The Center for Wooden Boats (CWB) is a hands-on maritime museum where visitors, members and volunteers get involved to learn, to teach, to build, to care for and to use historic small wooden boats. CWB provides access without barriers, providing a fun, inclusive gathering place at the water s edge. The Lake Union Wooden Boat Festival is CWB s signature event, hosting dozens of historic boats ranging from small rowboats to 100-foot pleasure boats and work boats. This year s Festival offers plenty of fun and informative experiences for all ages. Join the kids to build a toy boat or sail a boat on the model pond. Learn how to use traditional boat building tools, tie knots or caulk a hull. Meet the people who passionately preserve classic wooden powerboats and sailboats for future generations. Take a free boat ride or rent a rowboat and take it out on the lake yourself. Watch sailing and rowing races, or just walk the docks and look at all the beautiful boats. There will be multiple heats, or races. Sailors will cast off from the low dock west of the Boat Rentals, just east of M/V Lotus. The event showcases aspiring designer-builders. In teams of two, they have one day to construct a boat of a preapproved design using only cellulose-based materials. Then they must prove their vessels seaworthiness in a race that includes both wind and human power. Come watch them race into a new frontier. Winners will be determined by CWB staff. Awards are chosen by type of craft for speed, elegance, creativity, attire and other fun surprises. SKILLS DEMONSTRATIONS & ASK A BOATWRIGHT Ask CWB s boatwright questions about wooden boat maintenance, repair, and construction. This is your chance for some technical advice from CWB's own Lead Boatwright Josh Anderson. TRY-A-TOOL Use traditional hand tools to experience 10AM - 6PM cutting a dovetail, carving a mortise, planing, or even pounding some nails. Available tools will include: block planes, rabbit planes, bench planes, hand saws (both western push and Japanese pull), bit and brace, and spokeshaves. NATE ROOKS: HOW I BUILT MY DREAM ROWBOAT CWB Volunteer and 11A, 1P & 3P SailNOW! instructor Nate Rooks long dreamed of building a rowboat to explore the waters of the Salish Sea. This spring, Nate built his 20-foot, sliding-seat, wooden rowing wherry at CWB s North Lake Union Shop and then raced in a 70-mile course, finishing 11th overall. CAULKING DEMO How does a wooden boat float? Learn about different planking techniques and try your hand caulking a Blanchard Jr Knockabout. OAR MAKING Watch as volunteers traditionally fashion a new set of Sitka Spruce oards using only hand tools. SAIL REPAIR Our specialized sail repair team will demonstrate the work that goes into keeping our sails crisp. We ll have a marlinspike demonstration of fancy knot work. There also will be tool sharpening demonstrations. DISCOVERY MODELERS Discovery Modelers 10A-6P Education Center has displays on preserving maritime heritage and creating ship models. Come make a bookmark with your name in signal flags! BOAT RIDES Take a trip on Lake ON-THE-WATER WHARF Union by sail, row, 10AM - 6PM paddle, steam, electric or power boat. Boats vary but they all fill up fast! Free Ride sign-ups begin at 10am on Historic Ships Wharf near Virginia V. Rent a boat and explore Lake Union on your own! We offer row boats, kayaks and canoes. Rental prices vary by boat. PRICE 10AM - 4PM NORTHWEST SEAPORT VESSELS Explore the historic ships tugboat Arthur Foss & Lightship No. 83 Swiftsure through daily tours and ongoing Festival events. Arthur Foss is 129 years old. As one of the oldest floating vessels in the country, she's been the star of the film "Tugboat Annie," was sunk in 1937, escaped the capture of Wake Island in WWII, and more. Come see the restoration of Lightship No. 83, a pivotal part of costal navigation until 1960. F/V Tordenskjold was built in Ballard in 1911. She was named after the famous Dano-Norwegian naval hero, Peter Janssen Wessel Tordenskjold, and was one of the new breed of 20th century fishing boats that were equipped with engines. TEA ABOARD THE M/V LOTUS Come for tea or make a reservation to spend a night in 1909 aboard the yacht Lotus. Experience the warmth & simplicity of this Arts and Crafts era Cruising Houseboat. Children under 12: FREE BOARD THE FIREBOAT DUWAMISH Built in 1909 for the Seattle Fire Department, the Fireboat Duwamish protected Seattle's waterfront until her retirement in 1985. TOUR TUGBOAT ASK A BOATWRIGHT PUBLIC SAIL PADDLE MAKING $5 POND BOAT SAILING Try your hand at sailing a miniature sailboat. Push it off, gauge the wind, watch the sails fill and set sail across the pond. ARTHUR FOSS $3 PADDLE BOATS Yes they are plastic and not wood, but get out your camera, because this is non-stop fun for every kid in the boat and the crowds that gather to watch. Time in the water is limited because they are so popular! PADDLE BOATS TEA ON M/V LOTUS TRY-A-TOOL TOUR FIREBOAT DUWAMISH $3 PADDLE MAKING Start with a piece of rough cut cedar and sandpaper to see how it takes shape into a miniature canoe paddle. Then go for a Boat Ride and see the full-sized paddles that are used on the traditional native canoe called an umiaq. On-the water rides will also be available, on a first-come basis. $5 MODEL BOAT BUILDING For the older youth who have out-grown the toy boats. Twice the size and complexity, these are challenging and are meant to actually sail. Take it home to continue finishing and then find some water and give it a try! VOTE! for your favorite boat! Pick up your wooden nickel as you enter the Festival. We suggest you first take a look at all the boats both on the water and on the land. Climb aboard those boats that are open, ask questions of the captain and inspect the boat. Then circle back and drop your nickel in the People s Choice voting box of your favorite boat. The boat with the most nickels will be named Best in Show and will be recognized at the awards ceremony in the Dining Tent 5pm Sunday.
