 90s, OU became an elite program amongst Division I Mid-Majors in the 21st century, finishing inside the top 10 in 2010 and 11. Blue Ribbon Yearbook There is a clear-cut favorite in the Summit League, and it isn t Oakland, it s South Dakota State. But the Golden Grizzlies have the talent on hand to win the conference. Kampe is putting a lot on the shoulders of Mondy. If the former Big East player comes through, Oakland should be playing in the conference title game. Even if it doesn t win the Summit, Oakland should again hit the 20-win mark and be a popular choice for the multiple postseason tournaments. Kampe s guys play an entertaining style and aren t afraid to mix it up against the better teams in the country. They caused us to make mistakes and not play our best basketball. I thought they did a great job. They battled and they competed and they were physical. Give them credit. They lost two games on the road to two pretty good teams that I think they felt they should have won. They were ahead in both of them, and they just responded and came out and said we re a better team than that. They took it to us. They were more physical, they got into us, and we just didn t handle it as well as I would ve thought.
