Division of Institutional Advancement Alumni House University of Maryland Eastern Shore Princess Anne, Maryland 21853 June 27, 2008 Dear Friend of UMES: The newly created Professional Golf Management (PGM) Program at UMES is one of the distinctive programs that is poised to provide our students with unmatched potential in the hospitality industry as directors of golf for major resorts, facilities and merchandisers. Further still, our recently accredited Professional Golf Management program has made an historical impact on the entire golf industry as we are the first and only Historically Black University with a PGM program certified by the PGA. The Art Shell Celebrity Golf Classic will be held on Wednesday, September 17, 2008 at GlenRiddle Golf Club, 11701 Gray s Corner in Berlin, Maryland 21811 and will feature a pairing party on the UMES campus the evening of September 16 th and a post-tournament celebration at Ruth s Chris Steak House after the tournament on the 17 th. Funds raised from this event will be managed by the University System of Maryland Foundation, Inc. to support the students who pursue the PGM curriculum by providing student scholarships and offsetting program operation costs. Please review the enclosed sponsorship opportunities and consider becoming a PGM program sponsor. Your support will not only make this event successful, but most importantly, will help UMES continue its commitment to its regional investment in the Lower Eastern Shore while providing distinctive opportunities for our students and community. If you should have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Kimberly Conway Dumpson, Esquire, Chair of the Art Shell Celebrity Golf Classic Sponsorship Committee at (410) 651-7686. Thank you in advance for your consideration and support. Sincerely, Thelma B. Thompson, Ph. D. President Art Shell Founder Midgett S. Opportunity. The newly created Professional Golf Management (PGM) Program at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) has made an historical impact on the entire golf industry. As the first and only Historically Black University with a PGM program certified by the Professional Golfers Association of America, UMES is a pioneer in the effort to introduce more minorities and women to the exciting and prosperous world of golf. Distinction. The mission of the UMES PGM program is to create PGA of America members who will pursue careers in the golf industry as directors of golf for major resorts, facilities, and merchandisers. In particular, the UMES PGM program will target the shortage of minorities and women among PGA of America members. Investment. The UMES Professional Golf Management program was formally certified by the PGA of America in January 2008 and will enroll its first cohort of 25 to 30 students this fall. Funds raised from this tournament will support the students who pursue the PGM curriculum and offset program operation costs. To implement such a rigorous curriculum, there are extra expenses that many students cannot afford on their own. Over the 4½ years of this demanding program, the additional costs in tuition, curriculum materials, membership fees, equipment, travel, and facilities are currently estimated to exceed normal tuition, room, and board expenses by an additional $9,000 per student.
