ARIZONA SPECIAL ELK PERMIT Dates: Aug. 15, 2015 Aug. 14, 2016 Area: General season areas: Statewide except Units 11M, 25M, 26M, 38M and Mohave County Park Lands in Unit 16A. Archery-only areas: 11M and private property within municipal boundaries. (Open areas do not include areas within municipal parks, municipal preserves, county parks, county preserves, airports, golf courses, or posted water treatment facilities except as specifically opened in Commission Order 29 or areas closed to hunting under A.R.S. Sections 17-303 and 17-304 or Commission Rules R12-4-321, R12-4-801, R12-4-802 and R12-4-803). Note: The Grand Canyon Parashant, Vermilion Cliffs, Sonora Desert, Ironwood Forest and Agua Fria National Monuments are open to hunting. See notes in Commission Order 29 for additional closed areas. Hunting License: Included as part of the tag for this special elk hunt only Arizona boasts some of the biggest bulls in North America. Through the RMEF alone, this tag has raised more than $2.7 million since 1987 to benefit elk in the state. The White Mountain Apache Tribe will offer two special elk permits to nonmembers, an East End Tag and a West End tag. This special East End tag allows the hunter to hunt all open Wildlife Management Units in the Maverick and Sunrise Trophy areas of the Fort Apache Indian Reservation. The lucky winning bidder may begin hunting five weeks prior to the beginning of the normal trophy elk hunts. The Chairman s tag hunters have exclusive hunt Unit priority from August 1 Oct. 31. Included are the trophy fee for the donated animal and license/tag. Not included are guide service hunt transportation, field prep, accommodations, meals, meat processing, shipping, taxidermy and gratuities. This hunt may be upgraded (with the respective fees) to include one or more of the following: Management bull elk, cull bull elk, black bear and mountain lion. To date, the White Mountain Apache Tribe has produced more bull elk eligible for the all-time Boone & Crockett record book than any other comparably sized land-management entity in the world. NEW MEXICO SPECIAL ELK LICENSE Weapon: Any legal weapon Dates: Sept. 1, 2015 Jan. 31, 2016 Area: Statewide on any public land open to hunting, including Wildlife Management Areas and private land with permission New Mexico is famous for its trophy-class Rocky Mountain elk. The lucky hunter will have the opportunity to harvest a trophy-class bull in the game management unit of his or her choice using any legal weapon, regardless of the season. New Mexico has continued to manage its elk herds for both quality and trophy bulls. With about 80,000 elk in the state, several game management units consistently produce some of the largest bulls in the country with several bulls approaching or exceeding the 400 mark every year. An elk was harvested in 2008, setting the new world record for SCI typical elk, scoring 437-5/8. Proceeds from the permit sale will benefit elk in New Mexico.
