Non-Conference GREEN BAY AIMS FOR SECOND TOURNAMENT TITLE Winners of four-straight games and eight of its past nine contests, Green Bay takes the floor on Monday afternoon aiming for its second tournament title of the 201-15 season. After winning the Gulf Coast Showcase and Sunday s opener in the Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic, Green Bay is -0 on neutral floors this season. In Sunday s 66-6 win over UALR, the unheralded trio of Jordan Fouse, Alfonzo McKinnie and Carrington Love provided the offense while the Trojans keyed in on Keifer Sykes. Fouse tied a career high with 17 points, McKinnie had a double-double with 16 points and 10 reboudns and Love added 1 points and five assists. Meanwhile, the Phoenix defense continued its stifling ways. Green Bay held UALR, which entered averaging 7-plus points, to only 6 points on.6 percent shooting. During its win streak, Green Bay is allowing only 9.8 points on 5 percent shooting. Green Bay has not allowed more than 62 points in any of its nine victories this season. Green Bay s defense has kept the Phoenix from playing in many close contests. Only one of the team s games has been decided by 10 points or less, a 6-62 win over Evansville. In each of Green Bay s other seven wins, the opponent has failed to reach 60 points. THREE-POINT PLAY 1. RETURN OF THE MAC: McKinnie s performance on Sunday was his best in 20 career games with the Phoenix. The 6-foot-8 senior made 7-of-9 shots from the field and had career highs in points (16), rebounds (10), field goals (7) and minutes (). 2. MOVIN ON UP: Sykes continues his climb up the program s scoring chart. The senior guard has scored 1,672 career points, and on Sunday passed Mike Schactner (1667, 2005-09) for seventh place all-time. With seven points today, the Chicago native will leap over both Rahmon Fletcher (2007-11, 1678) and former teammate Alec Brown (2010-1, 1678) into fifth place.. JUMPSTARTED: The team s great start to the season is due in large part to great starts to games. Green Bay has led at least 6-0 six times, and on three different occasions has held the opponent off the scoreboard for at least six minutes. PROBABLE STARTERS No. Name Pos. Yr. Ht. Wt. Keifer s Key Notes WINNING WEEKLY The Horizon League handed out weekly awards 17 times during the 201-1, and either Alec Brown or Keifer Sykes were recognized 10 times. Sykes six weekly awards in 201-1 marked a Green Bay and Horizon League record. After winning on Dec. 1, Sykes has now won the award 11 times in his career, the most in league history. CHARITY WORK In 201-1, Sykes made 188 free throws to break his own single-season program record for free throws made (159), set in 2012-1. With 5 free throws made in his career, Sykes has already broken Tony Bennett s Division I program record of 11 and is just nine shy of breaking the all-time mark. Sykes made 66.7 percent as a freshman but is 86-of-7 in the past three seasons (81.6%). THE BEST AGAINST THE BEST In seven games against NCAA Tournament teams in 201-1, Sykes averaged an outstanding 25.6 points and 5.1 assists. Sykes scored 2 points against NCAA Final Four participant Wisconsin. In a 75-72 win over eventual ACC Champion Virginia, Sykes posted 21 points and 10 assists. The point guard totaled 26 points on 10-of-17 shooting against Ivy League champion Harvard, and tallied 25 points and nine assists against Conference USA champion Tulsa. SECOND-HALF SYKES During Horizon League play in 201-1, Sykes averaged 1.5 second-half points and scored double digits after halftime in 1 of 16 games. In league action, Sykes second-half scoring average alone still ranked in the top- 10. For the season, Sykes averaged 12 points after intermission. As a sophomore, Sykes averaged 9.2 second-half points. AHEAD OF HIS TIME As a freshman, Sykes started 12 games before turning 18 years old. Sykes turned 20 years old on Dec. 0, 201 after scoring 1,108 points in 76 career games as a teenager. By comparison, that gave Sykes more points by his 20th birthday than former Creighton star Doug McDermott. As a teen, Sykes won a Phoenix record seven Horizon League Player of the Week awards and became the third-fastest player in Green Bay s Division I era to reach 1,000 points. TERRIFIC TWENTIES Sykes reached the 20-point plateau in half of his games played in 201-1. Against Virginia, Sykes became the first player in the program s Division I history to score 20 or more in six-straight games. The 6-foot point guard had 15 20-point games, fourth-most in the program s Division I history. Sykes, Jeff Nordgaard and Tony Bennett are the only Phoenix players since 1990 to have 15 or more in a season. BRIAN WARDLE Head Coach Fifth Season as Head Coach Alma Mater: Marquette 2001 Hometown: Willowbrook, Ill. Now with four seasons under his belt as the head men s basketball coach at Green Bay, Brian Wardle has certainly placed his imprint in every facet of the program, and the result has been championship level basketball. In 201-1, Wardle guided the Phoenix to a 2-7 overall record and a 1-2 mark in Horizon League action which secured the program s first conference championship since 1995-96. The season included a 12-game winning streak and a 7-0 start to league play. The Phoenix also received votes in national top-25 polls for the first time in 18 seasons. During the non-conference season, Green Bay earned third place in the Great Alaska Shootout and posted a 75-72 victory over the eventual regular season and tournament champions of the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Phoenix played in the postseason for the second-straight season, making the program s first appearance in the National Invitation Tournament in 22 years. After the 201-1 season, Wardle was honored with multiple awards, including being named the Horizon League Coach of the Year, the Skip Prosser Man of the Year and the NABC District 12 Coach of the Year. Several standout players have joined the program under Wardle s watch, including All-Horizon League big man and 201 NBA Draft pick Alec Brown. On June 26, 201, Brown was selected as the 