The Yacht Club of Hilton Head Island The Main Sheet July, 2012 MESSAGE FROM THE COMMODORE The open house day on June 9 th was a huge success. Thanks to Leslie Gilroy, Helen and Jim Kola and everyone else who helped make it a great event. We had about 25 prospective members come to see our facilities and what we have to offer. Leslie reported that the expense of the open house was almost offset by the new members. Thanks also to Jim Vaughn who took out several of those on his Flying Scot for an hour or so. We have gained 7 new members. They were all approved at the June board meeting. Please welcome them to the club. They are Joel & Tina Moore, George & Marty Cohen, Mike & Corinne Roe, Brooks MacFarquher, Robert Brouillard & Carolyn Fabish, Richard & Beverly Nyman, and John & Carol Lang. The club recently sold two of the JY-15 s we had in storage to member Terry Keane who took them to upstate SC (Keowee) for a sailing club where he has moved. He is also purchasing the other JY-15. These boats have not been used in years and the sailing committee thought it was best to sell them since we now have several Sunfish, which are lighter and easier to rig. Jim Vaughn has put been busy getting these boats in shape so they are ready for members to use. Morris Young recently donated a Sunfish for the club s use. Many thanks to Jim and Morris. The club s red Flying Scot is in the water and ready to use. If you have been checked out and know how to rig, please feel free to sail it. The 1 st Saturday in July, the 7 th, we plan to have a Beer Can Regatta from the dock with the Sunfish sailboats about 11 AM. Please come down and join in the fun. Lunch will be provided at no cost. We have been working hard to get these boats ready. I feel that boating will keep the club vibrant and attract new members. The board approved to proceed with the survey of the club s boundaries to see if there is space to build a dock from our property into Broad Creek. I have had several estimates and the board is considering the next move. I will keep you informed of the progress. I hope we can move forward and complete this to further attract new members. I recently installed some new extended lighting over the serving tables. Thanks go to Philippe DeLangre who helped me complete this. This will help to light up the food area better. We also hung up about 30 or so pendants from other Yacht Clubs down the center of the club. They were in storage and needed to be displayed. As I write this, 18 members of the club are eating lunch at Buffalo s Restaurant at Palmetto Bluff. Several members went by sea and a few by land. Thanks to Cecil (Sonny) Viverette for putting this outing together. Blue skies shone upon them. We plan to have the survey ready by next month. Sorry for the delay but some of the questions needed some tweaking. Have a safe and wonderful July 4th. Sonny Compher, Commodore

BOATERS REPORT For the month of June, Cecil and Francis Viverette were the YC s volunteer boating event planners and they put together a great luncheon trip to Palmetto Bluff. Cecil gives us a review of the event with the following report: June Outing to Palmetto Bluff After a few days of stormy weather the skies cleared for our June 27th lunch outing to Buffaloes at Palmetto Bluff. The lingering wind made the trip by water more interesting, but all in all it was a great day. Dave Shkor and crew and Cecil Viverette and crew made the trip up the beautiful May River. Jim Landis, being the prudent Captain that he is, turned his planned water cruise to a land cruise after discovering a faulty main bilge pump. Most of the group of seventeen did some sightseeing around Wilson Village before heading home. Our group picture was taken at the mansion ruins with the river in the background. Cecil Viverette On Sunday, June 3rd, four YC skippers made a spur of the moment decision to do a lunch run to the Back Porch Grill at Port Royal Landing Marina. Dave and Diane Stortz, Ivan and Betty Bush, Bill and Sandy Wing, and Dave Shkor along with crew totaled 15 people at the Grill for a delightful lunch and day on the water. Just a reminder to YC skippers, there are no official YC boating events scheduled for July and August as so many of our skippers are traveling or out of town for the summer. (And it s too dam hot). However, if you have a wild hair to do something on the water and want some company, make a few phone calls and you might be surprised at how quickly other skippers will join you. To date, five visiting Hilton Head Hero families have gone on personal boat trips sponsored by the YC. Dave Shkor the powerboat guy The group in front of the Ruins at Palmetto Bluff
ACE BASIN TOUR Helen Kola We are planning a tour of the ACE Basin on Thursday, September 13, 2012. The tour is provided by Captain Stan, a former coast guard captain and shrimper with life-long experience of the ACE Basin. He has extensive knowledge of the history and wildlife of the area. Anita and Gary Peal took the tour recently and gave it 5 stars. This trip is open to couples and singles. The cost will be $32 a person. Captain Stan can accommodate only 21 people on his 38 foot Coast Guard approved pontoon boat. The tour begins at 10:00 and lasts three hours. We can take our lunch and eat on the boat or the dock or we can eat at Berry Island Restaurant, which he highly recommends. It is well known for its crab cakes and homemade ice cream, says Captain Stan. If you are interested in this trip call or e-mail me, Helen Kola, to get your name on the list. It won t take long to have 21 people sign up. If there should be another 21 people who would like to go Captain Stan will do a 2:00 tour as well. The tour begins on Coosaw Island which is about an hours drive from the Hilton Head Island Bridge. It is on Lady s Island. If you want to learn more go to www.acebasintours.com on the web. Remember the first 21 to sign up will get to go. What: ACE Basin Tour When: September 13m 2012 10:00 AM 1:00 PM Where: Coosaw Island at Lady s Island
