Biographical Note The "Yellowstone Park Diary" is an account of a tourist group's travels by coach through Yellowstone National Park in 1911. The author is presumably Louis E. "Doc" Downing, a Hamilton, Montana, druggist who was accompanied on his Yellowstone travels by his brother, Mason K. Downing, of Massachusetts. Louis Downing was the proprietor of the Bitter Root Drug Store, according to the 1920 census. He was born in Montana around 1888 to George S. (1850-1939) and Mary F. Downing (1853-1921), both natives of Massachusetts. In 1920, Downing married Florence (1890-1960), a Nevada native, and had a daughter, Elisabeth, who was born around 1916 in Oregon. The tourist group known as the "Family" in the "Yellowstone Park Diary" includes Lee Walton of Butte, Montana, Mr. and Mrs. Jewell of Mt. Hope, Kansas, Grace Banker and her sister, Helen Banker, of Aurora, Illinois, Marion B. "Jane" James and Laura L."Sis" Atemeyer of Chicago, Illinois, and D.T. Content The collection is one reel of microfilm that contains 27 pages of the "Yellowstone Park Diary" by Louis E. Downing. The diary is a travelogue of a tourist group's travels in Yellowstone National Park in the year 1911, month or time span unknown. The diary is typewritten and includes photographs taken by the author and other members of the tourist party. The diary consists of a descriptive itinerary in addition to anecdotes about the party's activities in the park.
