MARIETTA MIDDLE SCHOOL Indian Information Volume 2, Issue 1 August MMS Spotlight teacher Each newsletter we will be doing a spotlight Teacher of the Month. This newsletter, the spotlight teacher profiles Ms. Corbin. We found out Ms. Corbin betrayed the 7th grade. She told us that we would be her one and only favorite class. Apparently, she likes 6th grade better than any grade. That will change when the new 6th graders come through. Here s a few questions I asked her about herself: What is your favorite color? Green. How long have you been teaching? 20 years. What is your favorite grade? 6th grade. When is your birthday? May 23. Let s just say I get the best birthday present every year. What did you do this summer? I worked at the cleaners. What school did you go to when you were growing up? Durant. Welcome back What do you like to do when school is out? I don t know. Reading, being at home. This year I didn t get to enjoy that. I had to work everyday in the heat, at the cleaners. Do you have cats? Yes. How many cats do you have, and what are their names? 2, Gizzy (Siamese) and Boo (Black). What was your favorite subject in school? Math & Art. Article by Monica Flores Photo submitted by C. O Connor Words to live by... Don't find fault, find a remedy. Henry Ford Welcome back Marietta Middle School. We are off to a great start. We have a couple of new faces this year. Mrs. Bucher teachers 7th and 8th grade language. She will also be the Student Council Sponsor. Mrs. Stokes teachers 6th and 7th grade language, and is also the cheer coach for the MJH girls. Coach Tucker teachers 7th grade math. She also coaches 6th and 7th grade basketball. Coach Bowker is the PE and weightlifting coach. He also helps coach JH and HS football. We are off to a great year. Keep up the good work and have a great year! Article by Heaven Sustaire

P A G E 2 I N D I A N I N F O R M A T I O N New year, new faces We have some new faces this year at Marietta Middle School. We asked each new teacher a few questions to get to know them better. Be sure to look for them throughout the year as the Teacher Spotlight! Mrs. Stokes was interviewed by Kenia Pichardo What do you expect from your students? First and foremost, to be responsible and respectful. I also expect them to be eager to learn. Where did you teach before Marietta Middle School? Turner Elementary. Coach Tucker was interviewed by Aaliyah Garcia What do you expect of your classes? I expect the effort and respect from my classes. What were you doing before you came to Marietta? I was going to school at East Central. Coach Bowker was interviewed by Amelia Lawson How is school at Marietta? I have genuinely enjoyed school so far at Marietta. The students respond well to my teaching style, and it is much more fun than my previous job a foreman on a electrical construction crew. Is this your first year being a coach? Yes! Mrs. Bucher was interviewed by Monica Flores When did you start teaching? Last year. Why do you teach? Hmm. That s a good question. So I can help students succeed in life, after school, and whatever they want to do with their lives. Get ting to know Mr. Davis Mr. Davis is our ISD monitor. For two years he was a marine coach and got out as a sergeant. A marine coach is a little bit different than our coaches here. In the marines everyone has to have a skill set. So, if you re good at those skills, they will ask you to be a coach. I loved being a marine coach, it was a lot of fun. That s what inspired me to become a teacher, Davis said. Here are some questions I asked him. What year did you graduate school? 2004 How many years have you been the ISD monitor? I have worked at Marietta 2 years, and marine coach for 2 years. What s your favorite color? Blue. What were you in the marines? Soccer club This year there is a soccer club in Love County! It is the first year for there to be one in Marietta, but it s the most popular sport in the world. (Thank you Google for this random fact.) Soccer, also known as football, is played between 2 teams with 11 people on each team (Would you look at that, more facts!) Since Mrs. Jefferson s kids are participating, I talked to her to learn more about it. Its for everyone who wants to play soccer in Love County. 115 kids For more information on the Marietta Soccer Club contact Mrs. Jefferson signed up including my kids, Mrs. Jefferson said, Practices are in Marietta and games are in Ardmore. P A G E 3 Movie review san Andreas I asked Bricaria Houston what her favorite movie was. She said it was San Andreas. She said it is her favorite movie because it is a very exciting movie and the ending was sad and exciting at the same time. Ray (Dwayne The Rock Johnson) has an okay life. He is a chopper rescue pilot, but his wife is filing for divorce and he is worried about his daughter. One day out of nowhere, the ground begins to shake, and everything goes wrong from there. Somewhere through it all, he sees his soonto-be ex-wife on top of a falling building. He is also told his daughter is stuck in a parking garage. In this action packed bitter-sweet movie, Ray is pushed to the very limit to save...very exciting movie and the ending was sad and exciting at the same time. - Bricaria H. his