UTE BRAINTRUST

two season's there he chalked up 17 wins against just three losses. As a four-year college coach, Howard has a mark of 40-13-0 for a winning percentage of.755. Howard began his football career in Long Beach. He played football and baseball in high school and went on to star in both sports at the University of Redlands where he obtained his bachelor's degree in 1957. He earned a master's degree from San Jose State in 1965. He began his coaching career at Lincoln High School in San Jose in 1959 as head coach and in seven years his teams won 45, lost 15, and tied three. In 1966 he moved to Gavilan Junior College in Gilroy, California which had compiled a 2-24-1 record in its three year history. Howard posted a 37-18-0 mark during his six year stint at Gavilan. In 1972 Howard began his four-year college coaching career when he moved to Cal.-Riverside. Howard has had 10 straight winning seasons and only two losing seasons in 18 years as a head coach. 46- Wayne Howard Head Coach Wayne Howard and winning go hand in hand. The native Californian has spent 18 years in the coaching profession (all of them as a head coach) and has rebuilt the football program at three schools. Unlike most coaches Howard has never been an assistant coach, so the Howard football philosophy is strictly his own. The system has worked to perfection as Howard's 18 year wonloss record of 122-46-3 proves. The new Ute coach, who took over the reigns during the first week of December, describes himself as "defensive oriented." Howard believes that the three key ingredients for a winning team are a strong defense, combined with a good kicking game and a consistent and mistake free offense. "We will do a lot of different things on offense," he says, "but we don't want to let our offense get our defense in trouble." Howard moves to Utah from Cal.-State Long Beach (Long Beach State) where he posted an outstanding three-year record of 23-10-0. The year before Howard took over the 49er fortunes the school had chalked up its worst grid season in history. Howard turned the program the first year by going 6-5 in 1974. The next year he tied the Long Beach record for most wins in a season as the 49ers compiled a 9-2 mark. Last season his team was 8-2 on the year. Howard's first four-year college coaching job was at the University of California at Riverside where he went in 1972. In He and his wife, June, have a daughter, Kristen.

RON McBRIDE Offensive Coordinator Offensive Line Offensive coordinator Ron McBride has been the offensive line coach for Wayne Howard the last eight years. He served under Howard at Long Beach State (1974-76), Cal-Riverside (1972-73), and Gavilan Junior College (1969-71). He took over as Howard's offensive coordinator last season at Long Beach. An All-City football and baseball player at South Gate High in California, McBride was a three-year starter at offensive guard and linebacker for San Jose State from 1961-63. The 37 year old McBride also coached at Piedmont High School in San )ose from 1969-71. McBride's offensive lines have always been ranked high and he is rated as one of the top offensive line coaches around. He and his wife, Vicky, have three children, Mike, Jill, and Kelly. TOM GADD Defensive Coordinator Defensive Ends Tom Gadd, Utah's defensive coordinator and defensive end coach, has spent the last five seasons with Wayne Howard, the last three as defensive coordinator. Gadd is a 1969 graduate of the University of California at Riverside and was named Most Inspirational player on the 1968 Highlander squad. After his graduation Tom coached the Riverside freshmen to a combined record of 8-3-1 in 1970 and '71 before moving on to coach the varsity linebackers in 1972 and 1973. During his prep days Gadd was a linebacker on the Kearny High San Diego CIF champions of 1963 and '64 before going to San Diego City College where he played on teams that won 21 out of 22 games. The 30-year old Gadd is married and his wife's name is Carol. 47-

John began his football career at Fullerton High and went on to earn Honorable Mention All-America honors at Fullerton Junior College before transfering to Utah. His coaching experience began at Antilles High in Puerto Rico following his graduation from Utah. He then returned to his alma mater during the 1968-69 seasons before moving to Fullerton Junior College from 1970-1973. He joined the Howard staff at Long Beach after the 1973 season. In 1973 Cheek moved to Oregon State University where he served in the same positions for two years before getting out of football and going into private business. The lure of the coaching profession called him back, however, when he joined the Ute staff this spring. Cheek and his wife, Merry, have four sons, Don, Toney, Steve, and Todd, and one daughter Temi.
