A Word From The Publisher April is here and so are the April showers. So far it has been a wet Skeet season. The first two shoots I participated in were wet and cold. Warmer days are here and with some luck maybe the rain will fall on Wednesdays. One can only hope. In this issue we have a report on the 11th Annual Junior Skeet Shooting Event. This shooting and gun safety clinic is hosted by Lafayette Skeet Academy on David and Mary Hebert s Farm near Kaplan, Louisiana. This year the event had a cosponsor, the Vermilion Chapter of Delta Waterfowl. Youngsters aged 6 to 18 were instructed in gun safety and how to shoot Skeet. We also have several have some articles on several Skeet shoots. All of these are from Louisiana. We would love to share reports from other states. If you would like to send us pictures and writeups about your club s Skeet shoots, please do. You do not have to be a trained journalist [fortunately]. A digital camera will take squad photos and a brief write-up Is not that hard to do. You can use your smart phone to take photos. We love showing our readers how much fun we are having. It is great [free] publicity for your club and will draw people to come shoot with you. Don t forget to check out the Flyers page on our website. If your club s flyers are not there, send them to me. We will post them for all to see. From Doug, Debbie and Skeeter at the Red Chute Gazette, we send to you our Best Wishes for a Healthy and Happy Easter. Don t eat to many Reese Peanut Butter Eggs! Until we meet again in these pages or on the Skeet field, I am wishing you 3 @ 8. Doug Frey Page 2

11th Annual Junior Skeet Shooting Event Sponsored by Lafaye e Skeet Academy / Vermilion Delta Waterfowl Saturday March 4, 2017 About 75 youth shooters aged 6 to 18 participated in the 11th Annual Junior Skeet Shooting Event held on David and Mary Hebert s Farm near Kaplan, Louisiana. There is no charge for this event which has been made possible by sponsorship money from the Briley Louisiana Open and the Vermilion Delta Waterfowl Chapter. Guns were available for participants who did not bring one. Shells were donated by Delta Waterfowl and Lafayette Skeet Academy, Inc., a non-profit organization created by local shooters to promote gun safety and Skeet shooting. They also provided a BB Gun Range for younger children. Kids were encouraged to bring a duck call to participate in a duck calling workshop. This program always starts with safety instruction from Tom Hebert. In addition to explaining gun safety and sharing real life accounts of tragic events where good safety practices were not followed, Tom demonstrated proper gun handling techniques and he demonstrated the power of a shotgun by shooting cabbages and bottles of soda. After that, the participants were called to their squads to participate in shooting Skeet targets for some hands on instruction. Following are some photos taken by Roland Thibodeaux and me to show how much fun was had and some of the volunteers who helped put this event on. Doug Frey Page 9

Crawfish Étouffée Open The Skeet season in Louisiana kicked off with the 11th Annual Junior Skeet Event on March 4, followed by the Crawfish Étouffée Open on Sunday, March 5, at David and Mary Hebert s Farm near Kaplan, Louisiana. Thirty Five shooters participated in the 200 target 12 Gauge Marathon. The Champion was Michael Vickers who posted two 99 s for a 198. David Hebert took Runner-Up with 100 plus 97 for a 197. David s 100 was the only one shot. Randi Corley took Third with a 194. Here are the scores: Doug Frey Page 16

TBMGC 20 Gauge Marathon The skeet season at Toby Bancroft Memorial Gun Club kicked off with a 20 gauge marathon. Eleven Skeet shooters enjoyed the company of 22 Trap shooters (simultaneous meet.) Significant falling condensate and constant clouds kept the sun from spoiling the shoot with warmth and brightness. Noticeably cool and frequent stiff breezes kept targets from being overly predictable. My goal of not having a shoot in unbearably hot weather was more than fully attained. Participants seemed to enjoy each other and the shoot. The referees were pleasant, competent, and highly attractive. No complaints were heard from or made to the shoot committee. We and the trap shooters ate well. Jean Schodlatz made two large trays of marvelous brownies which disappeared before I could get my second and third--there was a hint of the odor of goat about the empty trays; thus, I think I know the culprits. Potato salad and baked beans were provided by Beverly Walker. Karen Haik provided fried chicken and Cole slaw. I can not wait until Pat Scallion is back on her feet and baking. I love my wife and appreciate all the wives that contribute to skeet. It is a shame more women do not participate in shooting (not just because they are so gracious when they are beating me.) Doug Walker thrived in the subdued lighting, shooting a 194/200 and winning. LSSA president Wayne Tanner also shot well with a 191/200 gaining Runnerup. LSSA secretary treasurer Roland Thibodeaux shot 180/200 for B1 and Veteran Championship. Drs. Phillip Carney and Robert Crotty, took C1 and D1 while also becoming Sub Senior Champion and Runner up--i am sure neither wants to be known as "dead eye." Gene Saizon was our only Skeet shooter who cared to go both ways--he shot 91/100 in skeet and 93/100 in trap for the morning. We have a club near West Monroe that has two fields and holds registered Skeet shoots. Twenty shooters can be easily handled. If ever needed, we are willing to host 30 and have done so. We will have a third field whenever I get motivated. Eventually we will have background trees removed, but that is at the whim of timber man with the contract. Brittani Gray - Referee Page 18

