GLENORCHY CITY TENNIS CLUB PO Box 213, Glenorchy 7010 Phone: 0362 498213 www.glenorchytennis.com.au October 2010 Newsletter Presidents Report Alan Walker The 30 th Anniversary was a great success with 73 people present. This enabled me to talk with many of the inaugural members who I have not seen for a long time and even longer since I played tennis against them. This day proved to be a very enjoyable day. I would like to thank Elva Hutchinson for her hard work in organising this day and to all the current members who also helped to make this an occasion to remember. On Sunday the 10 th we held a come and try day. At this early stage, this would appear to be very successful. On Monday 11 October, Sally Nus had 18 juniors turn up. Fortunately some other adults were on hand to help with keeping them occupied. I imagine this would be the largest turn out of juniors on one night since Sally has been our junior convenor. Hopefully we can keep these juniors coming along and maybe they might encourage their friends to join them. I heard that in the 80 s our club had to close junior memberships. Hopefully we can look forward to our number of juniors increasing so that our club can again progress in areas other than just the Shoreline AYC night pennant. A reminder to all club members, to keep 26-28 November free so that you can play in the Glenorchy Open Tournament. It would be to our club s advantage if we can encourage our AYC opponents to participate in the graded events. Thank you to Greg McShane for completing the new surface to courts 3 and 4 in a timely manner, in weather conditions that were not favourable to him. The courts look wonderful and play very well. Important Dates 26 28 November Glenorchy Open Tournament

Page 2 Club Captains Report Helen Souter & John Fletcher Although Courts 3 & 4 were not resurfaced before the commencement of AYC Pennant, there has not been too many issues at the start of pennant season. With the courts completed now, it is pleasing to hear that members have been pleasantly surprised how well the courts have played with the Club having 6 courts available for AYC. It was great to have 3 Glenorchy teams playing on a particular night last week. There will be sheets on the notice board for members who are wishing to participate in the Summer AYC Pennant that will commence in early February next year. Please remember that the format will be the same as the pennant running before Christmas 10 week roster and 2 week final series. Also, we need to be aware of any particular night that you cannot play. Any requests, we will try to accommodate. Members wishing to play with husbands/wives, partners (or not), let us know. We will be conducting another social BBQ on Saturday December 11 with play commencing at 4pm and the BBQ to follow. Junior Report Sally Nus At social tennis last Monday night I had 18 juniors. It was fantastic. This was as a result of the come and try day so let s hope that they all continue to come along. Thank you to Jim McKellar who helped me out with them all. Third Term Pennant is up and running and we have played 1 game so far. Last weeks game was called off due to the wet weather. Just a reminder about Monday night social tennis the times are 4:15pm to 6:00pm. Next Meeting Our next committee meeting is on Sunday November 14 at 4pm at the Clubhouse. Midweek Ladies Elizabeth Wuttke Spring Pennant The Spring Pennant has commenced and we have players in St Thereses Diamonds, Rosny Gemini, Rosny Capricorns, Sunshine Sisters and Glenorchy. LADDER Division 1 Domain Gold 19/198 Domain Rural 12/154 Geilston Bay Hearts 9/130 St Thereses Diamonds 8/122 Division 2 Taroona Twilights 15/168 Rosny Gemini 13/166 Kingston Miracles 11/165 Sorell 9/164 Division 3 Geilston Bay Diamonds 16/188 St Thereses Opals 14/166 Rosny Capricorns 11/145 Richmond Rafters 11/141 Rosny Aquarius 8/135 Division 4 New Norfolk 20/201 Kingston Chanel 18/181 Kingston Opium 16/179 Geilston Bay Clubs 12/190 Sunshine Sisters 11/132 Richmond Stosurs 9/126 Glenorchy 8/141 Geilston Bay Spades 2/112 Come & Try Day A come and try day was organised by Tennis Tasmania for anyone to try a game of tennis. Thank you to everyone who assisted on the day and met a number of potential members and played some games with them. Alan and Jim did a great job entertaining a number of juniors. We hope some of these families decide to join up with the Club.

Page 3 30 year reunion Elva Hutchinson With the help of Norma Hallam we sent out invitations to approx. 150 people and received replies to approx. 50, of which most turned up on the day. We received a lot of apologies, with special mention from those who really wanted to come, but had previous engagements. There were approx. 20-22 current members giving a total of around 70 plus. A big thank you to Norma. The Club photograph albums were popular with earlier members especially Craig Tibballs. Some of our current members found them interesting. They are years and years behind. As the keeper of these books, I have stacks of photos over the years, a lot not labelled and dated one member suggested a working bee of folk who may be able to help, would be a good idea. A later project to look into. We had a book that everyone signed, apologies entered, and I will paste in history and the front page. This to be kept for future reference. A big thank you to all the members who provided food for afternoon tea, and as usual we had plenty. Lots of remarks were made by our visitors at the wonderful spread members did the Club proud and kept up our reputation with regards to our excellent hospitality. An extra big thank you for the ladies who helped in the kitchen Elizabeth W. Noreen N. Helen B. Helen Souter. (and any others I may have missed).also to Norma & Helen B. who helped meet and speak to guests. Thanks to my husband Bob and Alan W. for streamers and balloons they didn t bust many. The co-ordination of this event was a challenge and one I am pleased to have had the opportunity to do, especially when I received positive feedback from so many earlier members. Research on whereabouts of past members took time, and was very interesting. Especially reading the first 8 years of Newsletters and Minutes not all were available, and being part of those days, brought back some great memories. Glenorchy Open Tournament So far, everything is on track for another successful tournament. This will be the last newsletter with this years sponsors and next month will see our new sponsors featured. We wish to thank our previous sponsors for their support. This year, we welcome Anna Jakins on board as our new Tournament Director. If anyone wishes to join the committee, it s never too late. Please talk to us about how you can help. As usual, we will shortly have notices on the board asking for volunteers and assistance. This will be in the form of kitchen assistants across the weekend and the night of the dinner, BBQ cooks, bar workers and office workers. As well as this we would appreciate donations of food that can be used across the weekend fresh fruit and vegetables, salads, desserts etc, but also anything we can use or sell in the kitchen over the weekend. This includes homemade slices as well as eggs, ham, cheese, coffee, tea, sugar, sauce, foil, gladwrap, onions, potatoes, butter, bread. Please see the notices on the board and put your names down if you are able to assist. The idea of the tournament is to play tennis, so please think about entering. Entry forms are available from the Club house and if I ve remembered, there will be one included with this newsletter. Remember to encourage your AYC opponents to play as well. There are graded events and the entry for these events has been reduced this year. If they don t wish to play, maybe they could be tempted to buy raffle tickets instead. There are some nice prizes on offer and it may save you from buying the book. Don t forget to return them as soon as practical. Unwanted, unused rackets Thank you to whoever has brought some rackets to the Club. They arrived just in time for Come and Try Day and were very helpful.
