Morris (1-1, 1.20 ERA) Tuesday, June 17, 2014 7:05 PM Victory Field, Indianapolis, IN Game #71 of 144 Broadcast: WDUN.com / GwinnettBraves.com Tonight s Game: The Gwinnett Braves continue an eight-game road trip (1-3 at LOU, 0-2 at IND) tonight with game three of a four-game series vs. the Indianapolis Indians (Pittsburgh Pirates). After going 25-18 (1 st in IL South) over their first 43 games, the G-Braves are 9-18 in their last 27 games. At 34-36, Gwinnett is two games under.500 for the first time since 4/13 (4-6 record after a 3-1 loss to Durham) the G-Braves have not been three games under.500 this season. GWN trails Durham (43-30) by a season-high 7.5 games for first place in the IL South Division. GWN is tied for fourth in the IL Wild Card standings, trailing ROC/SYR (both 40-30) by 6.0 games. With a win tonight, the G-Braves would snap a seven-game losing streak at Victory Field. The club hasn t won at the home of the Indianapolis Indians since 7/18/12 (6-4 win). G-Braves Blanked in Game 2: Indianapolis RHP Casey Sadler (W, 7-1) and three relievers combined on a seven-hit shutout last night as the Indians defeated the G-Braves 3-0 at Victory Field. After Sadler threw 5.0 scoreless frames, RHP Tyler Waldron (H, 3), former Gwinnett RHP Wirfin Obispo (H, 9) and LHP Andy Oliver (S, 7) added 4.0 scoreless IP to finish the game. RHP Gus Schlosser (L, 3-3) yielded three runs over 5.2 IP for the G-Braves. Sadler helped his own cause with an RBI groundout scoring Brent Morel in the second inning, giving the Indians the only run they d need. Chris McGuiness added an RBI double and scored on a double-play grounder off the bat of Morel in the sixth, extending the lead to 3-0. LHP Ryan Buchter and RHP Jorge Reyes worked 2.1 scoreless IP in relief of Schlosser, but the G-Braves mustered no comeback. Brandon Boggs (2-for-4) had two of Gwinnett s seven hits, while Mark Hamilton (1-for-3, 2B) had the club s only extra-base hit. Schlosser (5.2 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 5 BB, 3 SO, 102 pitches, 61 strikes) issued a season-high five walks in the loss, the most allowed by a Gwinnett starting pitcher this season. Steve Lerud notched a pinch-hit single in the seventh, raising his average to.750 (3-for-4, RBI) as a pinch-hitter this year. Gwinnett pinch-hitters are batting.300 (9-for-30, 3 RBI) in 2014. Scoring Drought: After being shut out just once in their first 50 games, Gwinnett has suffered five shutout losses in their last 20 games. The shutouts include 5/28 at Pawtucket (3-0), 5/30 at Rochester (7-0), 6/5 vs. Columbus (6-0), 6/14 at Louisville (1-0) and 6/16 at Indianapolis (3-0). GWN posted a 4-1 shutout record through their first 50 games, but are now 4-6 (.400, 11 th in IL). GWN led the IL in team batting average (.274) and OPS (.745) and ranked third in runs scored (242) as of 5/27. In 20 games since, the offense has combined to hit.234 (150-for-642) with 34 extra-base hits and 50 runs scored (6-14 record, outscored 83-50). That stretch has dropped the club to fifth in the IL in team batting average (.263) and 10 th in both OPS (.709) and runs (292). Getting Defensive: The Gwinnett defense has yet to commit an error in six games on this road trip the six-game errorless streak is the club s longest this season. The team s last errors occurred on 6/10 vs. Rochester, when CF Tyler Pastornicky (throwing) and LF Jose Constanza (fielding) each committed their first errors of the year in a 7-4 loss to the Red Wings. Streak Ends for Bethancourt: C Christian Bethancourt saw his 12-game hitting streak snapped last night as he went 0-for-4 with a strikeout. He batted.383 (18-for-47, 3 2B, 2 R, 6 RBI) on the streak dating back to 6/2 at Rochester, his longest hitting streak of the season. His 12-game streak is tied with former 1B Ernesto Mejia (12 games, 4/12 to 4/24) for second longest on the club this year. OF Joey Terdoslavich leads with a 14-game streak (4/20 to 5/4). Bethancourt has improved offensively each month after batting.203 (13-for-64, 3 XBH, 6 RBI) in April and.271 (23-for-85, 8 XBH, 17 RBI) in May, he s batting.346 (18-for-52, 3 XBH, 6 RBI) in June. Gosselin Among Leaders: Despite going 0-for-2 last night, INF Phil Gosselin remains sixth in the International League in batting (.317) entering play. He also ranks among IL offensive leaders in hits (3 rd, 79), total bases (9 th, 104), doubles (T-9 th, 16) and triples (T-10 th, 3).
