We will also be closing at approximately 2 pm on Tuesday, July 10th to begin set up. Remember to arrive approximately one hour before your assigned judging time to have your book checked. Project books will be available for pick up at the pick up table once they have been checked. You will need your book for your judging! Sign up for a judging time at your assigned booth approximately 20 minutes prior to your judging start time. Judging times are spaced 10 minutes apart so please pay attention to times already taken and sign up for a time 10 minutes after. Please remember the time you signed up for and be ready at that time. Extension Office Staff and Food & Fashion Board Members will be available if you have trouble finding your judging booth or have questions on signing up for judging times. If you aren t sure, just ask. Once you have completed your judging(s), you may leave. CHANGE State Fair Winners will be announced on the miami.osu.edu website no earlier than 12 noon on Tuesday, July 17th! State Fair packets for those members will be available for pick up no earlier than 12 noon on Tuesday, July 17th. Packets must be picked up at the Extension Office by 4 pm, Friday, July 20th. If not picked up by Friday, the alternate will be notified. All Outstanding, Honorable Mention, and State Fair Winners will be announced at the Miami County Fair on Saturday, August 11th at 2 pm during the Project Pride Day Awards Ceremony.

July/August, 2018 Page 2 Attention Food & Nutrition Project Members NEW for 2018: Food and Nutrition project members are NOT required to bring a food item with them to PPD. Members are REQUIRED to bring their completed project book, portfolio, and educational display. Judges will not be tasting any food. OSF Junior Horse Show Information The Ohio Performance Against Standards State Fair qualifying scores must be included on the county s PAS verification form submitted to the Ohio State Fair entry department by 12:00 p.m. on Monday, July 9, 2018. It is the responsibility of each exhibitor to submit their entry and pay their $40 stall fee online at www.ohiostate fair.com by 12:00 p.m. on Monday, July 9, 2018. Both the PAS verification form submitted by the county and the entry form submitted by the exhibitor must be submitted by 12:00 p.m. on Monday, July 9, 2018 for the exhibitor to be able to compete. The 2018 Miami County State Fair Qualifying Show was held Saturday, June 9. Miami County youth who qualify at other county PAS shows must submit their Out-of- County PAS form to the Extension Office by Friday, July 6, unless the show occurs that weekend. In that case, forms must be received by 9:00 a.m., July 9 to insure that they are included on the PAS verification form submitted to the State. Exhibitors will be assigned stalls in advance of their arrival at the Junior Horse Show. Exhibitors wanting to stall together must submit a group stall request form along with copies of their stall fee receipts to Dr. Cole by Monday, July 9th. More information and the request form can be found online at http://horse.osu.edu. For more information regarding the 2018 Ohio State Fair Junior Horse Show, please visit, http://horse.osu.edu and http://ohiostatefair.com/livestock/. Award Forms Due Ten Year and Final Year Award forms were mailed to individuals in mid June. If you did not receive a form and feel you qualify for one of these awards, please contact the Extension Office. These are due by Monday, July 16th. County Award forms were included in the last newsletter. Please consider nominating a young person, 14 years old or older (as of Jan. 1), for one of these honors. County Award forms are due by Friday, July 13th. Remember they do not have to be a blue ribbon winner, but a blue ribbon kid to qualify. Pull Tab Community Service We would like our 4-H families to once again join us in saving pull tabs for our county community service activity. Aluminum pull tabs can be found on various beverages, soup, pet food, and other canned items. Please begin saving your tabs today and turn them in at the Miami County 4-H Barbecue on Saturday, July 14th. The tabs will be donated to Ronald McDonald House Charities. 4-H BBQ Schedule It s that time of year again! Mark your calendars for the 2018 4-H Bar-B-Que. When: Saturday, July 14th Where: Miami County Fairgrounds Who: Anyone! This year s BBQ includes several events to enjoy! 4-7pm: Food being served 12pm: Miami Co. Horse Association Speed Show 6:30pm: Live Auction (must be present to win) 6pm: Kiddie Tractor Pull (5pm sign up) 4pm-until sold out: Miami County Farm Bureau Dairy Bar Milkshakes 8pm: Dance Miami County 4-H Clubs are once again asked to please donate an item(s) to the auction. Looking for ideas? Consider donating, themed gift baskets, sports tickets, gift certificates, hand-crafted items, home and garden supplies, baked goods, etc. Thanks so much for your efforts to make this event a success. Thank you also to the clubs and individuals who have signed up to help with the event! 2018 Miami County Junior and Senior Outstanding Horseman Award Come out and represent your 4-H Club and Miami County in the first Junior and Senior Outstanding Horseman Award competition. This competition is open to 4-H members that are 8-18 years of age. You can show off your creativity and style with a Freestyle routine to your favorite song and have a chance at winning an embroidered jacket to wear and show off your new title! Entry deadline is July 13th, 2018. Please ask your 4-H horse advisor or call Kelly Berry at 937-416-3980 for an application and list of all the rules and guidelines.

