BY THE NUMBERS 9 Nine underclassmen are set to don the Red and White in 2016-17, Radford ranks fourth in youngest rosters in the Big South. 4 Head coach Mike McGuire, the 2014-15 Big South Coach of the Year, enters his fourth season at the helm of the Highlanders. 2 George Mason is the first of two Atlantic 10 Conference opponents the Highlanders will face this season. Radford visits Davidson on Nov. 19. TEAM NOTES HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS The Highlanders look to build off one of the best defensive seasons in program history after holding opponents to 53.3 points per game. Radford ranked in the top 25 in six defensive categories a season ago. McGuire s squad ranked fifth in field-goal percentage defense with opponents shooting a mere 33.3 percent from the field. In the other five categories; Radford ranked 14th in scoring defense (53.3), 15th in 3-point field goal defense (26.7), 16th in blocked shots per game (5.6), 21st in rebound margin (8.1) and 22nd in blocked shots (173). A dominate force last year, preseason Big South first teamer Janayla White returns in the paint for the Highlanders. White was the only player in the Big South to average a double-double in 2015-16. The Virginia Beach, Va. native poured in 11.9 points per game and grabbed 10.0 rebounds per game. White enters the season with 108 career blocks, ranking sixth in program history. Was the top shot blocker in 18 games, recording at least three blocks nine times. Joining White as the only Highlander returning in double-figures, Jayda Worthy averaged 10.3 points per game. Worthy is one of the best passing forwards in the Big South. A season ago, she averaged 2.6 dimes per contest, leading the team in 15 games. Big South All-Freshman team honoree Lydia Rivers gives the Highlanders additional depth in the post as the Kinston, N.C. native ranked second on the team with 8.1 rebounds per game last season. Rivers pulled down at least 10 rebounds on 10 different occasions. Radford sports eight guards on the roster, returner point guard Jen Falconer, who appeared in the first nine games of the season before having her season cut short due to a knee injury. Falconer received a medical redshirt after averaging 3.8 assists per game, the most by a Highlander in a single-season since 2011-12. Redshirt sophomores Brittany Allen and Claudia Quevedo return for their redshirt sophomore seasons after missing the 2015-16 season. In her freshman campaign, Quevedo averaged 4.3 points per game and shot 84-percent from the charity stripe. In 19 contests last season, Alexis Jackson averaged 5.5 points per game in 25.7 minutes a contest. In addition to 11 returners, Radford welcomes two newcomers in freshmen Khiana Johnson and Charnissa Chillers. SCOUTING GEORGE MASON RU will look to build upon the success of the 2014-15 season, which ended with the Highlanders third WNIT appearance in program history. The Patriots return seven letterwinners from their 2015-16 campaign, where they finished ninth in the Atlantic 10 Conference regular-season standings. George Mason s lineup will be bolstered by the addition of eight newcomers, including five freshmen. The Patriots roster is highlighted by six transfers. George Mason was picked to finish 11th in the A-10 preseason coaches poll for the second straight year. Redshirt senior Kara Wright comes in as the team s top returning scorer after averaging 10.7 points a season ago. Fellow redshirt senior Tiffany Padgett is back as the team s top returning rebounder after averaging 5.8 boards in addition to 7.4 points a game. The Patriots will have to replace three-time A-10 All-Conference honoree Taylor Brown, who led the team with 15.0 points per game, 3.3 assists per game and 44 made 3-pointers. Brown graduated as George Mason s second leading scorer with 1,693 points in only three seasons. In addition to replacing Brown, George Mason will rely on Padgett to replace the scoring and rebounding role of Kristi Mokube. In 2015-16, Mokube averaged 11.4 points and 6.2 rebounds a game. George Mason was 7-5 at home last season and 2-12 on the road. ADIÓS AISHA Radford will need to fill the void left by 2016 graduate Aisha Foy, a two-time Big South Conference honoree. A threat from behind the 3-point line, Foy made 129,... ranking fifth all-time. Foy finished her career with a.351 3-point field goal percentage, ranking fifth in program history. She led the Highlanders in scoring