March Volume 161 March 2017 Hello fellow club members: WOW! We finally have a real winter again, one with lots of snow. Linda and I have updated skis this year that really handle the deep, new snow nicely and take some of the work out of skiing soft stuff. Now we need a break in the storms to enjoy more weekends in the mountains without road closures, and blackouts. Club elections are in April and all MSC Board positions are open for nominations in April, so please indicate your interest in the club and run for a position of your choice. Note, Trump is not a member of this club, there will be no Tweets attacking you. WWW.MODESTOSKICLUB.COM MSC is an active social club and we have activities ( active activities) for all members scheduled year round. We also participate in the FWSA Ski Racing Program via the BAC Open League Racing Program. This is a great skiing program for skiers of all skill levels to meet fellow skiers of similar abilities from other bay area, and Northern California clubs. I have also found the race schedule induces me to plan more ski trips and do more skiing at a reasonable cost. Talk to Maarten Vandermeer (209-482-2056) our club Race Director for more info. As a club member, consider a multi-day trip to our Mile High Club Lodge in Truckee, where you can choose each morning from 3 resorts on Donner Pass, 2 on the Sierra crest or North Star on its own mountain south of Truckee. All of these resorts are within a 20 min. drive. In addition, cross country skiing and dog sledding are available. A MSC SKI BEAR (BARE?) DAY IS PLANNED FOR THURSDAY MARCH 23 (a spring day?) AT BEAR VALLEY. This is a MSC ski day planned for a lunch at 12:00 noon and to bring your favorite wine to share, (On the outdoor deck, if weather permits). Call Jim Sylvia (209-262-8859) to sign up and get further details and to get on the lunch list. ALSO, A CIOPPINO DINNER AT THE LODGE WILL BE ON SATURDAY MARCH 11. Again call Jim (209-262-8859) for details. This was very good when last done a few years ago and I will not miss it (we have our reservation already). Check out this newsletter for all the details of meetings, activities, trips, and other coming attractions. (They can change occasionally). Also, talk to me about skiing locally. March Meeting will be at Fuzio s on Tuesday March 14, 2017 as traditionally scheduled. Chuck Hennings President
MODESTO SKI CLUB LODGE NEWS Greetings! Wow, spring is almost here and we still have an abundance of snow. Rumor has it that some of the ski resorts may stay open until July!! The Lodge has been getting some use this Winter and I think would be getting more if we didn t get a storm every weekend. I myself don t really want to spend 10+ hours in the car either direction to Truckee or getting back home. Members and guests that can go mid-week have it soooo good. Our Spring Lodge Clean-Up Weekend Date is TBD due to the amazing amount of snow that surrounds the Lodge and is currently blocking the external dryer vent so the dryer cannot be used A couple of housekeeping issues. Please CLOSE and LOCK the WINDOW S in the BEDROOMS that you were staying in. Please CLOSE the BLINDS!! Do your part in cleaning and be sure to initial the chores list that you have actually done some cleaning while you are staying at the Lodge. Thanks in advance for all of your help in keeping the Lodge always ready for members and guests to visit. Be sure to let me know if anything needs attention at the Lodge. Best way to contact me is via email as I can respond very quickly; mnighte@aol.com is my email. Thanks! Michelle Nightengale, Lodge Chairperson

Hello skiers and boarders Well, we finally have snow but the result is the cancelation of our first two races at Northstar. It is hard to set up a safe course after that much snow, so Debi Phelps and Northstar made the right decision. We are trying to reschedule but the resorts are all doing their best to catch up so it is hard to find an opening. Next race is Slalom at Sugarbowl February 11 th and 12 th. Let s hope we can get it in this time. Make sure you confirm or cancel your reservation with Michelle at least two days before going to the lodge. We have to make sure we all do our share of the tasks at the lodge. That can mean clearing snow of the steps to the front door and to the basement, restocking firewood, cleaning up our area, etc. With this much snow, it takes a lot of work to keep the lodge accessible. One of our members has been active on the race course. Emily Gahn, daughter of Mike and Kathy Gahn (and my granddaughter) and former race team member of MSC is part of the Alpine Ski Team of the College of Idaho. Camille and I watched her team race at Mount Hood Meadows this past weekend. Her team won slalom races both Saturday and Sunday and the man s team won Sunday. Emily finished in 18 th place Saturday and DQ on Sunday. She straddled a gate and the judges determined that she did not hike up far enough. Last week in Tamarack, Idaho, she finished 10 th and 12 th in her GS races. Very good results for a person who never had any real race training before she went to college. Most other athletes have been racing since they were little kids. Hope to see you all at the next race. Keep doing your snow dance. Our race team: Richard Shawkey, Tim Hutton, Charles Hennings, Linda Hennings, Kyle Gahn, Lauren Gahn, Nathan Gahn and I. Have a great ski season, Maarten Vandermeer. Our schedule for 2016/2017 Ski Season Mar 18th Heavenly Valley SL Mar 19th Heavenly Valley GS Mar 31st-Apr 2nd Finals at Mammoth Mountain. We are planning a fun event (maybe club against club race) for Mar 25 with the Awards Banquet in the evening. Stay tuned. For more information, feel free to contact me, Maarten Vandermeer. BAC 2017 Things to remember; Upcoming Events: FWSA Convention will be held June 2017, in Boise, ID. If you are interested attending, go to http://www.fwsa.org/conventions/fw-2017conv/fw-2017conv.html to register as a delegate. Please notify Michelle Nightengale, mnighte@aol.com after enrolling as she needs to keep track of how many MSC members will be attending this Convention. More information will be provided at the March 14th General Meeting at Fuzio s. FWSA Ski Week 2018 The destination is Banff! There are three nearby ski areas Sunshine, Norquay, and Lake Louise. To secure a spot for this trip, please make a check payable to BAC in the amount of $200.00, that are being collected by Bill Silveira. Gail Burns, the BAC Travel Director posted the following: Next year's FWSA Ski Week trip will be to Banff, Canada from February 3-10, 2018. We will be accepting initial deposits on March 13th at the General BAC Meeting or by mail. During our site inspection to Banff last month, the Council Trip Leaders toured all the lodging properties which included: the historic Fairmont Banff Springs Ho- tel, Banff Park Lodge, Ptarmigan Inn, Bow River Lodge and Caribou Inns. The BAC Skiers will have their choice of three ski areas: Sunshine Village, Lake Louise and Norquay all on the same lift ticket. The surrounding Banff mountains are stunning and beautiful with craggy peaks, lake and ice fields. Since Banff is located in a National Park, sighting of elk, moose, and other wildlife are common. We are anticipating a large contingency of BAC ski club members who will want to join in on this exciting trip. The week-long lodging will range from $995-$1,440 depending on the type of accommodations that you choose. A Trip Flyer will be posted on our BAC website (skibac.org) when we receive our BAC group allotment for this trip. Stay tuned... Wishing you a wonderful ski season, Gail Burns BAC Travel Director
