News From The American Le Mans Series - Canadian Tire Motorsport Park 2012 Seth Neiman and the ALMS SPORTSMEN OH CANADA! FELLOWS MARCELLI GT3 CUP www.michelinalley.com

2 RON FELLOWS A CANADIAN motorsports legend and one of North America s most versatile and popular drivers, Ron Fellow is on the other side of the proverbial fence this week. As a driver, Fellows is a two-time 24 Hours of Le Mans winner, three-time American Le Mans Series champion and four times voted the Series most popular driver. These days he wears a new hat, often a construction hard hat, as part of the Canadian Motorsports Ventures, Ltd, ownership group with transportation industry leader Al Boughton and real estate developer Carlo Fidani. Mosport has been a big part of my life. I went to my first race in 1969 as an 11-year-old kid and here is where I was bitten by the bug to go racing. A lot of my first wins came at Mosport, said Fellows. The first Canadian to win a NASCAR Nationwide Series event, Fellows and his business partners realized Mosport needed significant investment and energy to keep it relevant and successful going forward. We had to improve the infrastructure of the paddock, getting in and out of the property for the competitors, said Fellows, who is quickly learning the costs of being a race-track operator and promoter. We installed a brand new tunnel in Turn 9. You can drive two tractortrailers through that tunnel side by side. You can enter through Gate 3 and drive through the tunnel into the infield, continued Fellows. Previously the track had to be shut down to bring competitors haulers into the paddock. Another big change is the name of the track itself to Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. Having a marketing partner like Canadian Tire, we feel like it is really going to help grow motorsports and create a lot more racing interest, said Fellows. That is why spectator improvements are a big part of the plan. We have done a lot of grading to improve the sightlines for spectators, said Fellows. We created some new areas for camping. We also have a road that goes from one end of the property to the other so it now connects the grand prix track - to the kart track - to the oval track and to the driver-development track. You no longer have to go on public roads to get to these facilities. This big wave of improvements isn t the end for one of motorsports most challenging and historic tracks. Fellows, who scored his first Trans Am win here in 1989, reports that there is still much more to come. We need a registration building, we are working on a plan for a new events center including a media center and timing and scoring and administration. When one of the hardest working, most successful and most popular people in motorsports gets rolling, the result is typically great success. Whether as a driver or race promoter, Ron Fellows knows how to find the winner s circle. SHIFTING

OH CANADA 3 THE FASTEST-GROWING singlemake series in North America joins the American Le Mans Series this weekend at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. The Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by enters its second year with more entries and races. The Porsche GT3 Cup car is among the most widely raced cars in North America and an excellent car for developing new drivers. Canada is the 20th country worldwide to host a Porsche GT3 Cup series. The series splits the field into categories based on the model year of the Porsche GT3 Cup car. Cars built in 2010-2012 fall into the Platinum Cup, while the Gold Cup is for Porsches built from mid-2005 to 2009, and Silver Cup for Porsches built from 2002 to mid- 2005. Etienne Borgeat (#2 GT Racing) has won three of the five races in the Platinum Cup and holds a slight lead in the championship over Perry Bortolotti (#84 6th Gear Racing), the defending series champion. Bruce Gregory (#18 SpeedMerchants) has four Gold Cup wins to date and holds the championship lead over Robert Maranda and Shaun McKaigue. Kyle Marcelli s HOMECOOKING THE 2012 ALMS season has not gone exactly according to plan for Barrie, Ontario s Kyle Marcelli--yet. A return to his home track this weekend may be just what he needs to change his racing luck. Now in his third season of ALMS PC class competition, Marcelli, 22, posted wins at Mid-Ohio and Baltimore in 2011 before joining the Merchant Services Racing team as co-driver of the #8 Prototype Challenge class entry for 2012. Despite Marcelli s speed, the early season results are mixed. After a retirement at Sebring and a fourth at Long Beach, Marcelli led the third race of the ALMS season at Monterey - until suffering mechanical issues with just five minutes remaining in the six-hour race. At the recent Lime Rock race, Marcelli took the third pole position of his young career but never got his turn at the wheel as his car was out before the first driver change. We have had a bit of a rocky road this year, said Marcelli. That road now leads him back home. With a growing base of family, friends and fans cheering him on, a win at his home track would be one to remember.

4 SPORTSMEN GREG PICKETT ED BROWN C A P T A I N S O F I N D U S T R THE SECRET TO THE success of sportscar racing in general and the American Le Mans Series in particular are the sportsmen team owners. These accomplished entrepreneurs have a passion for the sport that is matched only by their business acumen. Three of the most successful teams in the ALMS are led by such sportsmen: Seth Neiman of Flying Lizard Motorsports Porsche in GT, Greg Pickett of the LMP1 Muscle Milk Pickett HPD Honda team and Jon Bennett of CORE autosport in PC. Ironically, each saw their cars win their respective class at the most recent ALMS race at Lime Rock Park. Seth Neiman, founder of Flying Lizard Motorsports, saw his career take him from music through the computer revolution to engineering, then to executive and CEO roles before landing in the venture capital world. Since joining the ALMS in 2004, the Flying Lizard Motorsports Porsches have claimed 21 race wins and the 2008 and 2009 ALMS GT class championships. Greg Pickett founded CytoSport, makers of Cytomax and Muscle Milk. Pickett, a legend in Trans Am competition and now retired as a driver, returned to the ALMS in 2009. Since then, his team has racked up 10 race wins and currently leads the 2012 ALMS P1 class championships with drivers Lucas Luhr and Klaus Graf. Jon Bennett, team owner and co-driver of CORE autosport, owns a company that uses composites and carbon fiber products to find engineering solutions. He entered the ALMS in 2011 and his team claimed two race wins and the 2011 ALMS PC class championship. In 2012, CORE has taken the PC class wins in all four ALMS events to date. While not a team owner, Ed Brown, CEO of Patrón Spirits, is a sponsor and driver whose passion for the sport and business and marketing savvy plays a continuing role in the success of the sport and the emergence of Scott Sharp s Extreme Speed Motorsports Ferrari team. The Alley met with Seth Neiman at the 24 Hours of Le Mans to talk about his team. His comments may surprise you. Why did you start your own team? Early on, I realized that a ride/drive program wasn t going to make me happy as a customer. To do it right, we had to own a team. When we first started racing, I realized that I had some knowledge and skills that some of the people didn t have. There were two key things: first, to construct an organization and second to hire great people who could create stability in the organization, for the potential to go beyond what we could do individually. What was your approach? We wanted to hire the best athletes, people who are natural pros, intelligent and good communicators. We needed people who can listen, learn and develop talent and the ability to work together.