during the 2015-16 season, averaging 12.2 points per game. Appearing in 113 games with earning 82 starts, Foy finished her career with 955 points. Named to the Women s Basketball Coaches Association s So You Want to be a Coach program. MIKE MCGUIRE Head Coach :: Fourth Season at Radford @coachmcguire COACH MCGUIRE: INSIDE THE NUMBERS @mamcguire77 Radford University officials introduced Mike McGuire on Wednesday, April 24, 2013 as the Highlanders seventh NCAA head women s basketball coach in program history. Widely recognized as one of the up-and-coming head coaches in the country, McGuire has quickly laid a solid foundation for the program moving forward. Despite a 2015-16 season ravaged by injuries, McGuire steered Radford to its most wins (18) since the 2007-08 season. The Highlanders, who tied for third in the Big South regular-season standings, advanced to the semifinals of the Big South tournament for the first time since 2013. Defense was the cornerstone of Radford s success. The Highlanders concluded the season ranked fifth in the nation in field-goal percentage defense (.333), 14th in scoring defense (53.3) and 16th in blocks per game (5.6). Individually, two Radford players (Janayla White and Aisha Foy) were named to the All-Big South first team for the first time since 1992-93. In just his second season at the helm (2014-15), McGuire guided the Highlanders to their third WNIT in school history. Radford, which finished with a 17-14 overall record, including a 14-6 Big South ledger, finished tied for second in the Big South regular-season standings. It was the Highlanders highest finish in the conference standings since 2010-11. McGuire s work did not go unnoticed as the conference s 11 head coaches selected him Big South Coach of the Year, marking the sixth head coach in program history to earn the accolade. He is also the women s basketball head coach representative from the Big South Conference on the NCAA Regional Advisory Committee, which is a three-year commitment. Before Radford, McGuire spent 2008-13 as an assistant coach at the University of Richmond where he helped lead the Spiders to five straight postseason berths and a 101-60 overall record. For the second consecutive season in 2012-13, Florida Basketball Magazine named McGuire one of the top assistant coaches in the nation, and at the conclusion of the 2011-12 season, National Basketball Insider recognized him as one of the Top-14 Mid-Major assistant coaches in the country. Radford cut a 17-point deficit to six late in the third quarter, however, the Highlanders were unable to complete the comeback in falling to No. 2 seed Liberty, 51-41, Saturday evening in the semifinals of the 2016 Big South Women s Basketball Championship inside Kimmel Arena. After being held to a season-low 11 points in the first half and seeing Liberty increase its lead to as many as 17, the third-seeded Highlanders stormed back behind a 15-4 run to close the gap to six following Sydney Nunley s and-one with six seconds to go in the third quarter. With momentum on its side, Radford looked poised to head to the fourth quarter on a high note. However, the Lady Flames Jaymee Fisher-Davis collected a pass from Sadalia Ellis and swished home a 3-pointer from the right wing as time expired to put Liberty ahead by nine (37-28) heading into the final stanza. RU could get no closer than seven over the remaining 10 minutes of the game, ending the Highlanders incredible season with the most wins (18) since the 2007-08 campaign. For the second straight game, Jayda Worthy led Radford in scoring with 10 points. She added seven rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block. Lydia Rivers (11) and Janayla White (10) pulled down double-digit rebounds, while Destinee Walker racked up a season-high five steals. Liberty s strong start was a result of the Lady Flames cleaning up the offensive glass. Sixteen of their 30 rebounds in the first half were on the offensive end. They were able to visit the free-throw line 15 more times than the Highlanders, gaining an additional nine points from the charity stripe. Fisher-Davis, who knocked down 3 of 6 from beyond the arc, led all scorers with 11 points off the bench for Liberty. Ellis and Catherine Kearney contributed 10 points apiece. The future is bright for Radford as 11 Highlanders are set to return for the 2016-17 campaign, which will be McGuire s fourth season as head coach of the program.
