From the Committee Chair Dear Members, Please turn your attention to another exciting squash season inside the walls of The Philadelphia Cricket Club! As the oldest, and arguably finest, family-oriented private club in the country, PCC is proud to offer an incredible array of squash programming steeped in tradition and sportsmanship, orchestrated by a world-class staff, and delivered in one of the most modern squash facilities on earth. Whether you re considering taking your first lesson or dusting off your racquets and shoes after years of play, PCC Squash has something for you! From instructional lessons to casual pick-up games, morning clinics to evening leagues, and social and competitive events that are the talk of the town, PCC offers opportunities for individuals and families, women and men, adults and juniors, singles and doubles players to engage in the great sport of squash. To that end, your PCC Squash Committee and professional staff continue to develop the programs, technologies, metrics and services that provide you, our fellow members, with the finest and most enjoyable squash experience anywhere. Of special note this season, PCC is proud to partner with US Squash and the Philadelphia Squash Racquets Association to bring you three of the most prestigious tournaments in the country: 2017 U.S. Open Squash Championships - 1st & 2nd Round Qualifiers (October 5 & 6, 2017) presented by Macquarie Investment Management 2018 U.S. High School Team Squash Championships (February 2-4, 2018) 2018 U.S. National Squash Championships (March 9-11, 2018) S.L. Green U.S. Men s Closed, U.S. Women s Closed, U.S. Open Age Group Masters So, get out those racquets and turn to this guide (and the PCC website) as a resource for all things squash during the 2017-2018 season. As always, we encourage you to contact our incredible Director of Squash, Julieanne Harris, or her staff, or any of your volunteer committee members to find a game, make a suggestion, and get involved. Warm Regards, Stephen S. Gregg Squash Committee Chair stevegregg@squashsmarts.org 3

Rules and Information Rules, Privileges, & Guests The rules implemented for the squash facilities are designed to ensure that all members have an enjoyable experience. Members of either Full, Golf-in-Waiting, or Intermediate membership levels can reserve courts and use the squash facility. Members must register and accompany their guests. A non-member may play squash as a guest at PCC on four occasions per calendar year. House members may pay guest fees and play up to four times during the calendar year. Guests, as well as members, are asked to obey Club rules regarding all-white attire, eye protection, non-marking shoes and player conduct. Facility Hours & Reservations The squash courts open at 6:00 am and close at 10:30 pm. Courts can be reserved online at philacricket.com. If you have difficulty reserving a court online, the squash or tennis pro shop attendant will be happy to assist you. Full, Golf-in-Waiting, and Intermediate members can reserve courts up to seven days in advance. Members are not permitted to reserve a court consecutively or to reserve different courts back-to-back in order to increase playing time. Please claim your reserved court within 10 minutes of start time. There should be two names signed up for every singles court and four for every doubles court. You may sign up to practice by yourself without a partner before 5:15 pm or after 8:15 pm. However, during the primetime period of 5:15 pm - 8:15 pm, you must have a playing partner. cancelled match. Members must sign in guests at the pro shop before play commences. The guest fee is $15 and applies to each player who is not a Full, Golf-in-Waiting, or Intermediate PCC member. White Attire & Eye Protection The Philadelphia Cricket Club asks that all players adhere to the allwhite attire rule. Clothing may have up to 10% color. All players must wear white clothing or they will be asked to leave the court until they comply with the rule. Players must wear non-marking squash or tennis shoes. Black soles or other soles that leave marks are not permitted and running shoes are strictly prohibited. For the safety of the players, protective eyewear is mandatory on court for adult and junior players. Multiple infractions of the white attire and protective eyewear rules may result in loss of privileges. Sportsmanship For your enjoyment of the game, the Club promotes a culture of good sportsmanship. It is very important that all players comport themselves in a responsible and sportsmanlike manner, whether they are playing competitive or social squash at The Philadelphia Cricket Club or at another facility. Poor sportsmanship is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Coaches are authorized to take whatever measures are required under the circumstances to make sure that all PCC players behavior is beyond reproach. Players, and the parents of junior players, should always be respectful of opponents, referees, and spectators. Court Cancellation & Guest Policy If you need to cancel a squash court reservation, please contact the pro shop to cancel it as early as possible so other members have the ability to reserve the court. League captains are responsible for cancelling team courts by calling the pro shop by 4:00 pm the day of the 5 Mobile Phone Usage The use of mobile phones is prohibited in the Club s squash facilities if you are within earshot of others. To receive or make calls, please take your phone outside.

Getting Involved in the Squash Program Singles squash is attractive to many people because of the vigorous workout it provides. Players can get a good workout in only 45 minutes. Doubles is equally enjoyable and appealing to all ages due to the social, team-oriented nature of the game. Squash is simple to learn. There is one basic grip and one spin applied to the ball. Putting the ball in play is easy and a beginner can soon serve as effectively as an expert. In short order, two novices can rally, learn the essential rules, and play real games. Moreover, because the basic swing is not technically demanding, one can become an accomplished squash player without taking up the game early in life. At The Philadelphia Cricket Club, players learn the game through clinics, private lessons and social play. The Club has activities for players of all ages and levels of play. So whether you are looking for informal, low-pressure social play or are determined to take your game to the next level, PCC has programming for your needs. To tour the Squash Facility and discuss your squash needs, please see PCC s Director of Squash, Julieanne Harris. Her office is at the PCC Squash Facility. Please contact Julieanne at PCC at 215-247-6001 ext. 430, by email at pcsquash@philacricket.com or by cell phone at 215-877-3250. Training Groups for Tournament Competitors Tournament Training Groups Red, Black, Yellow and Green September through April By Invitation The Club provides afternoon and evening training for highly motivated and committed junior tournament players. Juniors who have exhibited high participation in competitive play, shown good sportsmanship and maturity, practiced conscientiously, and maintained a record of achievement will be invited to participate. Principal factors in squad assignment are US Squash player rankings, the individual s past success in attending and contributing to a training group, the ability of a player to do the drills and adapt to the conditions of a particular squad, and the player s willingness to follow instructions, perform with maximum effort, and accept coaching advice. Players are placed in one of three groups: Red, Black, Green or Yellow. Participants will play Challenge Ladder matches as directed by the squad leader. Results from the challenge matches along with attendance and attitude will determine if a player should be moved up or down a squad group for the following month of training. Our aim is to place squad participants in a training environment that will consistently motivate them to train harder and to improve. Tournament Group Training Schedule Red Group Black Group Yellow & Green Groups $26 per 75 minute session $31 per 90 minute session $42 per 120 minute session Junior Club Tournaments Junior Singles Championships Beginning October 15, 2017 Monday & Wednesday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday & Friday 7:00-9:00pm 7:00-9:00pm 6:00-7:15pm 5:15-6:45pm Participants must be Squash Privilege Members at PCC.
