Breezes AND Blows Ocean Springs Yacht Club February 2018 100 Front Beach Drive Ocean Springs, MS 39564 From the Commodores & the OSYC Board From the Rear Commodore, Neal Olive Greetings, Members! Wow! The first month of 2018 is already gone. What a great month it was. The Commodore s Ball was a blast and all the members who attended had a great time. The Elks Mardi Gras parade was just as much fun as always. Even the threat of rain didn't keep anyone away. Springtime is close and with that comes pool time and sailing. Check out the calendar in Fleet Captain Joe s section for regattas on our schedule. Another General Membership Meeting has been scheduled for February 19, 2018 at 7pm. Please make plans to attend. An agenda for the meeting will follow shortly. We hope to see all of you there. As always, thanks so much to all of our members for their support. If anyone has any ideas for improvement or other fun things to do around the club, please speak to a board member and to our Club Manager, Chris Walton. We ll all work together to see if your idea(s) can become a part of the activities at the OSYC. The 2018 Board of Governors is looking forward to a fantastic year with lots of events and fun. We re hoping that you ll be a part of it all as a participant and volunteer! Shannon Smith, Commodore Hello, OSYC Members! It s a new year - time to spruce things up some around our OSYC. Towards that, Helen Effinger and the Ocean Springs Garden Club have worked hard getting a layout and plants [they are buying the plants] to re-do the flower beds at the flag pole and front planter bed area. It is a great plan... donated to the OSYC by a landscape architect whom we hope is a future OSYC member along with her husband Donald. Thank you, Dianne del Cid! The replanting effort from purchasing of plants to their actual installation - is being coordinated towards being done on Saturday, Feb 17 th, 2018, and WE NEED YOUR HELP THAT SATURDAY MORNING. Come on over to the Club, bring a shovel if you have it, and get some fresh air while helping to make the entrance area to your Club more attractive than ever! In other news, we are getting the OSYC s HOUSE COMMITTEE re-established and GOING. I AM ALSO ASKING FOR PEOPLE TO BE ON IT a few of our members have told me they would. If you re interested, then we need you to volunteer, too! Thank You Neal Neal Olive 2018 Rear Commodore 1 of 7
From the Fleet Captain, Joe Pocreva FleetCaptain@OSYC.com Greetings from your Fleet Captain! We have a packed year full of sailing, racing, teaching, and fun! Let s get started. The beach is open for mast up boat storage. There are some big changes, though. We are no longer allowing empty trailer storage at the Club. This should provide a lot of extra parking for club events as well as making parking for our regattas a lot easier. This will also clean up the look of the beach will be appreciated by all. If you would like to register your catamaran on the beach, follow this link and register: http://www.regattanetwork.com/event/16036 Our first regatta of the season will be from 5-8 April 2018. The Hobie Midwinters and the Hobie 17 Nationals will be coming back to celebrate some early sailing and also the opening of our sailing season. It is an honor to be the host again, but I need lots of help to make this go as smooth as always. We need chase boats, race officials, cooks, cleaners, radio operators, ice fetchers in short, I need YOU! Please come to our February Sailing Committee meeting and find out how you can get involved! Now for some really fun news... 28 April 2018 is the Pro- Am 1699 regatta. The only way to race in this one is to bring a crew person along that has NEVER raced before. That s right; this is your chance to get out on the course and race! If you have always wanted to go sailing, this is your first official chance in 2018. Let me know if you are interested in crewing for this event, and I ll help get you paired up with one of our seasoned skippers and you can join in the fun. I ll keep you updated on the upcoming events as they get closer. Joe Pocreva, Fleet Captain Fleetcaptain@osyc.com Social Committee News The OSYC s 2018 Social Committee met for the first time on Tuesday evening, January 30, at 6:00 PM. During the meeting, Social Committee Chair and Board member Brenda Gardner reviewed projected activities for the coming year with Social Committee members. Brenda s goal is to set up sub-committees within the Social Committee to address the multiple functions and activities at the OSYC for the coming year. Examples of this include: (1) regatta support, (2) drawdown support, and (3) management of potential fundraising activities. The Social Committee will also be arranging support for decorating at the Club throughout the year, and for as many children s activities as can be supported by the Club and the committee. Please consider joining the Social Committee! This dedicated group and the OSYC itself will have a very active year. As last year s Social Committee co-chair, Patti Hughes encourages this year s Social Committee to recruit as many volunteers as possible to help out with Club events. Many hands make for less work for everyone involved! Thanks, Brenda Brenda Gardner OSYC Board Member and Social Committee Chair 2 of 7
