Presidential Ponderings Hi All, Well, the asp/cut Price Truck Rentals Adelaide Hills Tarmac Rally is over for another year and Michael Clements and his team put together, yet again, a top class event. The podium was dominated by the Superloc Racing Team with Kevin Weeks/ John Allen winning in their AWESOME Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera R, ahead of Andrew Burnard/ Brian Virgo in their Evo 8 Lancer and Roger Patterson/ Paul Whatnell bring their Classic Porsche 911RS home in 3 rd. Some of our club members didn t fare as well, with the Corolla s of Ross and Nadia Kingham and Guy Tyler/ Brendan Warner both getting a bit close to the trees and Ian and Raymond s Porsche having a heavy impact with the Armco. All escaped without serious injury. Unfortunately the WRX of James Rodda/ Marcus Piristi failed to complete the final transport back to Pennys Hill with engine failure. This was made even more disappointing for the team when they found out it turned a comfortable SARC win into a DNF. In the last couple of months we have had the 1 st two JDP days of the year and also the 1 st two Club Khanacross. The 1 st JDP was unfortunately a bit lower on participants than we expected but the 2 nd round had a slightly larger turnout. \ The 1st Khanacross was well attended and Graham VanDerHoek proved that being Clerk of Course doesn t hamper you as a competitor by taking out the win in his trusty VW Beetle ahead of James Rodda s WRX (Hitting bollards costs time, doesn t it James!). In the 2 nd round Michael Clements was up to the challenge and proved he can put on a fantastic performance in whatever car he gets in, no surprise to most of us who know him. We also had the 2 nd asp Mount Alma Mile Hill Climb, a great event with a near maximum field. Despite a few damp moments in Practice, all competition runs were in the dry and most drivers made it through without damage. Congratulations to Tristan Catford on an outstanding time to win the event in his Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 9, ahead of John Beasley in his Evo 4 and Keir Wilson in his Nissan R35 GTR. An amazing effort by all three had the best 3 times of the weekend set in the podium shootout. Talk about handling the Pressure! Sunday June the 13 th is our round of the SA Autocross Championship at Lanac Park and entries close soon. It is a Day/Night event with competition beginning at 11 am and concluding about 10 pm (Public Holiday Monday). If you are not able to compete I would love to see you out to help with the flags, to learn the timing system or any of the other jobs that we need for the event to run. Remember many hands make light work! We have also purchased a new (to us) John Deere 2250 Tractor to enable us to better maintain Lanac Park as well as be Safer and more comfortable for those operating it. Thanks again to Michael Clements for finding it and organizing its delivery. I m sure Neville and Kevin will be exceedingly grateful. Hope to see you all soon! Jim McGough President

Three of the most intensive days of motorsport I have been involved in for a number of years. Try 1994 but that is for an article in a future magazine. This about now! Friday 21 st May Prologue at Mallala Motorsport Park as well as Special Stages 1 &2 For me the highlight of the weekend was I actually saw cars competing on full noise. Car 1 what a noise, the howl of the Lamborghini on the back straight was absolutely astounding, then the flames!! Wow. Almost all competitors, service crew and spectators were in awe of the leading contender for outright honours. This was confirmed with a significant lead after just 2 stages around Mallala. However the drive of the day would go to a JDP graduate by the name of Guy Tyler who had every-one captivated by his commitment into turn. Was it an effort to preserve tyre wear as on each pass there was significant daylight between tyre and track surface. It had Kevin Weeks applauding Guy s commitment. Unfortunately for another JDP graduate, a quick SS 1 time by not completing the prescribed course resulted in the listed penalty being applied. This was very detrimental to Mitchell Hall s rally result.

Service Park from Friday night until Sunday afternoon but not quite all the time, there was some sleep time allowed but they did have to move from Penny s Hill Winery to Victor Harbor for the remote service. The service Park officials are to be applauded from Friday night to Sunday evening they were there to ensure that all the timing requirements of rallying were adhered to. Yes they were volunteers who do not get to see the cars competing, from the organisers thank you very much. Competition Saturday 22 nd May Adelaide Hills, southern area Apart from Hindmarsh Tiers, they were either new or new format stages. I recall discussion at many Classic Adelaide meetings of competing over Myponga Dam wall. Michael Clements managed to devise a concept that complied with SA Water requirements and at the same time provide an excellent spectator viewing point and a new challenge for competitors. Saturday s competition was again not good for JDP graduates. After setting a string of fastest stage times, James Rodda found the down side of rallying with a seized engine about 10km from Penny s Hill Winery. It was also the SDCC crew of Ross and Nadia Kingham who activated the first and only FIV call for Saturday when they had a little incident on Hindmarsh Tiers, it was great news to hear that they were uninjured. If you have not yet seen the incident it is available on youtube! Competition Sunday 23 rd May Adelaide Hills, southern area A mixture of old, altered and new provided an interesting day of competition but the JDP nemesis struck again with Guy Tyler also having an off on Gemmels a new stage for this year. Once again Blewitt Springs required FIV intervention but yet again no personal injuries sustained. Clarendon (reversed for this year s tarmac event due to a resident s request) resulted in a number of FIV calls but again no personal injuries sustained. So there is my view of the 2010 asp/cut Price Adelaide Hills Tarmac Rally and the culmination of many, many hours of work for a number of people. Will there be an Adelaide Hills Tarmac Rally for 2011? Well let s just wait and see. From the enthusiasm shown and accolades freely given by competitors at the Awards dinner it is an emphatic YES. There were some things that did work, there were some things that didn t. As organisers we learnt many lessons to apply for an event in the future As I said at one of the many resident s meetings held prior to the event, As long as you make new mistakes you can be forgiven. If you continue to carry on with the same mistakes, you won t. The venue was conducted at Collingrove Hill climb Track with individual rides available at $5 per run; all proceeds from the day were going straight to the Canteen for kid s charity of SA. As this was a CAMS approved event, helmets were required but provided. The only other CAMS requirement was that all passengers were required to wear cotton ankle to neck to wrist clothing plus covered in footwear, leather preferred. Thanks must go to Reg Marratt for organising this event. All the more as Reg has been a passionate supporter of Canteen for Kids for a number of years. From the success of this year s event I am sure that the numbers (and the money raised for Canteen for Kids) will increase significantly over the coming years. Just another example of the generosity of motorsport people to charitable causes. So keep an eye on next year s calendar, you will not want to miss out again. Due to time constraints all people who have elected to receive the SDCC magazine via email were sent out notification as soon as possible. To all others on hardcopy post, my apologies, time was against a full magazine. Trevor Palmer

