Playing its fourth road game out of the last five, Santa Clara women s basketball heads to West Coast Conference leading Gonzaga Saturday at 2 p.m. QUICK HITS Santa Clara is 29-37 all-time against Gonzaga with the first meeting coming in 1987-88. Earlier this year, the Bulldogs came into Leavey and left with a victory. On Thursday at home, the Broncos lost a tight game to San Francisco 58-54. Santa Clara s 57.7 points per game allowed is tops in the WCC. The 34 points allowed at San Diego State (Dec. 14) was the fewest allowed on the road by Santa Clara since an 88-31 win at Sacramento State on Dec. 15, 2000. The Broncos point total or 104 against Menlo (Dec. 10) was the fourth most in program history and the most since a program-best 112 vs. Simpson on Nov. 4, 2015. They also grabbed 62 rebounds, the third most in program history and most since having 64 vs. Morgan State on Nov. 27,1994. The Broncos held Illinois-Chicago (Nov. 25) to 36 points. It was the fewest against a Division I opponent since allowing 33 to UC Santa Barbara Nov. 20, 2014 and the fewest on the road since also allowing 36 at Pepperdine Jan. 17, 2013. Santa Clara will be without Emily Wolph after an injury. Wolph was All- WCC honorable mention last season after leading the WCC in 3-pointers made and the Broncos with 12.8 ppg and 3.7 apg. Santa Clara has six newcomers on the roster: transfers Erica Meyer (Providence), Joeseta Fatuesi (Utah), Lauren Yearwood (Oregon, and Charise Holloway (Arizona) and freshmen Madison Piper and Alexis Brigham. Meyer, Fatuesi, and Yearwood have to sit out the year due to NCAA transfer rules. The Broncos represent four different countries: the United States, Australia, New Zealand, and China. Santa Clara also has players from eight different states: California, Washington, Nevada, Arizona, Connecticut, Kansas Texas, and Pennsylvania. Kevin Danna and Joe Ritzo will split play-by-play duties for all Bronco home games this season. Ritzo is the San Jose Giants announcer and Danna calls games for the Santa Cruz Warriors. During the 2016-17 season, Carr guided the Broncos to 14 wins and nine in West Coast Conference play. He coached three All-WCC selections in Lori Parkinson, Marie Bertholdt, and Emily Wolph. Carr has been a men s head basketball coach for 11 years and compiled a record of 202-132 (.601) at Point Loma Nazarene, UC San Diego, and Spring Hill College. He has more than 25 years of coaching experience, including extensive West Coast Conference experience, with Division I stops as associate head coach at San Diego and Long Beach State and as an assistant at San Francisco. Prior to joining the Broncos, Carr spent five seasons as the leader of Point Loma Nazarene. Under Carr the Sea Lions made the move from NAIA to Division II in 2012. Despite these challenges the PLNU men s basketball program thrived in the five seasons under Carr, posting a record of 81-63 (.563). THE BRONCOS Santa Clara s (5-13, 1-6 WCC) conference-leading defense allows 57.7 points per game while forcing 16.9 turnovers per game and collecting 9.4 steals per game. Morgan McGwire leads the team in scoring (10.6 ppg), rebounding (8.7 pg), steals (2.2 pg), and blocks (1.9 pg). Ashlyn Herlihy is second on the team with 9.5 ppg and leads the way with 16 3-pointers made. She also adds 4.9 rpg. Kyla Martin s 4.8 assists per game is third in the WCC and she adds 8.7 ppg. Taylor Berry is second on the Broncos in rebounding with 6.6 pg and scores 7.8 ppg. THE BULLDOGS Gonzaga (14-4, 7-0 WCC) is riding a nine-game winning streak and is second in the conference in both scoring (72.8 ppg) and scoring defense (60.5 ppg). The Bulldogs plus-12.3 scoring margin is tops in the league. Jill Barta scores 18.1 ppg, second in the WCC, and leads the team with 8.8 rpg as well. Zykera Rice is scoring 12.9 ppg with 5.7 rpg and Chandler Smith scores 11.4 ppg with 6.6 rpg. Jessie Loera leads Gonzaga with 3.8 apg and scores 6.4 ppg as well. CAREER-BESTS Santa Clara has had several players set career-bests so far this season. Redshirt freshman Ashlyn Herlihy scored a career-high 16 points against Northwestern on Nov. 22 while also setting a career-best with seven rebounds. In the Broncos next game against San Jose State (Nov. 28), she topped both. Against the Spartans Herlihy scored 23 with nine rebounds and was 5-for-7 from beyond the arc. Herlihy again set career-highs against Menlo with 25 points and 14 rebounds, her first double-double. Senior Kyla Martin had her best game as a Bronco against UC Santa Barbara on Nov. 14. She set careerbests with 17 points and 11 assists without committing a turnover. At Pepperdine, she matched her 17 points. Morgan McGwire set a program record with nine blocks at Pepperdine and tied her career-high with 16 rebounds at Grand Canyon. Dru Toleafoa scored a career-best 17 against UC Santa Barbara and double her previous career-high with 10 rebounds at San Diego State. Sophomore Tamia Braggs also set a career-high with 13 points against Menlo. TOUGH D Santa Clara has had two of the strongest defensive performances in program history this season. On Dec. 14, the Broncos held San Diego State to just 34 points, less than half of the Aztecs average on the season. Santa Clara also allowed just a 22-percent mark from the field and 3-for-28 from beyond the arc. The 34 points