THE X-FACTOR Haines The advantages of racing an X boat are unbeatable: well supported racing throughout the season in six separate locations along the South Coast the annual highlights of Cowes Classics Week and Cowes Week Regatta suitable for crew of all strengths and sizes very affordable to buy the joy of owning a classic yacht the privilege of being part of an X boat s known history the good friendships to be made Club Racing X One Design racing takes place throughout the season in six locations around the Solent. At each of the six locations or Divisions, a full programme of racing is organised by the Clubs involved, with anything from 60 to over 100 races races per season. Of just over 200 X boats ever built, after allowing for those lost to fire, storm and neglect and even one to enemy action, 70% of the fleet is still racing and registered as belonging to members of the six Divisions. The quality of Club racing is the key to the success of the X Class. It has attracted many experienced helms and crew and the standard of sailing at the front of the fleets is undoubtedly high. Whenever you sail you can be sure of good competition. Boats are equal, turnouts are good and races are keenly contested at all levels throughout the fleet. 1

XOD Class Association Cowes: Needless to say it is a very sociable week with good friendships being forged across the fleet Cowes Classics Week Since its inception in 2008, the XOD fleet has enjoyed taking part in Cowes Classics Week in July. From just 13 X boats in the first year, interest grew fast and the XOD fleet has since become the largest fleet in the regatta. Four days of excellent racing from committee boat starts in a large corinthian fleet makes the regatta a compelling fixture in the calendar. During tea after racing and the evening social events, there are many friends to be made among the other classic classes in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Cowes Week Regatta And then there is Cowes Week, the highlight of the XOD Calendar. Around half the entire fleet, in excess of 50 boats from all the Divisions, take part each year. The X Class has been the largest fleet at Cowes Week for many years and holds a special place in the event. The racing is challenging. The size of the fleet, the range of conditions and, not least, the quality of the competition, make it so. The Captain s Cup, the overall trophy for the week, is generally acknowledged within sailing circles, to be one of the most difficult to win. 2

3 The X One Design The X is a one design keel boat class so that all racing is boat for boat against other X boats of similar speed, which is so much more enjoyable than handicap racing. Designed in 1909 by Alfred Westmacott, the first race of the Class was held in 1911 and the centenary of the first race was enthusiastically celebrated in 2011. The X is a classic yacht. It is the only wooden keelboat in the Solent area that has retained a wooden mast and boom. Yet what is remarkable is the number of boats that are actively engaged in racing today. What is also remarkable is that for a wooden boat that has been built for over 100 years, the dimensions of hulls have been kept as consistent as they have. There is little difference in the performance of X boats, whatever their age. Changes over the years Sail plans and controls have been developed over the years, under the eye of the Class Association, making the X a sensitive, well balanced and very pleasing boat to sail. At 21ft, the X is one of the smaller keel boats to sail in the Solent, but it was specifically designed to cope with the short steep Solent chop. It is a good sea boat and can be raced safely when other classes choose to cancel. In the early 1990 s, the Class decided to allow owners to coat the outside of hulls with epoxy, a decision which has made hulls stiffer, thus reducing maintenance and helping to preserve them. The X requires careful tuning to achieve optimum performance and this, together with its relatively low hull speed in tidal waters makes it a challenging boat to sail well. No electronic navigational aids

XOD Class Association are permitted, which increases the dependency on the skills of the crew. But that s the way X sailors like it. A real challenge to seamanship skills. Crew Friendly An X can be crewed competitively by two people (helm plus one), although a third will be an advantage in stronger winds. It doesn t capsize like a dinghy. The spinnaker can be hoisted without leaving the cockpit. Staying at the front of the fleet is not a function of the strength of the crew or their weight. It is suitable therefore for husbands, wives, partners, boyfriends, girlfriends and just good mates young and old, who can all compete on equal terms. Youngsters can race in the family boat and then enjoy picnic trips in between times in safety and comfort. It does not require travel to open meetings or spending nights at sea to be able to enjoy first class racing. Affordability An X is very affordable to buy and the prices range from boats needing some amount of refurbishment to boats in immaculate ready-to-sail condition. Current prices can be found on the XOD website. Maintenance costs will vary, depending upon location and whether the work is done by the owner or by a boatyard. Boats that have been epoxied, and many have, will require less annual maintenance. No keel boat is cheap to run, but the X is a lot less expensive than many. And many boat owners have entered into partnerships, multiple ownership and maintenance sharing to enable costs to be divided between them. 4

Where X Boats are raced Cowes, Hamble, Itchenor, Lymington, Parkstone and Yarmouth are six of the most attractive and well established sailing locations on the South Coast. The Clubs that host the Class in each of these locations are well known and each has its own character and personality. Common to all is a well organised race programme, a good bar and eating facilities and comfortable changing rooms. Above all anyone who wishes to crew or helm an X will receive a very warm welcome and all the help they need. There are many opportunities to make friends and to socialise with other X sailors all the year round, unlike some classes, who only seem to meet on the water. XOD Class Association Centenary Celebrations 2011 The Class celebrated its Centenary in 2011, one hundred years after the first race held in June 1911. In Cowes Week 2011, 145 boats came to the start line and raced as one fleet, which was an all time record for the regatta. And there were many other events held that year to mark the Centenary. What to do next If you would like to learn more about sailing an X, decide which of the locations are most suitable for you. Contact one or more of the Class representatives listed on the XOD website. They will be very pleased to advise you about crewing opportunities, about part-ownership or about boats for sale, dependent upon your interest. They can also advise about the racing programme and availability of moorings and guide you through the process of Club membership. They will be delighted to arrange for you to have a sail. Or you can contact our Class Secretary who can give you an overall view about the merits of each location. 5

Paul Wyeth One design classes have come and one design classes have gone Utilising all kinds of modern designs and materials, they have sometimes been successful for a while, but none has matched the longevity of the X Class, which has thrived through it all. We put it down to an unbeatable combination of benefits: the high quality of racing that challenges all the skills. a boat that is crew friendly and affordable a Class based in six of the best sailing locations and the X-factor for X-tremely good racing! 6