SPORTSMEN 5 SETH NEIMAN JON BENNETT Y + R A C I N G D R I V E R = Once we identified the key people like Craig Watkins, Tommy Sadler, Eric Ingraham, Thomas Blam and Jennifer Hart, we spent the next six months creating FLM. We came out at Daytona in 2004, ran second at Sebring and won Mid- Ohio. We had success early, but after Sebring we saw that we had a lot to learn. What did FLM get from your business background? Good businesses tell themselves the truth all the time. They are forced to deal with reality. Cash flow and customers are reality and good businesses have a cold eye on what is working and what is not. Good business also tolerates failure. If you are trying things, you will fail sometimes. You take risks. Is racing a business, if so what business? Contrary to what many think, running a successful business is not necessarily an automatic carry-over to a race team. Racing is not a business in the traditional sense. Businesses live and die by cash flow and cash flow is making customers happy. We don t have any customers. The upside is that the passion of racing and winning and the spirit is fundamental to marketing objectives. Half of being a racing team is being a small car manufacturer. Basically we are rebuilding a car 15 times per year. The process is the same - ordering parts, building and tracking, inspecting and testing. Businesses recognize organizational methodology. The racing changes constantly, why does your team seem so stable? Stability is a big part of our team. We want people who stay, not people who are changing jobs every 18 months. We want people who bring stability, good communications and intelligence. We plan, build a plan and follow it up. It is hard to own a team and maintain stability. There are lots of momentum swings, up and down. What do we need to learn from this? How do we fix it? It took us two or three years to get that. We have been with our key partners like Porsche and since we started. What is your race day model? We build our business and team through testing and planning, but, once we are trackside, we want to race like Navy Seals. We have a limited time to execute our mission at a race track. We practice, have a sense of continuity, and we get people ready for military-style execution. Why do this? I love it because it is hard. I saw something we could contribute to and have passion for. Our objective is to build the best sports car team in the world. I am still learning.

6 DIJYANO? The night before our Laguna win in May, Jon and I went out to dinner, toasted to victory and it came true. Lime Rock? Same deal! CORE autosport s Colin Braun looks to again try a toast the night before the Mosport race with Jon Bennett this weekend Dijyano DID YOU KNOW Hat s on! Hats off, well, actually podium hats on please for Dempsey Racing s Patrick Dempsey and Joe Foster. The team scored its first ALMS podium at Lime Rock with a third place finish in P2. Their PC team with Duncan Ende and Henri Richard also took a third place to make it a double-podium day. 98, 99, 100! The Lime Rock race marked the 100th start for a quartet of the ALMS finest as Joerg Bergmeister, Jan Magnussen, Bill Auberlen and Butch Leitzinger hit the century mark in ALMS competition. Bergmeister and co-driver Patrick Long took the win for Flying Lizard Porsche while Corvette Racing s Magnussen and Antonio Garcia finished second. Extreme Speed Motorsport s Johannes van Overbeek is the next driver to hit the 100 mark this weekend in Canada. SORRY, NO CREDIT CARDS Level 5 driver Christophe Bouchut described a series of high-speed turns at Lime Rock Park noting the speeds and limited run-offs, if you make a mistake there, you pay cash! Not sure if that drew a laugh from team owner Scott Tucker who operates a payday loan business. Alley Live www.michelinalley.com Follow a live Blog with features, race insights, interviews, videos, photos and highlights from all 2012 ALMS events. Your top five? The American Le Mans Series recently named its Top Five Best Drivers of All-Time. Corvette Racing s Olivier Beretta and Johnny O Connell were #1 and #2 respectively. Lucas Luhr, Oliver Gavin and Joerg Bergmeister rounded out the top five. Luhr (3), Gavin (2) and Bergmeister (1) have all posted wins in the first four races this season. Let the debates begin. Nice ride Doug Fehan left the Lime Rock Park circuit about 15 minutes before the Corvette Racing team headed to their rental cars for the drive to the hotel. Fehan rode his bicycle over the hilly 25-mile route and still arrived first. Did we mention that Fehan raced a USAC stock car here at Mosport (now Canadian Tire Motorsport Park) back in the day. Winners! Porsche s Joerg Bergmeister now has 35 wins in 100 ALMS race starts. That is a.350 batting average, a strike rate higher than Tiger Woods and a better free throw percentage than some 7 footers. Considering there are no points for ties or shoot outs and there are 10-12 cars in the class rather than two teams on the ice, that may rival some hockey teams.