July/August, 2018 Page 3 Miami County Fair News Fair Pass Information For 4-H advisors and 4-H club members 9 years and older (Fair rules state 8 year olds are admitted free, therefore your 8 year old 4-Hers will not be receiving a fair pass.), fair passes will be handed out beginning August 1st cost for fair passes will be $20.00 for advisors; $2.00 for 4-H members (picked up by one Advisor or designated adult representative per Club). The 4-H Barbecue is the primary fund raiser of the Miami County 4-H Program. Proceeds from the annual Miami County 4-H Barbecue combined with 4-H member assessment fees fund: the purchase of project ribbons (i.e. outstanding project book, outstanding rosettes, honorable mention, achievement ribbons), pins and certificates, 10 year and final year awards, scholarships, part of the Volunteer Banquet awards and decorations, tenured awards, older youth trips (i.e. Sea Camp), volunteer education (i.e. State 4-H Conference attendees), 4-H promotional activities, Cloverbud and Jr Camp camper scholarships, Cloverbud activities, School program materials, Project Pride Day drapes, judges meals, and miscellaneous expenses, trophies not covered by Junior Fair, Food and Fashion Board activities, 4-H newsletter postage, postage, insurance, bond insurance, miscellaneous expenses (i.e. checks). All clubs are required to participate in this annual event. Reduced-rate fair passes will be distributed only to those clubs that participate in (based upon BBQ tickets sold) the 4-H Barbeque on July 14th and for all that are in good standing with their club/organization. The Organizational Advisor (or a designee of the Organizational Advisor) is responsible for picking up the passes for the whole club at the Fairgrounds and distributing them to club members and advisors. Replacements must be purchased - so be careful with those passes! Note: Any volunteers or members added after club enrollment deadline (the last Friday in March) are not eligible for discounted passes. Cloverbuds Cloverbud Fun Times at the Fair Children in grades K-2 can enjoy books and crafts during Cloverbud Fun Time! All activities will be held in the Duke Lundgard Building. Friday, August 10, 2:30 pm Tuesday, August 14, 2:30 pm Thursday, August 16, 2:30 pm Cloverbud Show-N-Tell and Graduation Wednesday, August 15 Duke Lundgard Building The Cloverbud 4-H Show-N-Tell program is a non-competitive demonstration activity. Members share or show and tell what they learned during the year in a 2-3 minute talk with an interviewer. Cloverbuds may use a scrapbook, photo album, poster, or activity from the Cloverbud curriculum as part of their demonstration. Youth may participate as individuals or in teams. Cloverbud Show-N-Tell teams may consist of 2-4 members. (Team members must talk about the same topic.) Participants must complete the *preregistration form in this newsletter and return it by Wednesday, August 1st. Topics are to be related only to information learned during Cloverbud Activities. Cloverbud Graduation will take place immediately following Cloverbud Show-N-Tell. Cloverbud Fair Booth Set Up August 8, 2018 Exhibits for the Cloverbud Booth may be dropped off Wednesday, August 8th from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm in the Duke Lundgard Building. Members may display projects or posters of 4-H Cloverbud activities (camp, meetings, community service, etc.). All items must be accompanied by 5 x 7 cards listing members names and clubs. Due to limited space, Cloverbud groups may submit a full size club poster, individual projects, or half size individual posters.

