He didn t disappoint as he tossed seven dominating innings to help the Horned Frogs get the 5-0 victory. Finnegan fanned eight of the first nine batters he faced en route to a career-high 13 strikeouts. It marked the third time in his career the left-hander notched double-digit strikeouts. Finnegan struck out 11 at Jacksonville last season and 12 against Texas. His efforts earned him his first career Pitcher of the Week accolade. MR. CONSISTENCY No surprise to followers of TCU baseball, but preseason All-American Preston Morrison picked up right where he left off last season, tossing eight shutout innings to help the Frogs to a 5-1 win over Jacksonville on Saturday. For the 20th time in his career, the junior turned in a quality start (6 or more innings). He tossed eight scoreless frames. Eleven times, Morrison has thrown at least eight innings in a start. He has started 27 games over the course of his career and boasts a miniscule 1.76 ERA in 183 2/3 innings pitched. ANOTHER MILESTONE IN REACH Winning has become synonymous with Jim Schlossnagle s name since his arrival on campus. It seems every year the head coach is chasing a record of some sorts and this season is no different. At 497 career wins as a head coach, he needs just four victories to collect his 500th win. Last season, Schlossnagle picked up his 400th coaching victory as the head coach of the Horned Frogs. He is 30 victories away from 450 in his TCU career with a 420-204 mark. In 12 seasons as a head coach, Schlossnagle has a.664 (497-251) winning percentage. He ranks 16th in winning percentage among active coaches with at least five years of experience. A TWO-SPORT STAR IN THE MAKING Freshman Ty Slanina is looking to do something this spring that hasn t been done since 2006 - be a baseball and football player at TCU. Chad Huffman played both football and baseball from 2004-06 when he hung up the football pads in favor of professional baseball. Slanina played wide receiver as a true freshman this past fall. He was integral part of the receiving corps, playing in all 12 games. Slanina recorded 26 catches for 204 yards, an average of 15.3 yards per game. FLASHING HIS WHEELS Cody Jones got off to a blistering start in 2014. The junior ranks second on the team with five hits, including a pair of multi-hit games Friday and Sunday. He boasts a.357 average (5- for-14), four runs scored and a double. In addition to his prowess at the plate, Jones flashed his speed on the bases. He is a perfect 5-for-5 in steals. Dating back to last season, he has stolen 11 straight bases successfully. For his career, Jones is 18-for-22. PLENTY OF NEW FACES ON THE DIAMOND Eleven Horned Frogs made their TCU debuts in the opening. Seven hitters at the plate and four pitchers on the mound got their first taste of playing baseball at TCU. On the mound, Tyler Alexander, Brian Howard, Jordan Kipper and Brian Trieglaff pitched in their first collegiate games. At the plate, the Frogs saw the beginning of five careers. Making their debuts were Garrett Crain, Connor Castellano, Jeremie Fagnan, Dylan Delso, Ty Slanina, Walker Pennington and Will Fox. TWO-OUT MAGIC The Horned Frogs did a solid job of keeping innings alive with two outs over the weekend and more often than not, the effort result in runs. 10 of the 20 runs scored by the Horned Frogs came with two outs in the inning. Jerrick Suiter ranks second on the team with three RBIs this season, all of them coming with two outs. TCU is hitting.279 as a team with two outs this season. The Frogs have gone down in order in just six of the 33 innings they ve been on offense. Last season, the Horned Frogs tallied only 88 two-out RBIs on the season and hit just.231 as a team with two outs. EXTRA, EXTRA The offense totaled 34 hits in the first four games, an average of 8.5 per game. Of the 34 hits, 10 went for extra bases. Kevin Cron leads the way with four doubles, while Cody Jones, Boomer White, Jerrick Suiter and Keaton Jones also collected a double over the weekend. Boomer White holds the distinction of hitting the first home run of the season for the Frogs, while Derek Odell collected TCU s first triple of the season. HIT ME WITH YOUR BEST SHOT In Tuesday s win over Northern Colorado the Horned Frogs tied a school record with four hit batters. It s the fifth time in school history that four Frogs have been hit in a game and the first since the 2012 season. Kevin Cron leads the way with three bruises.
