VERN S CAMP from Minginui Map: Kuratau, 1:50,000 V18 Refer Figures 1, 3, 4 and 5 GPS: Geodetic Datum 1949 Refer Figure 10a (Geographic) and 10b (NZ Grid) How to get to START: From the police station on the domain go straight on Heu Heu Street at the traffic lights, turn left up Rifle Range Road and then at the T-junction at the top, facing the golf course turn right and follow Broadlands Road. 30 min pass Broadlands School 35 min (38km) turn right into Strathmore Road 38 min (41km) turn left into Sangro Road 40 min (42.5km) T-junction, right to Rawhiti Road 50 min (52km) Left to Goudees Road, becomes gravel 1 hr (60km) Right onto SH38 1:10 min (78km) Pass through Murupara, winding road 1:30 min (97km) Pass through Whaithi 1:33 min (99km) Right into Minginui Road 1:40 min (106.5km) Bear right to Forest Park 1:41 min (107.2km) Right again on unsealed road 1:42 min (108km) Left into River Road then left again at Y-fork 1:46 min cross bridge 1:50 min (113.5km) steep uphill to parking place Rough description: Figure 1 Map Sheet and Access Route The route can be traced on the map above where the route followed is shown in bright red from Taupo northwestwards though sheet U17, works eastwards through sheet V17 then southwards into the top of sheet V18. The green highlight in the middle of sheet V18 is the location of the car park at the south end of the Whirinaki Track on Plateau Road. Figure 2 Wonderful Native Forest An easy to moderate tramp of just over 5 hours with very little altitude gain or loss involved through very pleasant native forest, saved by action taken by David Bellamy amongst others. The track is generally very good and follows a route parallel to the Whirinaki River. On the return trip a deviation via the Waterfall Loop is used. On the trail there is a Track Log Book, located about 7 minutes into the walk, which you should sign on the way in and out. Also several of the native trees are identified with notices these include Miro, Matai, Tawa, Khamahi and Totara. There are also information boards about the Podocarp trees and also about local ducks. At Vern s Camp, where there used to be a hut, there is a toilet and a picnic table in the middle of the clearing so a very pleasant stop can be had if the weather is good. Vern s Camp from Minginui Page 1 of 5

Detail: From the Minginui car park (WP1 398masl), where there is a toilet, exit southwards under the arch on the wide, flat track. Almost immediately you come across notices naming and identifying some of the native trees and in about 7 minutes you come to a log book (WP2 390masl) at the edge of the track sign this and see who else has been on the track recently. In 14 minutes go straight at the T-junction (WP3 389masl) then up to a bridge on the canyon; right is the way to the waterfall loop, you will come back on that track. The waypoints collected by GPS are all shown in Figure 3 below with outward waypoints shown in yellow and return waypoints in green. The route outwards is shown in Figure 4 whilst the return is in Figure 5. Figure 3 Extract of Map with Critical Waypoints Vern s Camp from Minginui Page 2 of 5

Figure 4 Track inwards to Vern s Camp Figure 5 Track outwards on Waterfall Loop DOC is very active in this area and there are many possum traps to be seen along the way and the local, native vegetation is wonderful. On the day this walk was logged the trampers rescued one fern that had been uprooted by a falling tree and hopefully got it reestablished ta the edge of the track. Figure 7 Ferns are Fabulous Figure 6 DOC Trap Vern s Camp from Minginui Page 3 of 5

Your next two features are both bridges: 26 minutes (WP4 397masl) go right at the T-junction after the bridge for Vern s Camp Figure 8 Lunch at Vern s Camp 1:20 minutes (WP5 399masl) again go right at T-junction after the bridge, left takes you to Mangamate Hut In 1:44 minutes go left at the next T- junction (WP6 423masl), slightly downhill and over the bridge. When you return you will use the other branch from this T- junction to go via the Waterfall loop track. A matter of minutes after crossing this bridge and going uphill there is (was on the day in question) a very large tree to work round (WP7 430masl) (uphill side) as it had fallen over the track. Continue through the dense forest and in 2:35 minutes you emerge into the clearing of Vern s Camp (WP8 459masl). As stated earlier, if the weather is good, this is a very good place for lunch before turning round to go back as there is a toilet and a picnic table. However, if the weather is bad and the rain it doth pour then you have to try and shelter under the overhanging vegetation to partake of your lunch. After lunch return the way you came exiting the camp northwards and go left after crossing the bridge (WP6 423masl) and in about 15 minutes from the camp you will be on a bridge (WP10 433masl) above a waterfall. Continue on up the track for a view back over to the waterfall and, on the way, passing some kidney ferns. Figure 9 Kidney Ferns About 1 hour from the camp the track bends a bit after some signs indicating that you are on Private Land (WP11 426masl) and just after this the track turns into a motorable one. Ten minutes or so after this there is a Y- fork (WP12 429masl), go left downhill parallel to the river. You pass two waterfalls on your left in about 1:15 and 1:20 minutes from the camp (WPs 13 and 14) and then in about 2 hours you turn left at a T-junction (WP15) when you meet the track you used on the way out. You should then be back in the car park where you started in around 2:15 minutes after leaving Vern s Camp. Vern s Camp from Minginui Page 4 of 5