allowed was the fewest allowed on the road by Santa Clara since an 88-31 win at Sacramento State on Dec. 15, 2000. It was the fewest points allowed against a Division I opponent since allowing 33 to UC Santa Barbara Nov. 20, 2014 Against Illinois-Chicago (Nov. 26), the Broncos held the Flames to just 36 points. In that game Santa Clara forced 21 UIC turnovers and picked up eight steals. Illinois- Chicago was held to just 25.9-percent shooting from the floor and 15.4-percent from beyond the arc. RAINING BUCKETS Santa Clara had one of the best offensive performances in program history against Menlo (Dec. 10) while also having one of its best rebounding days. Against the Oaks, the Broncos point total of 104 was the fourth most in program history and the most since a program-best 112 vs. Simpson on Nov. 4, 2015. Their 62 rebounds were the third most in program history and most since having 64 vs. Morgan State on Nov. 27,1994. THE TRANSFERS Santa Clara women s basketball has added a quartet of transfers to its roster. Erica Meyer, Joeseta Fatuesi, and Lauren Yearwood will all have to sit out the 2017-18 season due to NCAA rules while Charise Holloway is eligible. Meyer transferred from Providence after playing two years for the Friars. As a sophomore in 2016-17, she played in 23 games and made five starts. In 2015-16 Meyer appeared in 28 games and started once. She averaged 2.6 points per game, 2.3 rebounds per game, and 1.5 blocks per game as a freshman. Her 41 blocks led the team and tied the Providence freshman record set in 1990. At Wilton High School, Meyer led her team to an 81-19 overall record and won the Connecticut Class LL State Title as a senior. She was a three-time All-FCIAC honoree and at the conclusion of 2014-15 season, was named Freshman Alexus Brigham also had a big day for Santa Clara against Northwestern. Fatuesi played two seasons at Utah before transferring to Santa Clara. She appeared in all 33 games for Utah a season ago while averaging 4.4 ppg and 3.4 rpg and scoring in double-figures three times. As a freshman, Fatuesi ranked 16th in the Pac-12 with 6.3 rpg. That season she started 24 of the teams last 25 games. She had seven doubledigit points games and three 10-plus rebound outings. In high school, she was a two-time all-state selection that ranked 10th in the NorCalPreps.com Top 40. She was also named MaxPreps 2013-14 De Anza Division MVP and helped Wilcox High School qualify for the state tournament during senior season with 23-5 record. Yearwood was part of Oregon s Elite 8 team last season as a sophomore. She appeared in 20 games and made two starts in 2016-17 while appearing in the Sweet 16 and Elite 8. As a freshman, she appeared in 26 games and saw time in the WNIT. Yearwood also has international experience playing on the U15, U16, U17 and U19 Canadian National teams in FIBA competitions. With the U19 team in the summer of 2015, she averaged 8.3 points, 7.6 rebounds and 1.9 assists at the tournament while shooting 56.4 percent from the field. She led Oak Bay High School to a 2013 British Columbia AAA Silver Medal, falling just short in the championship game and earned first team all-tournament honors. Holloway comes to Santa Clara from Arizona. Last year she played in just 15 games due to injury but scored 6.3 ppg and knocked down 17 3-pointers to place third on the team. Her freshman year she played in 28 games and started five while averaging 6.6 ppg and 3.2 rpg. ern California Division 1 Player of the Year and was team captain and MVP as a senior. THE FUTURE The Broncos will welcome Lexi Pritchard and Lindsey VanAllen to the roster for the 2018-19 season. Pritchard was her team s MVP as a junior and a Second Team All-Conference selection as a junior and sophomore while taking home honorable mention her freshman season. In the classroom, Pritchard was on the honor roll during her freshman and junior years. Pritchard comes has an athletic lineage. Her father Terry was a football player at Oklahoma and her mother Melissa was a gymnast for the Sooners. Her brother Payton is a sophomore on the Oregon basketball team and her aunt Lisa Griffith played basketball at Arizona. She plans to major in business and is interested in sales and marketing. She loves the opportunity provided in the Bay Area. In her free time, she enjoys hanging out with friends and watching Netflix. VanAllen was a team captain during her junior and sophomore campaigns and is again this season as a senior. She is a three-time All-Region honoree and earned first team nods as a junior and sophomore and was selected to the second team as a freshman. As a junior, VanAllen averaged 17.8 points per game, 3.3 assists per game, 3.3 steals per game, 2.7 rebounds per game, and 0.8 blocks per game. Her team went 31-1 and was the 5A/Division 2 State champions. During that season, VanAllen was the Max Preps National Player of the Week. In each of her first three years in high school, VanAllen was a member of the National Honor Society and a Golden Scholar recipient. She plans to major in business and wants to become a lawyer. She enjoys hanging out with friends and hiking. At St. Mary s High School Holloway earned a starting spot all four years. She was All-Conference, All-City, and All-State each year of high school and was nominated for Miss Basketball California.
