It is antiipated that during the festival, teahers will develop new skills and ideas to inspire future generations of young people. The festival elebrates the talent of Newham s young people and reognises the valuable skills and ontribution that ulture, the arts and sport make to our lives and the eonomy. In the lead-up to this years festival two young representatives from every Newham shool attended a pledge signing event overlooking the Olympi Park. On behalf of their shool, they signed their support to the Olympi and Paralympi values of friendship, exellene, respet, determination, inspiration, ourage and equality. Newham s Children and Young People s Servie thank the organisations that have worked alongside our eduators, providers and young people to develop the high quality ontent of the festival. Without their ontinued support and partnership muh of this work would not be possible. We do hope that you will take the time to enjoy and visit some of the events advertised in this programme. Newham Festival of Culture, the Arts and Sport 2009 VerbalEyes: Finding A Voie Through Art Saturday 6 June, all day Tate Britain VerbalEyes is Tate Britain s shools outreah projet exploring visual and verbal literay with ontemporary pratitioners using the Tate olletion. VerbalEyes worked with over 400 hildren and their teahers from six primary and seondary shools in the London boroughs of Newham and Westminster. Two lasses from eah shool worked with artists over the ourse of two weeks. The final artworks from all the projets are displayed in a speial VerbalEyes Exhibition at Tate Britain, whih is launhed with a elebratory family day. In Training Tuesday 9 June, 7pm The Stratford Rex Dane Colletion Wednesday 3 June, 7pm Stratford Cirus Welome to the eleventh Dane Colletion, a elebratory evening of outstanding work produed by NewVI s dane teahers and students inluding a dynami performane for the stage and film in a range of explosive dane styles. Tikets 4 and 2 onessionary. The New London Orhestra has teamed up with sports groups aross Newham, inspiring them to reate team anthems. When Dane Meets Wednesday 10 June, 7pm Stratford Cirus What happens when dane meets? Shools from aross Newham elebrate their dane ventures with East London Dane in this showase exploring dane ollaborations with other art forms and styles. A diverse night from some of tomorrow s brightest daners. Cumberland Shool Sports Partnership (SSP) Outdoor Athletis Competition Tuesday 9 June, 12.30pm Newham Leisure Centre A trak and field athletis ompetition for pupils in Years 4 and 6. Shools in the Cumberland SSP will ompete. Medals and trophies will be awarded. Langdon SSP Rounders Tournament Wednesday 10 June, 1pm Langdon Shool A tournament for pupils in Years 5 and 6 to use their skills and tatis to ompete in rounders. Shools in the Langdon SSP will ompete. A trophy and medals will be awarded.
Turn, Turn, Return Year 9 G&T Thursday 11 June, 7pm Stratford Cirus Thirty Year 9 gifted and talented drama students from 15 seondary shools will perform five devised piees. They reeived three days of intensive training with theatre pratitioners in preparation for this performane. 91 Prinelet Street Tuesday 16 to Thursday 18 June, 7pm Stratford Cirus Approximately 350 Year 5 students have been working together to explore stories around immigration. They have researhed four groups of people, who for different reasons have settled in the East End of London. The students have used real stories and inidents to inform their own interpretation of events. The performanes are a result of nine months of hard work by art pratitioners, teahers and young people. Cheer and Dane Event Wednesday 17 June, 10am ExCeL London Led by London Cheerleading Aademy, this event for all will give heer and dane squads a hane to perform their routines and see the spetaular work of heerleaders aross the borough. Sing Up, Sing Out! Wednesday 24 June, 7pm Royal Festival Hall Come along and witness a glorious musial extravaganza performed by 500 members of Newham s Young People s Chorus. Now in its fourth suessful year this ever expanding hoir enompassing students from 25 Newham shools ontinues to grow from voal strength to voal strength. Their performane will inlude the musi of Handel, Elton John, Heather Small, folk, gospel and muh, muh more. With guest hoirs and young soloists from aross the borough of Newham joining in, this onert promises to lift your spirits and make your heart sing! Langdon SSP Tops Festival Friday 26 June, 1pm Langdon Shool A urriulum-based sporting festival for students in Years 3 and 4. Sports leaders from Langdon Shool will organise and offiiate. Partiipating students will be issued with a ertifiate. We All Come From Somewhere Else Wednesday 24 June and Thursday 25 June, 7pm Stratford Cirus An evening of ten minute theatre piees, presented and performed by different Newham seondary shools, and one minute films, performed by members of Theatre Royal Stratford East Youth Theatre. All piees are inspired by personal and soial history or hange and transition in Newham over the enturies. A elebration not only of the quality of Key Stage 3 Drama in the borough but also of the possibilities offered by the new Creative and Media Diploma Course.
The Opening Ceremony Tuesday 30 June, 9.30am Newham Leisure Centre and Cumberland Shool Celebrating the offiial launh of the festival and the new sports faility at Newham Leisure Centre, this event will inlude dane, heerleading, musi and a parade - altogether a spetaular display. Speehes of welome and a revival of the pledge to the Olympi and Paralympis values will omplete the show. Our honoured guests will then be able to see an extravaganza of sport involving primary aged hildren from aross the borough in a range of sports and ativities. Medals and trophies will be awarded. Students taking part in the Triple A projet, as part of the new Creative and Media Diploma, will perform on stilts in their own striking ostume designs. Eastside Stories Friday 3 July, doors 7pm, show 8pm Stratford Cirus An urban musial showase organised by the students from DV8 s Musi Industry Projet. In the past, the likes of Chipmunk and Bashy have stepped on stage to represent. This show promises top names and breakthrough performanes. Year 7 and 8 Games Wednesday 1 July, 10.30am Newham Leisure Centre and Cumberland Shool An exiting multi-sport ompetition for students in Years 7 and 8 from aross the borough. This will be a ulmination of weeks of preparation by oahes, teahers and athletes. Medals and trophies will be awarded. Share It! Thursday 2 July, 7pm Stratford Cirus A showase of high level musi outomes from shools aross Newham. Jazz It! Saturday 4 July, 7pm Stratford Cirus The ever-popular jazz night returns to the festival featuring the group Moderate Groove and jazz ensembles from the Newham Aademy of Musi and students from seondary shools aross Newham. An evening to spend spotting the stars of the future.

Drawing Together Opening Tuesday 7 July, 5.30pm exhibition runs until Friday 17 July, 3.30pm University of East London This inspirational art exhibition showases the artwork of Newham s promising young artists. It inludes examples of urriulum projets that have been developed in onjuntion with the Tate Gallery and other arts organisations. This year the opening will inlude the launh of the OFSTED subjet report Drawing Together. All are welome to the opening no booking is neessary. Media Showase Wednesday 8 July, 6pm opening for 7pm sreening Stratford Cirus An eleti olletion of digital media work reated by Newham s young people. The exhibition will inlude moving image, multimedia design and animation work by NewVI students from a range of study programmes as well as other work by young people in the borough.
Tomorrow s Musiians Tonight (TMT) Thursday 9 July, 7pm Stratford Cirus This eagerly-awaited seond appearane of TMT will bring together Newham shools with FourSight, the Newham Aademy of Musi s ensemble-in-residene. A wide variety of musi will be performed, some reated espeially for the evening and some fresh from the fingers of the Aademy s Wider Opportunities programme. The Mayor s Newham Show Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 July, all day Central Park Show-goers will enjoy some highlights from the festival.
