UTA Cross Country 2013 Sun Belt Conference Championships Notes Men s Conference Champions (Southland: 1985, 1992, 1999; Western Athletic: 2012) Women s Conference Champions (Southland: 1986, 1997, 2000, 2001) 2013 Notes Sauer is Sweet John Sauerhage is in his 18th year as the head track and field and cross country coach at UTA. During his time in Arlington, he has led the Mavericks to 22 conference titles, including six in cross country. In addition, he has claimed 22 conference coach of the year awards, with five coming in cross country. New Kids on the Block Despite being brand-new to the Sun Belt Conference, the men s cross country team was picked as the preseason favorite to win the league title. The women s squad also earned respect, as the Mavs were predicted to place third in the league in the coaches vote. A First Time for Everything The men s cross country team is in search of back-to-back conference titles for the first time in school history. The men have four previous league trophies, having won the Southland Conference championship in 1985, 1992 and 1999, as well as the Western Athletic Conference title in 2012. Due for Another The women s cross country team is looking for its first league crown in 12 years. The program previously nabbed Southland Conference titles in 1986, 1997, 2000 and 2001. Follow the Leader The men s team has had three different individuals finish as the team s top performer through the first four meets of the year. Ryan Tilotta is the lone runner to pace the squad twice (UTA Season Opener and Cowboy Jamboree). Through four events, the women s team has been led twice by Gabriela Alfonzo and twice by Hannah Nilsson. Rank and File The UTA men s squad is currently ranked third in the South Central Region, the highest ranking in school history. The Mavericks are behind only Arkansas and Texas in the regional rankings. Virgilio Martinez Sophomore Arlington, Texas (Arlington) Has competed in all four meets, but did not finish the Notre Dame Invitational due to injury. Placed 29th at the Crimson Classic with a season-best 8k clocking of 25:38.5. Was a first-team All-Western Athletic Conference performer and WAC Freshman of the Year in 2012. Led the Mavericks at all but one event during his first year. Hannah Nilsson Malmo, Sweden (Jensen Gymnasium) Has paced the Mavericks at two of the four meets this season and has three top-20 finishes.
