Seven of the last eight seasons, the Sycamores have placed in the top three nationally in team grade point average finishing third in 2001-02, first in 2002-03; second in 2003-04; first in 2004-05, second in 2005-06, third in 2007-08; and first in 2008-09. In each of those seasons, ISU has recorded the highest team grade-point average among all 10 Missouri Valley Conference schools. The Sycamores have had seven different athletes named first-team academic all-conference and three -- Kelsey Luna, Kourtney Mennen and Melanie Boeglin -- named Prairie Farms MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Year and ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District V.

When we took over the program nine years ago, one of our main goals was to establish ourselves as the premier academic team in the country. Based on our accomplishments to this point, I think we ve done that. We recruit student-athletes who are committed to academic excellence. We believe there is a direct correlation between an athlete s work ethic in the classroom and their work ethic on the court. We have an outstanding Academic Enrichment Center and a terrific group of academic coordinators. With the support system we have in place for our players, it s almost impossible to fail here. It s refreshing for me, as a coach, to have a team that takes tremendous pride in being the best academically, as well as athletically. Head Coach Jim Wiedie The Sycamores won their third GPA national championship in 2008-09 with a 3.65 mark. In 2002-03, the Sycamores led the Women s Basketball Coaches Association s national academic rankings with a team GPA of 3.63, while also leading the country in scoring average with 80.0 points per game. That season, the Sycamores also captured the program s first-ever Missouri Valley Conference women s basketball regular-season championship. In 2005-06, the Sycamores again took the national title with a GPA of 3.60 and set a school record with 27 wins en route to reaching the second round of the Postseason Women s National Invitation Tournament.