Editor s Report Here it is a bi-monthly issue of Southern Comfort for May and June (that is 2 monthly not 2 per month). Apologies for the lateness of the May issue but there were new reasons for this. At the closing date for articles I had two articles to be included. Thank you to the President, Jim McGough and Anne Marie Pijanka who made the effort to put toner on a page. So to make my job easier how about giving your point of view/opinion about your motorsport activities. Your sponsors will welcome the added publicity and you may be able to expand it for future events. Probably I should have also included an article on the recent purchase of the replacement tractor for Lanac Park but with the win in tarmac rally by Kevin Weeks/ John Allen in their AWESOME Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera R you cannot have too many tractor references in a single issue of Southern Comfort. I could have filled the remainder of the magazine with my slant on Southern Districts Car Club events past and present but unfortunately my time was required elsewhere. With this elsewhere being the Safety Plan for the 2010 asp / Cut Price Adelaide Hills Tarmac Rally I spent it where the deadline was more critical. With the status of the event raised to National Championship and the ever increasing requirements from at least one of the councils, the content required in the safety plan was far greater than previous years. It was very pleasing to note that even though the activation of the safety plan was initiated, there were no bodily injuries sustained. You do not know how pleasing it was each time bar one to hear the final report from the responding FIV s to be Code 4 = no injuries, no further action required. Trevor Palmer STOP PRESS STOP PRESS Tarmac Rally tentative date selected The 2011 event is being planned for 27-29th May Obviously this date will need CAMS ratification If you are interested to assist, please contact Michael Clements and offer your services

Lanac Park Khanacross 18th April 2010. Yes this event was a while ago but as it was an unsolicited event report I consider that it does deserve to be included in this the May-June issue. Well the long awaited day arrived, the debut of the Toyota RA40, the fixed "Deadly" Datsun and the first official event for our new team member Amber Hamdorf. What can I say, but we had a brilliant day - the Datsun ran well after having a new electronic ignition fitted and the SU's finally sorted out (did not have to change one spark plug - Yahoo). So Deadly lived up to her name, still one of the quietest cars out there, and Dylan has noted a better performance and response, although with the changes to the SU's it was again getting use to a touchy throttle and a rear end which if given its way would spend most of its time trying to whip around to the front. The aim of the day for the Toyota RA40 was to give it its first serious shake down, she handled better than I expected, again we have a car with a rear end that wants to lead (maybe if I drive backwards it would be happy). No really the Toyo did far better in the handling than was expected. I thought I may find my spine being shoved through the base of my skull, with the car sitting so low. But we did put on new shockers all round, she did not bottom out once, despite being a bit long in the nose. We also placed an additional foam insert into the driver s seat (no it is not my booster seat so that I can see over the dash). The Toyo shakedown went well with us only losing a front hub cap on the last event. We have some minor adjustments still to go on the newly installed Holley carby, but overall I was rather impressed with its handling, it is so much lighter to steer than "Deadly". The Toyota RA40 also has a second driver, Amber Hamdorf; who was in the SDCC JDP program last year.

Amber did well in her first event, and with the transition from driving an automatic in the JDP program to driving the manual Toyota. We took Amber out once we had purchased the Toyo and taught her the basics of driving a manual on the road, her parents had bought her a manual car to drive after coming off her "L's". Amber was a quick student and adapted quickly to the manual. Matt accompanied Amber on the first run, and gave some rather valid tips, Amber also had to adjust to the light backend on the Toyo and the fact she had not driven it since we had done some major work. Fitting new front, rear shockers, changed to a double barrel Holley, new steering tie rod ends and ball joints, new clutch slave cylinder and new road tyres. For Amber each run was an improvement from the last, and by the third run, she emerged from the car with a grin bigger than a Cheshire cat. I would say she started to enjoy the day. The Toyo is slower than "Deadly" Datsun, and only slightly louder, but she is a hoot to drive. The event was brilliant, with a major turn out and the entry officials swamped, I believe there were 38 drivers. There were new cars out and some of the old favourites, the green 510 Datsun, with the blue 510 being temporarily replaced by an interesting orange 510. Graham Van Der Hoek's beetle sounded great and of course he was rather happy with the end result of a new clutch, and the first win for the season. There was a moment of concern, not for a car but the timing equipment with the green Gemini taking a 90 degree turn at the finishing gate to collect a couple of cones and the timing sensor, the sensor and the Gemini went back into service. An outstanding job done by the officials, yet again, with Matt and Neville getting through the large car turn out. A great day had by all - Lanac - just love it...
