2 2016 17 COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON BASKETBALL GAME NOTES @EARLGRANTCOFC HC EARL GRANT Head Coach Earl Grant, 39, was named the 23rd men s basketball head coach at College of Charleston in September of 2014. A former Lowcountry prep star out of R.B. Stall High School, Grant joined the company of CofC coaching greats Alfred von Kolnitz (1924-26), Ernest Wehman (two tenures from 1933-42, 1957-58), Willard Silcox, Sr. (three tenures: 1943-44, 1948-53, 1955-56), Fred Daniels (1968-70), Alan LeForce (1970-79), the program s all-time winningest coach John Kresse (1979-2002) and Bobby Cremins (2006-12). In his second season with the Cougars, he and his staff turned the program into one of the most improved in NCAA Division I and developed four all-conference players including Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Year and All- CAA Third Team selection Jarrell Brantley - the first freshman to receive such honors since 2006. The Cougars also finished the 2015-16 season ranked No. 8 in the nation in scoring defense holding opponents to an average of 62.0 points per game - the seventh-lowest average in the program s NCAA Division I era. They also limited 16 of their 18 CAA opponents to 65 points or less and allowed a league-low 59.2 points per game in conference play. In addition, CofC went 9-4 in non-conference action including an upset of preseason Top-25 ranked LSU and projected No. 1 NBA Draft pick Ben Simmons on November 30, 2015 at TD Arena. Known as a top recruiter, Grant has also signed back-to-back recruiting classes that will help the Cougars contend for CAA Championships. He previously spent four seasons as an assistant coach at Clemson under Brad Brownell, where he made a positive impact on the Tiger men s basketball program, both in recruiting and with player development. He worked primarily with Clemson s point guards. A native of North Charleston, S.C., Grant earned his bachelor s degree in psychology from Georgia College in 2000. He and his wife, Jacci, a 2001 College of Charleston graduate receiving a degree in elementary education, have three sons: Trey (9), Eyzaiah (8) and Elonzo (5). GAME PREVIEW Delaware (7-7, 0-1 CAA) will be the next early CAA road test for the College of Charleston men s basketball team (10-4, 1-0 CAA) in both programs first game of the New Year. Tipoff between the Cougars and Blue Hens is slated for Monday, Jan. 2 at 6 p.m. (ET) at the Bob Carpenter Center in Newark, Del. CofC has won seven of its last eight games averaging 71.5 points and shooting.458 percent from the field in its last two road victories combined at Western Carolina (77-59) on Dec. 22 and Elon in the league opener (66-54) on Dec. 31. Sophomore forward Jarrell Brantley turned in a near double-double performance with a season-high 19 points and nine rebounds at Elon. The preseason CAA First Team selection is currently the team s second-leading scorer (13.5 ppg) and top rebounder (7.9 rpg) just a year removed from earning CAA Rookie of the Year honors. The Cougars are playing some of their best basketball of the season and will close out a five-game road stretch that first began on Dec. 15 at East Carolina. Both CofC and UD rank No. 1 (59.5 ppg and 27.0%) and No. 2 (64.7 ppg and 28.5%) respectively in the Colonial in scoring defense and three-point field goal percentage defense. DELAWARE AT-A-GLANCE The Blue Hens are under the direction of first-year head coach Martin Ingelsby and 5-1 at home this season at the Bob Carpenter Center. They currently rank No. 23 in the nation in defensive rebounds per game (29.0 avg.), which is tops in the league. Freshman guard Ryan Daly leads the team in both the scoring and rebounding columns averaging 12.6 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. UD looks to rebound from a close 58-56 conferenceopening loss to Hofstra on Dec. 31. SHUTDOWN SECOND-HALF D In the last five out of six games, the Cougars have held Davidson, Anderson, East Carolina, Western Carolina and Elon to a combined average of just 24.8 points per game and 14.9 percent shooting from beyond the arc in the second half. CofC held Elon without a point in the second half until the 13:32 minute mark and ECU until the 12:34 minute mark. COFC ALL-TIME IN CAA OPENERS College of Charleston is now 3-1 all-time in CAA openers. The Cougars have commenced the conference season on the road for the third-straight year. Last season, the Cougars opened league play at James Madison (W, 65-62) on Dec. 31, 2015 in Harrisonburg, Va. In its inaugural campaign as members of the Colonial in 2013-14, CofC claimed its first-ever CAA win over James Madison (75-61) on Jan. 7, 2014 at TD Arena in Charleston, S.C., and as secondyear league members a loss at William & Mary (L, 45-75) on Jan. 3, 2015 in Williamsburg, Va.

