A Note from the Director Hello, and thank you for considering us for your recreational needs. Here at the Old Town Recreation Center, it is a new day with a great vision in place for our future. Our mission is strong, our staff is dedicated, and we are poised to make a difference for our community. We have created a sustainable model--and we will be here for many years to come. Our goal is for you to enjoy a safe and productive recreation experience with us! While we offer a variety of quality services for youth and families, we are also mindful of the importance of safety, reasonable time commitments, and productive play in all of our programming efforts. Our time with you is important to us! Here at the Old Town Recreation Center, we take pride in the responsibility of helping children learn about kindness and good choices, and embrace this role with your child or loved one with passion and purpose. McPhee, CEO and Founder Afterschool Care 2016-2017 2017 Afterschool Enrichment Program This FUN, encouraging and interactive program is designed for children (Kindergarten through 8 th grade) to provide safety, enrichment, and healthy exercise to keep your child active! AEP participants are transported by bus from the Old Town Elementary and Leonard Middle School directly to our front door. Van transportation is available for Bradley, Milford, and Orono schools. Pickup times: 2:0 Bradley, 2:0 Milford, :00 Orono. We begin our daily program with a quick check in about their day at school and provide a healthy snack for our campers to fuel up with and then - let the games begin! Late pick-up is available for afterschool programs (with prior notice) at OTES and LMS. We keep our kids busy while they are here! We are always movin and groovin with a variety of physical activities during our time together. We especially love the outdoors! Homework help is also available. We offer four age-groups: grades K-1, 2-, -, and 6-8 Location: Old Town Recreation Center (at the H.E. Sargent Community Center) Times: Mon Fri from 2:1 p.m. :0 p.m. AEP Fees: $1/day or $6/week Half-day Camp is available for early release days. Half-day Fee: $2/day. Full-Day Camp is open for in-service days, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, snow days & vacations. (Day camp is closed 9/, 11/2-2, and 12/26.) Full-day Fee: $0/day or $120/week New! Adult Co-Ed Softball Session I (September & October) New this year is our adult co-ed softball league. Enjoy fun, yet competitive sports play. Games begin Monday, August 29th. Each team plays regular season games on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Fridays, which determine seeding for the tournament. The fall season will conclude with a double-elimination tournament and a championship game on October 8th. Registration is open to the first 6 teams. Session I (September & October) Baseball: Eastern Maine Fall Baseball League This developmental league prepares young players for Little League and helps older players gain confidence. There are two leagues: ages 8-12 and ages 12-1. Dates: Sundays, 8/28-10/2 Times: TBD Ages: 8-12 years Fee: $ Dance: Morita s School of Dance We are excited once again to offer an invigorating program with Morita s School of Dance that will provide your dancer with choices to learn a progression of fundamental steps in the following disciplines: ballet, jazz, hip-hop, and tap dance! Recitals are held in December and June. Dates: Saturdays, 9/10-10/22 9:00-9: a.m. Intro to Tap & Ballet (ages - years) Before 9/: $ 10:00-10: a.m. Intro to Tap & Ballet (gr. K-) After 9/: $ 10:-11:1 a.m. Hippity Hop/Jazz* (gr. 1-2) *must be enrolled in Tap/Ballet* 10:-11:1 a.m. Beginner Hip Hop & Jazz (gr. -8) 12:00-12: p.m. Advanced Beginner/Intermediate Tap & Ballet (gr. -8) Fencing: Downeast School of Fencing Level 1: This introductory class in foil fencing teaches basic skills of fencing: safety, basic footwork, blade work, and essential rules of play for bouting. All fencing equipment will be provided for the course. Level 2: This Level 2 class improves and reinforces skills of foil, epee or saber fencing through low-line and circular parries, phrasing, preparations on the blade, next level footwork, and bouting strategies. Youth are taught the martial art and sport of foil fencing. Level 2 fencers must have taken at least two fencing classes or have evidence of experience. Grades 2-8 Dates: Wed. 9/1-10/19 Time: :00-6:00 p.m. Before 9/7: $ After 9/7: $ Field Hockey Flag Football Ages: 12-1 years Fee: $6 Brush up on your stick skills, offense, defense, and teamwork with our Rec Fall Field Hockey. The sport of field hockey promotes teamwork, encouragement, and overall enjoyment Grades 2- Dates: Saturdays, 9/10-10/22 Time: 9:00-10:00 a.m. Before 9/: $ After 9/: $ Down, Set, Hut, Hut, Hike! Join us on the Gridiron for this exciting, NON-contact football experience! Instruction and weekly games will be played during