REVIEW TEST 4 Name: Date: READING (15 marks) Piri Reis and his world map Piri Reis came from Turkey. He was born in about 1465 and died in 1553. Piri Reis travelled around the Mediterranean Sea and the Arabian Gulf. He was a famous sea captain. Today he is famous for his world map. Piri Reis s world map comes from his Book of Navigation (1521). Most of the book is in Turkish. It has information on navigation and maps of ports and cities in the Mediterranean Sea. The book also has a world map. This world map shows parts of Europe, North Africa and South America. Piri Reis used older Arab, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Indian and Greek maps to help him draw his world map. The map also shows the Azores and the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean. Peri Reis became famous when part of his world map was found in the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul in 1929. It is the oldest Turkish world map. REVIEW TEST 5 Name: Date: READING (10 marks) Twenty20 cricket: short, fast and exciting! Cricket is very popular in Australia, New Zealand, England, India, the West Indies and South Africa. Adults and children play cricket. They play in their free time. They usually play on a pitch, but sometimes they play cricket on the beach or in the park. Twenty20 is a short form of cricket. A match can last two or three hours. It is much quicker than traditional cricket. A traditional one-day cricket match can last seven to eight hours and a test match lasts up to five days. In Twenty20 cricket, there are two teams of 11 players. One team tries to score points by hitting a ball and the other team tries to stop them. Each team has a limited time between 75 and 90 minutes. After a short break, the teams change places and the other team tries to score more points to win the game. Twenty20 cricket is very popular. Large crowds come to watch. Teams must score quickly, so it is fast and exciting. In 2013, Chris Gayle scored 100 runs from 30 balls, a new record for professional cricket. The Indian Premier League (IPL) is the richest Twenty20 competition. The television rights cost US $1.6 billion. A lot of players from other countries play in the IPL.
