One in five hildren in our ommunity struggle with a mental health hallenge; a startling number, a disquieting fat. These hildren live in neighbourhoods aross Calgary. They live next door, they go to the shool down the street, and they deserve to be part of this ity as muh anyone. They are our hildren. Many of these kids have experiened trauma due to physial and sexual abuse, neglet, loss, grief, and more. Trauma that an lead to serious mental health hallenges: depression, anxiety, substane abuse, even thoughts of suiide. Mental health problems have a huge impat on a hild s development and that greatly impats their ability to build positive relationships with friends and family, and to thrive in the ommunity. And nearly 75 per ent of all mental health problems in adults begin in hildhood. Childhood mental health issues don t just end. Kids don t just grow out of them. Without intervention and support these same unhappy, angry hildren beome unhappy, angry adults. As these issues ontinue into adulthood, they lead to adult soial problems in our ommunities: rime, homelessness, additions and poverty; all of whih ost soiety billions of dollars every year. The human ost is inalulable. Now here s some good news. Hull Servies is responding to these dire irumstanes by providing servies to more than 3,500 hildren and their families on an annual basis. This is aomplished through 27 programs staffed by people who have the eduation, experiene, training and empathy to make a real differene. Ending Childhood Trauma - Creating a Bright Future I would have tantrums and throw my head into the wall, she realls. Throughout this period Hull provided are to Katie ensuring her ongoing safety while also helping maintain a onnetion to her mother through supervised visits. She enjoyed a period of stability and growth during her early adolesene and even took part in a program at a nearby horse farm where she learned how to are for the animals. Horses were my getaway, she says. Unfortunately this period of relative alm ended abruptly when her mentor at the farm died in her presene after being rushed when the trator he was operating flipped over. At 14, thrown into another risis, the loss threatened to overwhelm Katie. Until I was 19 I was self-harming, she says. I was drinking, taking pills, and utting myself. Admitted to Seure Servies at Hull on three separate oasions in order to stabilize her behaviour, Katie eventually began to understand how her traumati life experienes affeted her. This was post-traumati stress syndrome, she says. Katie and her daughter Mikayla. A four-year-old girl is admitted to a Calgary hospital due to extreme physial abuse. This isn t a headline pulled from a newspaper but the diffiult and all too real beginnings of Katie. Today a 28-year-old woman; throughout the majority of her hildhood and teen years, Katie faed what for most of us would seem to be insurmountable irumstanes. Her story is one of physial abuse, self-harm, grief, loss - and joy. I had four broken ribs, she says onjuring some of her earliest memories. There was a lot of anger my mother had being a single mother, she was isolated. One her ribs were healed Katie was disharged from hospital, but the wounds the ones that ause a hild to fear the world would take muh longer to reover from. She was taken to Hull Servies and later to a loal foster home. Consistent with a hild who has experiened signifiant trauma she demonstrated severe ating out behaviours. Armed with an indomitable inner strength and inspiring perseverane, Katie embraed the support and treatment Hull Servies offered her throughout this time and emerged from these dark years stronger and more determined than ever to have the kind of life she knew she deserved. Today Katie is a proud mother to a healthy baby girl, works on a asual basis as a nurse s aide and is planning her wedding, set for this June. Refleting on her life and what Hull Servies means to her she puts it this way, At Hull you grow a very large family. Adding, If it wasn t for Hull, I wouldn t be alive today.
