GAME NOTES WHAT TO WATCH: Freshman guard Raziyah Farrington was named to the SoCon All-Freshman Team by the coaches and the media. She has had a strong finish to the season. In the 84-80 win at UNCG Saturday she scored a career-high 24 points and also connected on a career-high 10 field goals. In the last two games, Farrington is avearging 20 points per game and shooting 56 percent from the field. She is the 13th Catamount to be named to the all-freshman team. Western Carolina is the seventh seed heading into the SoCon Tournament for the fourth time in the last five years. In that span, WCU is 2-1 as the seventh seed in the last three times it has been that seed. Western Carolina meets Chattanooga in the SoCon Championships for the 10th time. The Catamounts are 0-9 against the Mocs in the SoCon Championships. The Catamounts and the Mocs have met three times in the first round, the last coming in 1993. WCU and Chattanooga have met three times in the championship finals. In fact, the 2008 finals was the last time WCU faced the Mocs in the SoCon Championships with Chattanooga winning 71-59. Overall, Chattanooga holds a record of 67-11 against Western Carolina having won the last 12 meetings. Senior guard Lindsay Simpson has 172 career three pointers ranking her third in the Catamount record books. She needs seven three-pointers to move into second place currently held by former Catamount Yoneko Allen who has 178 (2001-04). Simpson is capable of making that mark as she has twice tied the school record for three-pointers in a game with eight. Western Carolina has hit at least one three-pointer in all 28 games and four or more 16 times. Western Carolina has had at least one player score in double figures in 27 of 28 games and has had two or more double figure scorers 19 times. Western Carolina s 1,755 points this season, as a team, is the 21st most points scored by a Catamount team in the WCU record books. With 21 more team points WCU can move up to 20th. WCU has connected on 118 three-pointers the season ranking 14th in the Catamount record books for three-pointers. WCU needs six three-pointers to move into 13th. Sophomore forward Sherae Bonner has 42 blocks this season ranking her seventh for blocks in a season. She needs two blocks to move into sixth. For a career, Bonner has 61 blocks ranking her tied for seventh. She has two more years to catch career blocks leader Shauna Terry who had 143 in her four year career as a Catamount (2010-14). Sophomore guard Ace Easter has carried the Catamount team many times this season. She is the only Catamount to average double figures, 11.8 points per game, and has scored in double figures 17 times and 20 or more points five times. She has a careerhigh 29 points in the loss to Wofford on Feb. 20. This season, Easter has scored 331 points upping her total from her freshman year of 297. In 58 games played, she has 628 career points looks to be well on her way to 1,000 points in her junior campaign. McCormick has served at five different institutions during her career including two stints as an assistant at Western Carolina. Her teams made nine postseason appearances with four apiece in both the NCAA Tournament and WNIT. She returns to Cullowhee after spending two years as an assistant coach at Siena College in Loudonville, N.Y. In her second year as an assistant at Siena, Mc- Cormick helped guide the Saints to a 22-13 overall record, advancing to the Women s Basketball Invitational (WBI) championship game. Siena s 22 wins this season were a 13-win improvement from the previous year, which was tied for the second-best turnaround in all of Division I women s basketball. Siena made its first national postseason tournament appearance in 12 years, and became the first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) school to win three games in a single postseason and advance to the championship game of a tournament. Prior to taking the position at Siena, McCormick spent nine years serving under Kellie Harper at both Western Carolina (2004-09) and North Carolina State (2009-13). During that time, she helped guide those schools to three NCAA Tournament and four WNIT berths. The Wolfpack made three postseason appearances during McCormick s four seasons and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2010. That season her recruiting efforts help land the 19th best recruiting class in the nation according to Blue Star Basketball, 28th by ESPN HoopGurlz and 29th by Premier Scouting Service. McCormick, who began her coaching career at Western Carolina from 1994-97 as an assistant to head coach Gary Peters, helped guide the Catamounts to four postseason berths in her five seasons working on Harper s staff, including a pair of Southern Conference titles. She also oversaw the program s academic success which captured three WBCA Academic Top-25 awards in five seasons including the 2007-08 squad which ranked fifth nationally. Prior to her second stint at Western Carolina, McCormick made coaching stops at Georgia Tech (2003-04), Charlotte (2001-03) and UNC Wilmington (1997-01), serving as the associate head coach during her final three seasons with the Seahawks at the latter. She was the recruiting coordinator at both Georgia Tech and Charlotte, which boasted the No. 5 and No. 24 ranked recruiting classes in the country in 2004 and 2002 respectively according to the All Star Girls Report.
