Oxygen is Drawn to a Magnetic Field Paramagnetic One of the properties of oxygen is that it is paramagnetic or drawn to a magnetic field. The picture above shows liquid Oxygen suspended in a magnetic field. 3
Thermoparamagnetic Oxygen (TPM) Sensor Oxygen s paramagnetic property causes it to be attracted to a magnetic field. Heating the gas cases less attraction of Oxygen to the magnetic field. The sensor has a strong magnet and two pairs of heated thermistors. Gas movement causes magnetic wind which cools the wind generating thermistor. The resistance of the thermistors are proportional their temperature. A bridge circuit provides a voltage proportional to the oxygen concentration W2 W1 V O2 RZ R2 R1 V comp W1, W2 = WIND GENERATING THERMISTORS R1, R2 = WIND RECEIVING THERMISTORS 4
Dumbbell Type Paramagnetic O2 Sensor Two nitrogen filled glass spheres are suspended within an electromagnetic field. Oxygen attracted into the magnetic field displaces the nitrogen filled spheres, causing the suspended spheres to rotate. The mount of current it takes to restore the spheres to a null position is related the oxygen concentration. It is controlled by the amount of light received by a photocell. 5

XMO2 Oxygen Analyzer Applications Inerting of Storage Tanks Olefins (Ethylene) Refineries Oxygen Purity Landfill or Bio Gas Ozone Production Flare Gas & Vents Reactor Feed Gases & Catalyst Recovery Wastewater & Sewage Solvent Recovery 8
Inerting Chemical/Fuel Storage The head space of chemical and fuel storage tanks are often purged with an inert gas to assure that the O2 concentration below the LEL (Lower Explosion Level) Ambient air contains 21% O2 The XMO2 is rugged, explosion proof and has no moving parts. 9
Sampling System For Inerting 10
O2 Measurement for Tanker Inerting Alfa Laval/Aalborg/Smit Gas Inerting utilizes the products of combustion for inerting fuel and chemical tankers. Shipboard inert blanketing gas is produced by combusting fuel utilizing seawater to cool chamber wash the product of combustion which is mainly N2 & CO2. The combustion gas is cooled below the dew point to condense water. The dry clean gas is used to blanket fuel can chemical tankers 11
Oxygen Measurement in Vapor Recovery Systems Aeron located in Louisville, KY is an OEM of vapor recovery units To comply with environmental regulations and to yield more available energy whenever a tank (barge or ship) is loaded vapor recovery units are used and O 2 transmitters are used 12
XMO2 for Plastic Resin Production Background: Sabic produces a variety of engineered plastics including Lexan & Noryl. Application: Oxygen control in polymer reactor vessels. %O2 kept under 9% (LEL). Typically maintaining 4%. System sold: XMO2/TMO2D with Sampling system. Sample system includes filter, eductor (to pull sample) and solenoid for N2 (zero) and Air (21% O2) gases. Past experience with XMO2. No moving parts on TPM technology.reliable for process environment Turnkey sampling system Digital interface for automated zero and span calibration (no manual adjustment needed) 13
Oxygen Analyzers for Floating Platform Stainless Steel body transmitters were used for Kaombo Deep Water Offshore Oil Platform. Two FPSO units, each with a treatment capacity of 115,000 barrels per day, will process, store and offload the production. 14

OXY.IQ Galvanic Oxygen Transmitter - Applications Ambient Air Monitor Glove Boxes Food & Pharma Processing Welding Shield Gas Metal Processing, Heat Treating & Annealing 21
Arc Welding Arc welding is process that utilizes electricity to produce the weld. A constant-current welding power supply produces electrical energy, which is conducted across the arc through a column of highly ionized gas and metal vapors known as a plasma. The weld area is protected from atmospheric contamination by an inert shielding gas (Argon or Helium). The shield gas must be devoid of oxygen and H2O TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) MIG (Metal Inert Gas) MAG (Metal Active Gas) 22
Soft Contact Lens Production Location: Rochester, NY Application: For the production of soft contact lenses the Oxygen concentration must be controlled. The manufacturing plant is under FDA regulations strict quality control. Solution: Oxy.IQ Simple compact loop powered transmitter Easy to calibrate and validate Minimal maintenance Just replace the sensor element every 12 months Sensors may be field replaced and calibrated to ambient air (21% O 2 ) 23
