GAME NOTES WHAT TO WATCH: Senior forward Lindsey Burleson had a career-game against Charleston Southern with her first career double-double and career-highes in points (13) and rebounds (10). Freshman guard Angel Allen got the first start of her Catamount career against Charleston Southern. With the loss to Charleston Southern, Western Carolina has not won its game before Christmas break since 2006 when the Catamounts defeated UNCG 53-52 - a side note, current Head Coach Stephanie McCormick was an assistant under then head coach Kellie Harper during that win. Western Carolina had three players score in double figures, against Charleston Southern, the first time since having three in the win over Anderson on Nov. 15. The 80 points scored by Charleston Southern is the third most scored by an opponent this season. Western Carolina lost its fourth straight game and has yet to win a game in the month of December. Western Carolina has pulled down 50 or more rebounds twice this season both times equating to wins. Western Carolina has had at least one player score in double figures in all 11 games to start the season... The Catamounts have had two or more double figure scorers seven times. Senior forward Brianne Mack had a careerhigh three blocks against Charleston Southern. Western Carolina s game at Duke comes after the Catamounts seven-day break - it is the last game of 2015 for WCU and the seventh game of an eight-game road swing... The contest against Duke is also the first time WCU has faced a ranked opponent this season. The last time WCU defeated a ranked opponent was Nov. 17, 2007 when the Catamounts knocked off No. 21 Louisville, 77-72 at a tournament held at Minnesota... Current head coach Stephanie McCormick was an assistant for the team. Senior guard Lindsay Simpson has 750 career points and needs 250 points to reach the 1,000 point plateau... Should she does so, Simpson would be the first Catamount to reach 1,000 points since former WCU player Kaila Shea Menendez in the 2011-12 season. Western Carolina returns 10 players from the 2014-15 season and welcomes three newcomers to the squad. Western Carolina has four of its five top scorers coming back from the 2014-15 season lead by sophomore guard Ace Easter who avearged 9.9 points per game... Right behind Easter, in the scoring department from a year ago, is senior Lindsay Simpson who averaged 6.4. Western Carolina was picked to finish seventh by the coaches and sixth in the media in the SoCon Preseason poll. McCormick has served at five different institutions during her career including two stints as an assistant at Western Carolina. Her teams made nine postseason appearances with four apiece in both the NCAA Tournament and WNIT. She returns to Cullowhee after spending two years as an assistant coach at Siena College in Loudonville, N.Y. In her second year as an assistant at Siena, Mc- Cormick helped guide the Saints to a 22-13 overall record, advancing to the Women s Basketball Invitational (WBI) championship game. Siena s 22 wins this season were a 13-win improvement from the previous year, which was tied for the second-best turnaround in all of Division I women s basketball. Siena made its first national postseason tournament appearance in 12 years, and became the first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) school to win three games in a single postseason and advance to the championship game of a tournament. Prior to taking the position at Siena, McCormick spent nine years serving under Kellie Harper at both Western Carolina (2004-09) and North Carolina State (2009-13). During that time, she helped guide those schools to three NCAA Tournament and four WNIT berths. McCormick, who began her coaching career at Western Carolina from 1994-97 as an assistant to head coach Gary Peters, helped guide the Catamounts to four postseason berths in her five seasons working on Harper s staff, including a pair of Southern Conference titles. She also oversaw the program s academic success which captured three WBCA Academic Top-25 awards in five seasons including the 2007-08 squad which ranked fifth nationally. Prior to her second stint at Western Carolina, McCormick made coaching stops at Georgia Tech (2003-04), Charlotte (2001-03) and UNC Wilmington (1997-01), serving as the associate head coach during her final three seasons with the Seahawks at the latter. In 2013, she was inducted into the Catawba College Sports Hall of Fame in its 36th class. 4 Western Carolina Women s Basketball Game Notes 2015-16
