KS2 Threatened Species Trail This resource pack consists of both the Teacher Guide and the Student Booklet for the trail, so you will have everything you need. When you have printed the pages, fold in half to make A5 booklets. We recommend you look through the whole pack before you start, so you know what information to look for at each sign. 5 6 KS2 Threatened Species Trail TEACHER GUIDE 4 7 8 The Threatened Species Trail takes you and your pupils around the zoo, focusing on specific animals. Please encourage your pupils to look through the whole booklet before you start, so they know what information to look for at each sign.

Vulnerable: Giant anteater, Humboldt penguin 2. Endangered: Grevy s zebra, pygmy hippo 3. Extinct in the Wild: Partula snails, scimitar-horned oryx 8 species of partula snails are being bred at Marwell Zoo. Giving radio collars to wild Grevy s zebra helps us to track them, so we know which places they like to use and so the best areas to protect. The small icons can direct you to the correct part of the sign for each question. The letter for the mystery word is found here. The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species scale is found here and shows you the current status of the species (in red). The mystery word is: E C O S Y S T E M S Ideas for how you can help save threatened animals include: saving energy, recycling rubbish, cycling or walking to school, buying sustainably, wildlife gardening and feeding wild birds.

You can help these animals too! One way to help is by choosing food with this logo on at the supermarket. This logo means that the companies are making sure they leave enough fish in the sea for animals to eat too. Which trail animal is this most likely to help? There are some clues at the bottom to help you if you get stuck! Collect a letter from each Threatened Species sign around the zoo to spell out our mystery word... Remember: helping the environment helps animals too!

Marwell Wildlife is a charity that tries to help the animals on the Threatened Species Trail. How does this help? The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species sorts animals into groups depending on how threatened they are. Look out for this scale on the trail signs: Marwell has also helped reintroduce some scimitar-horned oryx back into protected parts of their natural habitat. Which country were they first returned to? Brazil Tunisia France Can you name one animal that is: 1. Vulnerable? 2. Endangered? 3. Extinct in the Wild? Did you know? The scimitar-horned oryx we have at Marwell usually breed very well. If you are lucky, you may be able to see some oryx calves in the paddock with their family!