Page 4 Fair Booth Information For those clubs wanting to have a booth in the Duke Lundgard Building during fair, registration forms are available in the Project Pride Day Booklet and are due no later than July 11th. For clubs who will be exhibiting their non-livestock projects in the Miscellaneous Booth - you must also complete the fair booth request form to let Demetria know how many projects you will be bringing. All projects, including miscellaneous booth, must be in place by 5 pm on Thursday, August 9th. (Building will be closed for judging at 5 pm.) Note: Each project displayed must be legibly marked with the member s name to receive your Jr. Fair Voucher. Remember, this year s theme is Celebrating the Growth of 4-H For more information on booth size and what can be used to hang your decorations, please refer to the Project Pride Day/Fair Booklet. If you have any questions, please contact the Extension Office at 440-3945. Fair Vouchers Please remember to pick up fair vouchers on Saturday, August 11th in the Duke Lundgard Building at the table near the stage. Vouchers must be picked up by the Organizational Advisor, or an individual designated by the Organizational Advisor for your club. Vouchers will be available for pickup from 9am-4pm on Saturday, except during the Awards Ceremony. $1.00 vouchers are given to each completed project on display by Thursday, August 9th at 5:00 pm. Projects must be labeled clearly to receive a voucher. Outstanding Project Book Reminder Those interested in submitting their project book for an Outstanding Project Book award can do so by turning their book in AFTER their judging time on Project Pride Day for nonlivestock projects. Animal books can be submitted by dropping them off on Project Pride Day on July 11th, or to the Extension Office by July 12th, no later than 4pm. Only one Outstanding Project Book entry per project category, please. See page 7 of the Project Pride Day booklet for more details on judging criteria. 2018 AVIAN BOWL RESOURCES The 2018 Ohio State Fair 4-H Avian Bowl Contest will be held Saturday, August 4, at the Buckeye Sports Center on the Ohio State Fairgrounds. The deadline for teams to enter is July 6 (postmark). Entry fees are $15.00 per team. Each team must submit 30 questions which must come from sections of the 2016 National 4-H Avian Bowl Manual listed on the Avian Bowl Study Materials for 2018. Saturday, July 28 at 6:00 p.m. Cloverbud Activity Seed Art Thursday, July 26 at 5:00 p.m. 4-H Yoga Wednesday, July 25 at 5:00 p.m. Performance by the Licking County 4-H Band Sunday, July 29 at 6:30 p.m. 4-H s Got Talent Show Contract Reminder Many facilities now require signed contractual agreements, fees for use and proof of General Liability Insurance. If you are using a facility for 4-H club meetings, events or programs that have these requirements, please take a copy of the facility contract/agreement to the Extension Office. You may not enter into contractual agreements (sign contracts) with any entity on behalf of the Ohio State University or the Ohio 4-H Program. The Extension Office will assist you in securing appropriate approval of contracts and obtaining general liability insurance, when needed. Got talent? Check out this new event at the Ohio State Fair Youth Center. The event will be held Saturday, July 28 at 6:00 p.m. and is open to 4-H members only. Members have a chance to win a clock trophy! Spots are limited and applications will be accepted on a first-come, firstserved basis, so register soon! Please go to ohio4h.org/ ohiostatefair for the application to apply. Cloverbud Activity Looking for something for your Cloverbud to do at the Ohio State Fair? Check out our seed art activity held in the Youth Center on Thursday, July 26 at 5:00 p.m. No need to pre-register, just join us for some fun! 4-H Yoga Interested in learning more about yoga and how to include it in your 4-H club activities? Yoga has a multiple mental and physical health benefits and is something people of all ages can do. Please join the Ohio 4-H Health Heroes in learning some fun and relaxing yoga poses at the Ohio State Fair Youth Center. This event will be held on Wednesday, July 25 at 5:00 pm. Licking County 4-H Band Performance Looking for a cool place to enjoy a show at the Ohio State Fair? Join us in the Youth Center on Sunday, July 29 at 6:30 p.m. for a performance by the Licking County 4-H Band. This band began in 1948 and currently has 4-H members ages 11-19 who attend school or live in Licking County. You are in for a real treat. Join us!