family from the magnitude 9 earthquake. Article by Heaven Sustaire (Summery courtesy of google.com) Song review Fight Song I chose Fight Song by Rachel Platten. The song is about believing in yourself and empowering your worth. You can do anything you believe in. Just prove to everyone that they can t limit your possibilities. I might only have one match, but I can make an explosion - That verse from Rachel s song is so powerful. The song to me is just so beautiful. It makes me smile and it reminds me to be happy. I m glad somebody wrote a powerful song like that and made it a hit. Most popular songs these days of modern song popularity are cursing and/or promoting bad behavior. This song is so inspiring and I love it! Article by Amelia Lawson MMS CHeer We have a new JH Cheer sponsor this year Mrs. Stokes. This is Mrs. Stokes first year to be a cheer coach. So far I m really enjoying the experience and spending time with the girls, Stokes said. Mrs. Stokes has experience with cheering. I cheered here, at Marietta, for a couple of years and a co-ed squad from Thackerville one year. My JH squad at Marietta went to Nationals at Disney World to compete, Stokes added, I am loving the new experience of teaching middle school. The JH cheerleaders will be cheering for JH football and basketball games. Article by Amelia Lawson I would like to thank Coach Messer. Coach Messer has been an awesome teacher. He has taught me so much. He makes things really easy. Even though we get on his nerves, he still likes us. By we, I mean Selene, Olivia, Miriam, and Kevin. Coach Messer has dealt with so much from us. Thank you again, and have a great year! -Kenia Pichardo To all of my friends: Thank you for always being there for me. I don t know what I would do without you all. Every school day would be so boring without ya ll. Even when I m having a bad day, ya ll always make it into a better day. Having you guys at school is one of the things I look forward to everyday. If I didn t have you all, I wouldn't have anyone to laugh with, hangout with, or talk to. Thank you all for everything ya ll do and for being my friend. -River Pierce

School Motto Over the summer, our teachers came up with a school motto. Together We Achieve! It means we are all stronger together and more successful when we work together. In different ways, it can be used for any situation. Whether it s family, sports, school, ect. it applies it some way, which I think is pretty neat. Together We Achieve Article by Kyle Slawson P A G E 5 ADVICE COLUMN Have you ever needed advice, but you were too scared to ask? You thought you would get made fun of for wanting help, or that no one would understand? Now you can ask questions, get advice, and no one will know it s you! In the library, there will be a box with slips of paper beside it. You can write anonymous questions and get advice/answers from your peers in the next newspaper. sports Softball Mrs. Gore and Coach Tucker both had expectations for us this season. Um, improving on little things, and for Carslee Minyard to hit the ball over the fence, Coach Tucker (first year as coach) said. Mrs. Gore (9th year as coach) added, I expect the girls to always work hard and have fun. It is a great day when you can go out and do what you love. I expect them to take school seriously! It will take you places. We have had a pretty good year in fast pitch, even though all of the team has had our ups and downs, it was still a great season. We have won and lost games as a team. After we lose a game, we all learned from our mistakes that we have made as a team and we fix them. I appreciate all the girls on the team for their hard work that they have done all season, and I can t wait until I love seeing the girls accomplish a goal they have set for themselves, - Mrs. Gore Cross Country slow pitch. Article by Madison Lemons Coach Appelman doesn t get a little paragraph of something like others do. So, I m just going to skip to the questions I asked him. What are your expectations for the JH and HS Cross Country teams this year? (Both teams) To work hard in XC, as well as class. To become closer as a team, and for each person to meet their individual goals. Now for the JH expectations. For them to stay a strong group of girls and boys. I m excited for the potential this year, Coach Appelman said, I think if everybody continues to work hard, the JH team can be the best team we ve had since I ve been here. Article by Monica Flores Football The 7th and 8th grade football players are really excited for the season. It s the only sport you can tackle people in, Nolan Birks said. When asked about the season, Coach Jessie seemed very positive and ready. I like coaching football, because I like the intensity of the game. I also love that it s a physical sport. I am very excited for the season, because just practicing gets boring. My favorite part so far is hanging out with a great group of kids I coach, Jessie said. Overall all of the football boys are pretty excited and are definitely ready to play. It doesn t matter how big you are, it s how big you play, Brian Latimer said. If you ever have the time, I am sure they would really appreciated the support! Article by Heaven Sustaire
