Gordon Kay Memorial GORDON KAY Gordon Kay Memorial Date: October 1, 2016 Where: TBA Address: TBA Location: TBA, AB. PC Gordon Kay Memorial 2016 1

Gordon Kay was an active member of the Alberta Weightlifting Association since its predecessor, the Alberta AAU Weightlifting Branch s 1958 inception. He was involved in weightlifting circles for over 40 years. An article in the Lethbridge Herald on April 29, 1958 states: Gordon Kay competed in the 1958 Olympic Weightlifting Provincials in the under 198 pound class. He finished second to Aoki Tats. At that time; the lifts included the two hands press, snatch and clean and jerk. He also held the Alberta 198 lb category Bench Press Record (305 lb) for some years. Gordon trained at the Lethbridge YMCA, with other well known members of the weightlifting community, Roy Sinclair senior, Dr. Roy Sinclair, Yukio Sam Kitigawa, Chuck Purdue, Maurice Irving and Aoki Tats. Aoki Tats was Gordon s coach and was one of the Alberta Instructors for Olympic Weightlifting who trained lifters at the Y. When Tats retired Gordon continued in his footsteps and taught classes in weightlifting for many years at the Y. The Lethbridge YMCA named the weight room after him. He served as the weightlifting chairperson for the 1975 Canada Winter Games held in Lethbridge & Bow Island. Gordon organized many weightlifting events in Lethbridge as well as conducting officiating clinics throughout Alberta. In 1975 Gordon became a Provincial referee. In 1977 he advanced to National referee. He then rose to international level shortly thereafter. He served on the Canadian Weightlifting Federation Officials committee from 1980-1992. It was officiating where Gordon made his greatest achievement. He was a scorekeeper at the 1978 Commonwealth Games, a referee at the 1986 World Weightlifting Championship and the 1991 Pan American Games as well as many years in various capacities at local, provincial, regional and national competitions. Gordon Kay passed away on Monday March 26, 2001 at the age of 74 due to complications from heart surgery. Gordon served in the Canadian Army in WWII. Later he went to the Garbutt Business School in Calgary. After graduation he then operated his Kay & Co. accounting firm for many years. 2