TBMGC 20 Gauge Marathon I cannot promise you bad targets, bad food, bad weather, or a bad attitude. We have 2 more shoots this year including a 28 gauge marathon June 4th with eleven shooters registered and a.410 marathon on Sunday September 10. If you need to bring more than ten of your friends, I will be too busy to shoot and will be happy to make room. I very much appreciate all who shoot with us here and elsewhere. The Windy Open Red Chute Shotgun Sports Club on Barksdale AFB kicked off its 2017 Skeet program with The Windy Open on March 18th. The program was a 200 target marathon in the 12 gauge. We were pleased to have pleasant weather, no rain and not much wind for March. We were also pleased to have 29 contestants to vie for the honors this day. David Hebert posted a 98 in the morning and another one in the afternoon to take the Championship Honors with a 196. Randi Corley and Jared Gay were hot on his heels each posting 195 scores. Randi won the shoot-off taking Runner-Up and Jared took 3rd. David Hebert, Champion Randi Corley, Runner-Up and Jared Gay 3rd Everyone's scores are shown on the next page. Page 22

The Windy Open Roland Thibodeaux and Dennis Burnham [above left] both shot 182 and had to shoot-off for C3. Dennis one that honor. Jerrel Foster and Russell Cox [above right] both posted 178. Russel Cox won that shoot-off to take D2. Lloyd Webb blessed us with a culinary treat. Lloyd has a new Jambalaya pot that he was itching to try out. He cooked up the best chicken and sausage Jambalaya that I have eaten in a long time. That was served with a green salad and some good garlic bread. Debbie Frey made up a delicious Cherry Dump Cake which when served with Blue Bell ice cream was also a big hit. Thank you Lloyd and Debbie! Page 24

The Windy Open Robert Miller, Russell Cox and Jerrel Foster Our season starter was a lot of fun. It did not rain on our parade and we actually had pleasant temperatures. The turnout was decent and the competitors were all good sports. Some were actually good shots too! Paul Williams, Kevin Hall, Bobby Rains, Gary Sullivan and Philip Harris did a great job as our referees. We hope you will come shoot with us in May. Rumor has it that Lloyd Webb may even cook fried quail for us. Until then, I am wishing you 3@8. Doug Frey Page 27

TBMGC 28 Gauge Marathon The TBMGC had a 28 gauge marathon with 12 participants March 19, 2017. The weather was good for everyone. A five man squad was kind enough to come up from the Lafayette Skeet Club and shot with great success. Donnie Sanders ended a 36 year skeet retirement. Jean Schodlatz, Beverly Walker, and Karen Haik provided their usual excellent meal which was happily consumed with great appreciation. We dined on chicken and sausage gumbo with garden salad and garlic bread. Ronald Leger shot his first 98/100 on the way to his 190 which also earned him his first shoot Championship. We were all almost as happy for him as he was. I hope he has more success. His squad mates sure want to ventilate his hat. Wayne Tanner won a shoot-off with Burt Hoffpauir for runner-up and third. THE RED CHUTE GAZETTE DEAL Mission Statement The goal of the Red Chute Gazette is to promote the game of American Skeet. Our target market includes Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas. Our goal is accomplished through publication and distribution an Internet only magazine containing items of interest to those individuals participating in, promoting and supporting registered skeet shoots. Subject matter includes calendars of upcoming events, shoot flyers, shoot reports and pictures. Also included are articles and stories about bird hunting, travel and food. The Deal The Red Chute Gazette will publish flyers advertising registered skeet shoots for your gun club at no cost to your club. Simply send us your flyer in Microsoft Word or PDF format via E-Mail. That s FREE! The Catch If we agree to publish your shoot flyers, you agree to provide us with a shoot report, write-up or article suitable for printing in the Red Chute Gazette. Include pictures (jpeg or gif files) if possible. It doesn t have to be lengthy and it doesn t have be worthy of a Pulitzer. Just tell or show our readers about the fun you had. What about Sporting Clays and Trap or other events? The mission of the Red Chute Gazette is to promote interest and participation in registered Skeet. Sporting Clays and Trap are not subjects we focus on. We recognize that many gun clubs offer events other than Skeet. We are happy to provide commercial advertising space for clubs that wish to promote other shooting related events...