July/August, 2018 Attention Please Page 7 New Contest A Senior Grilling Contest will be held during the Miami County Fair at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 12. This new contest replaces the Senior Cook-Off. Youth must be ages 14 and older (as of January 1) and do not have to currently be enrolled in a nutrition project or be a 4-H member to participate. Hello readers! Local Health Hero Update My journey as a Health Hero is picking up rapidly! I have been participating in many new activities including a new program called HealthU! This is going to be a camp sponsored by myself alongside all of the other Health Heroes. This camp will be October 27, 2018 with more information to come. Also, we are looking for new members to join Health Heroes next year. These applications are now open, and MUST be turned in by September 15, 2018. You must be in grades 7-12 at the start of the 2018-2019 school year. This is a great opportunity to meet new people who are just as passionate about 4-H as you are! Looking to see some familiar faces next year! - Miranda Tatom, Your local Health Hero Memory Bench: Bottle Caps & Lid Collection The Miami County Extension office along with Miami County 4-H Clubs are collecting bottle caps and lids to be recycled into a memorial bench for two very special volunteers, Bill and Mary Ann Cusac. Our goal is to have the bench by the start of the Miami County Fair on August 10, 2018. However, we will continue to collect caps and lids until we have enough to make a bench. How do I get involved? Collect acceptable caps and lids. Drop the CLEAN lids off in the special receptacle at the Extension office. What caps and lids are acceptable? July/August, 2018 Page 8 Ohio 4-H Teen Leadership Council Applications and more information to be an Ohio 4-H Teen Leadership Council (TLC) member are now available online at: go.osu.edu/tlc. Please note applications (and other materials, including letters of recommendation) are due (not postmarked; received!) by Friday, August 10, 2018. Here are some highlights about the responsibilities of the council: Age: Individuals must be 14-18 as of January 1 the year of application to apply for council member, committee member, committee chair, and officer. Number of Meetings/Events: See the program structure outline on the application for specific numbers of meetings and events. Members are required to attend at least 75% of meetings and events. Working Events: Members are required to work a number of statewide events at the Ohio State Fair, and elsewhere throughout the state (Farm Science Review, Legislative Luncheon, etc.). Each level of membership differs in the number of events that are required. See the program structure for more information. Location of meetings: Meetings are typically held at the Ohio 4-H Center in Columbus, Ohio, but there are occasionally instances when they are held elsewhere due to events on Ohio State s Campus. In these instances, meetings may be held at locations close to campus. Refer to the application for the locations for the 2018-2019 year. Members will be notified prior to the location change. Additional Opportunities: Depending on the level of involvement, council members have the option to apply for additional opportunities including the National 4-H Conference, Ohio 4-H Foundation Board, and other opportunities that may arise. OSF Skillathons 4-H and FFA youth can show what they know about 9 different animal species through 10 skillathon events during the Ohio State Fair. Skillathons are free, registration is the day of the event (an adult must accompany the youth), youth can come anytime between the hours listed, and youth do not have to be a state fair exhibitor or be enrolled in an animal project in order to complete. Youth vying for the Outstanding Market Exhibitor (OME) award for goat, sheep, poultry, swine, and beef must participate in the Skillathon, showmanship, and live animal show in order to qualify. Rules, study resources (including the station topics for each species), and other information are available at: go.osu.edu/osfskillathons Fundraising Reminder Clubs are asked to please submit the Miami County 4-H Fundraising Review Form to the Extension Office 30 days prior to your club fundraising event. Raffles and quarter auctions are not acceptable fund raisers for the 4-H program because they are considered games of chance. Please contact the Extension Office if you have any questions. Contact Bob Seale at redroosterbob@hotmail.com regarding reasonably priced Blue Laced Red Wyandotte (unsexed) chickens that are about 6 weeks old. You must agree to show the chickens as a 4-H project in 2019. Lego Car Derby The Miami County 4-H Program is collaborating with Cub Scouts to offer a Lego Car Derby for Kids Day (August 13) at the Miami County Fair. The derby will be held in the Duke Lundgard Building. The Cub Scouts will supply the derby equipment and the 4-H program will supply Legos and car wheels for use during the event. Youth can build a car and race it. The pieces will then be returned to the pile for the next child to create their vehicle. However, additional Lego parts are needed to build the cars. If you have Legos that you would like to donate, please bring them to the Extension office. Donations will be accepted until July 31.