50th overall pick by the Phoenix Suns, becoming just the fifth NBA Draft pick in program history. In his three seasons at Green Bay, Brown has been a three-time All-Region and All-League selection and is the only player in program or Horizon League history to tally more than 1,500 points, 750 rebounds and 00 blocked shots. As a junior, the 7-foot-1 Brown continued to develop his skillset and shot over 0 percent from long range in final two seasons in the program. Under Wardle s watch, Green Bay has also recruited and developed Keifer Sykes, the 201 Horizon League Player of the Year and a two-time All-League and all-district performer. After his junior campaign in 201-1, Sykes was named the program s first Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American since 1995-96. Racine native Jordan Fouse is another talented recruit to make an impact as a freshman. In 2012-1, Fouse became the first Horizon League freshman to lead the league in rebounding since 1995-96 and broke the Green Bay freshman records for rebounds and steals in a season. Along with Brown, Fouse was named to the Horizon League All-Defensive Team in 2012-1 and 201-1. He broke the program s single-season steals record as a sophomore. In 2012-1, Green Bay finished 18-16 overall and tied for third place in the Horizon League standings with a 10-6 record. The Phoenix won two conference tournament games for the first time 1998 before losing on a desperation three-pointer to top-seeded Valparaiso in the semifinals. After the season, which included a 9-7 win over BIG EAST champion Marquette on Dec. 19, Green Bay earned a berth into the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. Wardle preached a motto of compete, defend and rebound when he was hired on April 15, 2010, and the 2012-1 team began to embody this mantra. In conference play, Green Bay led the Horizon League in rebounding margin, field goal percentage defense and blocked shots. In 2011-12, Green Bay won its last five regular season games and eight of its last 11 contests overall to finish the season at 15-15. The Phoenix improved its overall win total and finished at 10-8 in the Horizon League. Green Bay s non-conference schedule ranked among the 10 toughest nationally as the Phoenix played road games against three NCAA Tournament teams - Marquette, Wisconsin and Virginia. Former Green Bay Director of Athletics Ken Bothof announced the hiring of Wardle as Green Bay s head men s basketball coach on April 15, 2010. Wardle, who at the time was the youngest active head coach in NCAA Division I basketball, is the sixth head coach ever to pilot in the Phoenix program. Wardle,, had spent the previous five seasons as a Phoenix assistant coach from 2005-10 under Tod Kowalczyk. During his assistant coaching tenure, the Phoenix totaled 92 victories, an average of 18. wins per season. Among his duties, he served as the team s primary recruiting and player evaluation coach. With a -2 (.67) record in his final two years as an assistant, the Phoenix made back-to-back appearances in the College Basketball Invitational, the program s first postseason trips since 1996. The 2 Horizon League wins during that stretch were the most in back-to-back years dating back to 1995-96 and 1996-97. During his time at Green Bay, Wardle developed five players--mike Schachtner, Ryan Tillema, Terry Evans, Troy Cotton and Rahmon Fletcher-who reached the 1,000-point plateau. Tillema and Fletcher each claimed first-team All-Horizon League honors, while Schachtner was a two-time second-team performer. Wardle came to the Phoenix after two years as director of basketball operations at his alma mater of Marquette University (200-0, 200-05), where he worked under his college coach, Tom Crean. The Golden Eagles earned National Invitation Tournament berths both years, and reached the quarterfinals of the postseason event in 200. A pair of current NBA players, Travis Diener and Steve Novak, played for Marquette during Wardle s time on staff. Prior to accepting the Green Bay job, he spent the final three months of his Marquette tenure as an assistant coach. Wardle currently ranks as the school s seventh all-time leading scorer with 1,690 career points. He averaged double figures all four years from 1997-98 through 2000-01, and led the Golden Eagles in scoring in each of his final three seasons in Milwaukee. Wardle also ranks among the school s all-time top 10 in -point field goals made (197) and free throw percentage (.811). During his collegiate career, Wardle helped guide the Golden Eagles to a pair of National Invitation Tournament appearances (1998, 2000) and was voted team captain each of his last two seasons. As a senior at Marquette, Wardle was mentored by Crean, who is now the head coach at Indiana University, and Kowalczyk, the current University of Toledo head coach. He tossed in a career-high 18.8 points per game his senior year to rank second in Conference USA. Following the season, he captured first-team all-conference honors, becoming the first Marquette player to be such honored. Wardle was also chosen to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) District 11 second team. During his freshman season, he was named the C-USA Sixth Man of the Year and also was tabbed to the all-freshman team. Wardle graduated from Marquette with a bachelor s degree in communication studies in 2001 and was a Conference USA Commissioner s Honor Roll member each of his final three seasons. In addition, he received Marquette s 2000 Hank Raymonds Sportsmanship Award and the 2001 McCahill Leadership Award. Following his graduation, Wardle played one season in the National Basketball Association Developmental League for Fayetteville (Ark.) and one with Rockford (Ill.) of the Continental Basketball Association. A Willowbrook, Ill., native, Wardle was a two-time all-state selection for Hinsdale Central High School, where he ranks as the school s all-time leading scorer and rebounder. He led the Red Devils to a 55-7 record over his final two years and was an honorable mention selection on the USA Today All-USA Team.