our time together! Games will be played on the Orono High School field. Grades 2- Dates: Thursdays, 9/8-10/20 Time: :0 7:00 p.m. Before 9/1: $ After 9/1: $ Jr. Coyote Travel Basketball Teams will compete in the Eastern Maine Travel Basketball League. Games take place on Saturday or Sunday, depending on the location. Travel is required for 1/2 of the games played. We are pleased to offer teams based upon gender and age. Players will be required to attend a 1-day evaluation to be placed upon a team. The Tournament for the League will be in March. The fee includes one tournament. Additional tournaments may be an additional expense. Evaluation dates: Tues. Oct.11 - /6 boys 6:00-7:00 p.m., 7/8 boys 7:00-8:00p.m., Wed. Oct.12 - /6 girls 6:00-7:00 p.m., 7/8 girls 7:00-8:00p.m., Thurs. Lego Robotics Safe Sitter Session I (September & October) Lego Discoveries is a hands-on program designed with First League Lego principles to build interest in science and engineering through the use of Legos. This program features explorations through critical thinking, imagination, and real-world challenges. Come join the fun as we explore and build together. Grades 1- Dates: Wed., 9/1-10/19 Time: :0-:0 p.m. Before 9/7: $ After 9/7: $ Intro to Lego Robotics: Intro to Lego Robotics is a robotics program designed to get children excited about science and technology through the use of Lego Robotics. With the use of our new Mindstorm EV kits (and expansion kits), participants will learn valuable life skills-such as programming, leadership, and teamwork-through real-world challenges. Let's learn together and prepare for the RSU # robotics teams! Grades -6 Dates: Mondays, 9/12-10/17 Time: :0-:0 p.m. Before 9/: $ After 9/: $6 Safe Sitter is a program for teenagers to learn life skills, safety skills, and provide child care training to youth. Safe Sitter Essentials: Students learn the basics of safety, child care, basic first aid and rescue, and life & business skills. Materials included: Safe Sitter Handbook, important numbers note pad, bandage dispenser, LED flashlight, and drawstring bag. Grades 6-8 Date: Saturday, 10/1 Time: 9:00 a.m.-2:0 p.m. Before 10/8: $ After 10/8: $6 New! Safe Sitter Advanced: We are now able to offer an advanced, Level 2 Safe Sitter class for teens who have taken the Safe Sitter Essentials course. This advanced class includes online safety, advanced behavior management training, first aid, choking rescue, and CPR. Students will receive an updated Safe Sitter Handbook. Grades 6-9 Date: Saturday, 10/29 Time: 9:00 a.m.-2:0 p.m. Before 10/22: $ After 10/22: $ Soccer: Preschool Kicking Stars Soccer This -week program will provide your little one with an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of soccer while playing games. This Kicking Stars program will help your child become ready for Youth Soccer in the future. Held at Leonard Middle School in Old Town. Ages - Date: Mondays, 9/26-10/17 Time: :00-:0 p.m. Before 9/19: $0 After 9/19: $0 Soccer: Youth Fall Soccer Join us on the soccer field as we partner with our community to offer excellent soccer skills instruction. With us your child will get top-notch coaching, as all of our coaches will go through training. Each level of play is broken up by grade level. There is one practice per week and games will take place on Saturdays at Leonard Middle School in Old Town. Grades K- Dates: Saturdays, 9/10-10/22 Times: 9:00-10:00 a.m. (grades K-1) Before 9/: $ (no games on 9/2) 10:1-11:1 a.m. (grades 2-) After 9/: $ 11:0 a.m.-12:0 p.m. (grades -) Children are introduced to the exciting arena of competitive Nerf play. Various Nerf missions will provide them with the opportunity to learn critical thinking, team building, good sportsmanship and get plenty of exercise. Protective Eyewear, Team Jersey, guns, and ammo will be provided. Session II (November & December) Basketball: In-House Rec League Grades K-1 1 Prep League: This 6-week instructional program is an introduction to basketball. Children will be taught the fundamentals in a fun environment as we explore different aspects of the game. Dates: Saturdays, 12/10-2/ Time: 8:0-9:0 a.m. Before 12/: $ After 12/: $ (no class 12/2 and 12/1) Grades 2-6 6 In-House Basketball League: This 8-week youth basketball program allows the kids to learn and develop their basketball skills. League teams will play games with local Rec communities such as Bangor, Indian Island, and Orono/Veazie. Practices are once a week, and teams play on Saturdays. Dates: Saturdays, 12/10-2/ Time: 9:0-10:0 a.m. (grades 2-) Before 12/: $ After 12/: $6 (no class 12/2 and 12/1) 10:-11: a.m. (grades -6) Basketball: Preschool Shooting Stars Basketball This -week program here at the Rec will provide your little one with an exciting opportunity to learn the fundamentals of basketball while playing games. The Shooting Stars Basketball program will help your child become ready for the Rec League.
