The OilRag Newsletter of the Pakenham Auto Club February 2012 Breaking News- Rally Awards PAC members Peter Evans, Andrew Mcathie and John Carney were awarded Service Awards at the Rally dinner on Saturday 28 th Jan. In addition, Steven Kenway and Lauren Kenway were given two great trophies for coming second outright in the VRC and, Tom and Scott Wright won Novice for the year. All great stuff from Victoria's leading car club. Competition Fees and Activity/ Competition Awards It seems to have been quite a while since the structure of both the competition fees the club charges for events and the make- up of the Competition / Activity Awards have been reviewed. The Committee has therefore decided to set up two sub-committees: Sub- committee formed to review Schedule of Competition Fees Sub- committee formed to review fee structure for all events conducted by PAC (and other clubs utilising McGregor Rd) and put forward a recommendation to Committee. They will also review how much we charge other clubs. The sub-committee will formulate a fee structure and report back to the full Committee. Sub-committee members Leon Prosser, Mick Kelly, John Hill Sub- Committee formed to review Club Competition/ Activity Awards Sub- committee to review the current Competition and Activity awards and put forward a recommendation to Committee. Issues to address will include: How are competition Points awarded and for what events- Which events will qualify for points? Review Trophy Structure (number of categories etc) Sub-committee members Leon Prosser, Sue Wasson, Peter Morrison Our aim is to establish a firm policy which can be posted on our website, making it easy for anyone to find information on our events and Awards. If you have any ideas or thoughts on these issues or want more information, please contact one of us through the emails on the PAC website. Leon Prosser PAC President 1

Coming Up: Round One of the VMC- 12th Feb 2012 Round one of the VMC is being run by PAC this year and will be held on Sunday the 12 th of Feb at McGregor Road. All members are encouraged to participate, It s not as daunting as it might sound and we encourage everyone to give it a go- especially our Junior Members. It will a great experience for them watching the best motorkhana drivers in Victoria at work. Members not competing are asked to come along and help out as officials. It takes quite a team to run an event like this and your assistance with checking- in or timekeeping would be appreciated. Leon Prosser Event Director Working Bee at McGregor Road- 11 Feb 2012 It s been nearly two years since we last had a working bee at the grounds but the good run has come to an end and there are a few maintenance issues that need to be addressed. The committee has decided to hold a working bee on 11th Feb. commencing at 9.00am. The jobs we hope to tackle are listed below along with the possible equipment required, if you can help with any of these tasks or have equipment that can be used please contact me, either via email or phone 56 254049, so that I can coordinate the day. TASK Fence Repairs: A strainer panel and Approx 50 mts of fence need to be replaced on the East side of our paddock. To do this we need to clear a lot of dead limbs off the tree line. Fibreglass Repairs: The No.2 container requires some patches on the fibreglass walls and the doors need the latches removing to patch over some severely rusted panels. Painting: The Khanacross marker drums and the toilet trailer requirepainting. Motorkhana Setup: Leon and/or Mick will be setting up the Motorkhana tests for the V.M.C. round on the following day and I m sure they will appreciate some help. EQUIPMENT REQUIRED Chainsaws, axes Posts, wires, staples etc. will be supplied. Generator to operate angle grinder, drill etc, Spanners. Fibreglass materials and bolts will be supplied Paint brushes. Property Manager John Hill 2

Recent Happenings: Club Presentation Evening- 18 Jan 2012 The Club Presentation evening was held at the Nar Nar Goon hotel on the 18 th January. Members and guests enjoyed a meal before the presentation of the club awards for Competition and Activity. Guests of Honour were Joy and Ben Rawson, who were on hand to present the Keith Rawson Memorial True Blue award to the junior who made the most impact in both competition and general activities around the Club over 2011. Our 2011 Award winners are: Club Competition Champion True Blue Award Senior Motorkhana Champion Junior Motorkhana Champion Rally Driver Rally Navigator Khanacross Champion Speed Champion Nick Wright Nick has competed in numerous club and multi-club events over 2011 and commented the I have been trying to win this for 30 years so it is a great honour to have my name on here with so many other great competitors Mitch Garrard Glad Fish Mitch Garrard Wayne Stewart Lucas Zinsstay Nick Wright Angela Bloomfield Photographs of the evening will be available soon on the PAC Website Khanacross 15th January 2012 Our first event of the year was held over two days on Saturday 14 th and Sunday 15 th. John Hill directed a highly entertaining MultClub Khancross run over two days. The Khanacross was run on Sunday with an afternoon practice session held before the event on Saturday. The number of competitors who took advantage of the practice session was small but those that were there had a great afternoon- plenty of runs and ample opportunity to get used to new cars and the dry conditions. Weather conditions on Sunday were perfect- warm and dry. So dry in fact that the water truck was pressed in to service! 25 competitors took part, including 8 Juniors, and managed to complete 8 tests. Alan Bloomfield used his new Camry, Greg Wyatt let loose with Alfa (and had a small suspension problem), John Carney brought along the Getz and great fun was had by all. Class Winners were: Class A Bruce Rawlings Class B John White Class D John Carney Class J Mitch Garrard Congratulations to all the winners. Thanks to John for running a great event, thanks to the volunteers who helped out with scoring etc and thanks to Glenda for the always great catering. Leon 3

Come & Try 10 Dec 2011 A successful Come & Try was conducted on 10 Dec 2011 at McGregor Rd. John Carney spoke to the group about the aim of motorsport and PAC s Junior Development Program before they took to the cars. Experienced PAC members acted as instructors and quickly had the newcomers motoring around the tests with a surprising amount of confidence and ability. The club cars got a good workout and we w2ere able to utilise test being laid out for the final round of the VMC being held the next day, giving everyone a pretty interesting introduction to Motorkhanas. 11 first timers came along to have a go- 4 of those went on to take up Club Membership at the end of the day. Thanks to all the volunteers on the day. Leon Club Meetings: Don t forget the Club General Meetings, usually held on the first Monday of each month in the Community Room at the Living & Learning Centre, Pakenham 6B Henry St (entry is on the right hand side of the building). Sunday Coffee: Some members gather for an informal meeting on Sunday mornings at Lakeside Pakenham approx. 8:00 am. This is a good chance to take your club permitted car for a run. We are always looking for suggestions on how to make these more relevant to members (guest speakers, visits to businesses etc.) or further information on (or to offer suggestions for) meeting activities contact PAC Meeting Coordinator meetings@pakenhamautoclub.org.au 5

It s also the first edition to have a Rear View Mirror section which looked back over 15 years in 5 year increments. 2002 In 2002 this section (compiled by Elvira Killingsworth) was now spanning 25 years and still looked back in 5 year increments, so it filled nearly an entire page. Don t expect that kind of prolific output from me. John Hill 7
