September 2018 Welcome to the September edition of The Point. Firstly, I would like to thank Michael Petersen for his tenure as President for the last 3 years. Michael has been on the Committee for more than 12 years. In his role as President we have seen good progress for the Club and he is continuing on the committee as Vice President. It is great to be involved with a committed team of club members and in particular the Management Committee Members who put in the extra effort to keep the club financially healthy and running smoothly in order for our members to enjoy the facilities and competition. A reminder to all club members: this is your club, your facilities to enjoy and to treasure. Please be involved with the social activities, be part of the committees and sub committees. Your input and suggestions are so important. Your assistance makes the clubhouse, courts and surrounding environment clean, cared for and well maintained. Please also welcome visitors to our club with the hospitality we are renowned for. We do need your support for the Club teams by coming along and watching games played at the club or at other venues, including our junior teams and the special Caro Bowl team - they all deserve our audience. The Club Open day on Sunday 26 th August was well attended, thank you. It was a great day with interested people coming along to see just what the club is all about. A number of new ladies turned up to the Midweek Open Day on Wednesday 12 th and were treated with a fabulous Champagne breakfast and sunshine on tap. Thanks so much to everyone involved with organising and attending the recent Quiz night and to everyone who donated prizes. It was a great success. Best of luck for the coming season. Michelle Braid Club President The Point 1

SENIORS Senior Summer Interclub Senior summer interclub tennis started on the 1 st September. If you missed out on a team feel free to put your name down as a reserve for the season. Attached are the teams and schedule. If in doubt, check it out online at http://tennis.org.nz/interclubcompetitiongradeslist.asp?cnid=2893 Senior Twilight Interclub Entries are now open for the 2018-2019 Senior Twilight Interclub competition. It is scheduled to start on Monday 29 th and Tuesday 30 th October. There are both Singles and Doubles grades on both nights (depending on entries received) and players can play on both nights if they wish. The Singles competition allows up to four people to play each contest (two singles and one doubles match played). The Doubles competition has four players each contest, playing two doubles matches each. Both competitions use sudden death deuce, with a super tie-break decider if tied at one set all. Start time is 6.30pm. Tennis Auckland have looked at a regional competition for Twilight previously, but this didn t get off the ground due to a lack of numbers. We will look into this again once entries are received this year and will let you know if this is likely to happen. The final day for entering teams is SUNDAY 7th OCTOBER. Members can form their own teams or express interest to the club and we can enter a team(s) if there is enough interest. Senior Mixed Doubles Club Champs The Sunnyhills Tennis Club Senior Mixed Doubles Club Champs the 11 th November, so start your doubles partner negotiations now! Social Tennis Mad Men s Mondays is starting after daylight savings in October from 6pm. This is a casual format of tennis aimed at nothing in particular! All welcome for a hit around. MIDWEEK LADIES Midweek Ladies Winter Outdoor Interclub Only a few weeks left of the Winter Interclub season and the teams are going well! As there are no points at stake the ladies can make the most of this time by tweaking their serve or working on a particular shot. Best of luck for the remaining games and let s hope the sun shines on Tuesdays. Midweek Ladies Lead-in Interclub I am now taking names and feedback for Lead-In teams which will begin play on Tuesday, 16th October and runs for 7 weeks (one week off for Labour Weekend) so get in touch to ensure your place. Deadline is 14th September with teams being announced in the first week of October. Midweek Ladies Christmas Party Save the date, it s only 14 weeks until our famous Midweek Ladies Christmas Party our Entertainment Troupe is working on their hilarious skits and songs to keep you in stitches. Mark your diary for Wednesday, 12th December now! Kind regards Laura Beattie Midweek Ladies Convener 027 223 5399 JUNIORS Welcome to all new and returning juniors for the start of an exciting season of tennis. It was great to see so many of our Juniors on court at our open day last month and plenty of new young players having a go. We welcome all our new Junior members and hope you enjoy your new experiences with Sunnyhills Tennis Club. It s all about learning a new set of skills whilst having some fun along the way. The tennis season kicks off in Term 4 after school holidays! Our Hot Shots programme and our Junior coaching groups begin the week of 15th October. On court will be our Head Coach Gabriel together with our Kiwi Tennis support coach and our own Sunnyhills junior assistants - welcome back Jamie, Tom and Axel... it s so great to have you all. 3

Our coaching for all groups begins the week of 15 th October please refer to the attached TERM 4 TIMETABLE for easy reference to your relevant FUNDED group for DAY AND TIME. Coaching Groups Gabriel will be working on this document to ensure all Juniors are placed in their correct group. It is important that you are placed in the correct level as coaching groups are based on ability. Gabriel will make any changes required as we get into the season. The list will be sent out to all our Juniors ASAP. JUNIOR HOT SHOTS RED / ORANGE / GREEN Tennis Hot Shots is the kids programme for ages 5-12 that we are offering again this year through our coaching providers Kiwi Tennis. Using softer balls, shorter racquets and smaller courts kids progress from the Red low compression ball through Orange and then Green dot all the while improving their technique without facing the speed of a normal tennis ball. Hot Shots begins Saturday 20th October Red 1 Sat 8:00-8:45am Red 2 Sat 8:45-9:30am Orange Sat 9:30-10:30am Green Sat 10:30-11:30am A holiday programme for Hot Shots will run in the second week of the holidays (8th-12th October) for the morning session 9am-12pm. Our Junior interclub teams are being finalised and submitted to Auckland Tennis; these teams will be posted next week. Once again this year one child per team will be appointed as Captain. The parent of the captain will be asked to manage their child s team for the term. This responsibility is shared on a term basis and is not onerous. 4

A holiday programme for Interclub training will run in the second week of the holidays (8th- 12th October) for the afternoon session 1pm-5pm either on a daily basis or for the whole week. It would be great to see this supported so adequate numbers can allow it to go ahead. They're just 2 of a bigger group of young Sunnyhills TC players that have been working hard during the winter months & the results are already showing! Pic: Elise & Marcus during the prize ceremony where they won a tennis bag & a tennis racquet! I've come across a very good article on what makes a club successful (or other way around). Have a read and make sure you're also part of our success story by joining one of our many committees! Here s a link to it below, otherwise I've posted it on the club's Facebook site where you can read it. https://kiwitennis.co.nz/programme/school-holiday-tennis-coaching-camp/sunnyhills-tennis-holidayprogramme https://www.stuff.co.nz/manawatu-standard/opinion/106149013/tennis-faces-its-challenges-soeveryone-must-act 5

Our Women's Caro Bowl team is confirmed and we'll be sending more info in the weeks to come. We encourage all members to come to watch and support our games, especially our home matches where our club committee will put out great catering for those in attendance. For the Juniors it is a great chance to watch some of the best tennis there is on a National level! As part of our continuous support to our Junior programme, during all our home games, all Junior members will be invited to come prior to the start of the matches to have a chance to play and interact with these players and listen to our Head Coach give the final coaching instructions to the Caro Bowl players. Finally also myself, with the support from the committee, I'll be playing Men's Caro Bowl for Eden Epsom for some matches (as well as their Reserve Team), as long as they don t clash with any of the women's! Feel free to come and watch too! Pic: Contract-signing event at Eden Epson tennis club with the rest of the Caro Bowl team. Kind Regards Gabriel Hernandez Head Coach 021 0259 9086 PEAK FITNESS 6