4 2016 17 COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON BASKETBALL GAME NOTES TAKING ADVANTAGE OF CHARITY The Cougars took advantage of charity at Coastal Carolina on Nov. 14. They went to the line 23 times and made 21 free throws for a 91.3 accuracy rate from the line. It was the second-highest free throw percentage in the last three years under head coach Earl Grant next to a making 13-of-14 attempts (92.9%) at UNCW on Jan. 30, 2015. Joe Chealey went 5-for-5, while Jarrell Brantley went 4-for-4 against the Chanticleers. THE ORLANDO CONNECTION Redshirts Joe Chealey (24 points) and Grant Riller (21 points) combined for 45 of the team s 81 points versus The Citadel in the team s Nov. 11 season opener. Both missed the entire 2015-16 season due to preseason injuries. Chealey (Achilles tendon) and Riller (ACL) are currently the team s Top 2 leading scorers. OFF TO A GOOD START The Cougars started the season off at 3-0 for the first time since 2011-12 where they last defeated Holy Cross, Morehead State and Clemson in a row. Ironically, current CofC assistant coach Milan Brown was the head coach at Holy Cross and head coach Earl Grant was an assistant coach at Clemson during CofC s run. DESTINATION CITY, DESTINATION CAMPUS College of Charleston is one of only three NCAA Division I schools in the country to host an ESPN tournament on its campus next to the University of Hawai i and Cal State Fullerton. The Cougars, however, can only participate in the Charleston Classic every four years. The city of Charleston has been consistently ranked the No. 1 destination city in the United States and world, while The College is also the 13th-oldest institution of higher learning in the U.S. DEFENSE, COUGARS, DEFENSE The CofC defense has frustrated nine of its 13 non-conference opponents to under their scoring average from a year ago as well as their scoring average entering the ballgame versus the Cougars. The Citadel, who ranked No. 2 in the nation in scoring offense last season, was held to 68 points and an opponent season-low 29.9 percent shooting from the field on Nov. 11 at TD Arena. OPPONENT 2015-16 SCORING OFFENSE POINTS SCORED vs. COFC The Citadel 86.0 ppg 68 Points Coastal Carolina 73.0 ppg 64 Points Boise State 77.5 ppg 47 Points UCF 68.7 ppg 60 Points Villanova 78.0 ppg 63 Points USC Upstate 72.3 ppg 60 Points (season low) Navy 67.6 ppg 64 Points Davidson 76.5 ppg* 61 Points East Carolina 67.8 ppg* 35 Points (season low) * denotes 2016-17 scoring offense ELON RECAP College of Charleston 66, Elon 54 With the win, College of Charleston now leads 17-6 in the all-time series with Elon. This was the first game in the last three contests between both schools that was not decided in single digits (+12). CofC has also won the last fourstraight road games at Elon in the series. Jarrell Brantley recorded a season-high 19 points and nine rebounds at Elon. He scored a season-best 12 points in the first half alone. Brantley has registered double figures in 13-of-14 games this season. Joe Chealey dished out a season-high six assists at Elon one short of his career-high outing in a single game (7). He also added 10 points. Chevez Goodwin turned in a career-and season-high tying eight points, career-best six rebounds and two block shots in only 17 minutes off the bench at Elon. The Cougars drained a season-best tying seven three-pointers (7-of-15) in the first half. They previously made 7-of-14 in the first half at Western Carolina on Dec. 22. The CofC defense held Elon, ranked No. 19 in the nation in three-point field goals per game, to its worst shooting percentage of the season from long range (3-of-20) and third-lowest shooting percentage from the field (38.9%).

2016 17 COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON BASKETBALL GAME NOTES 5 COUGARS AGAINST THE TOP 25 CofC faced its first ranked team of the season in No. 2/2-ranked and defending national champion Villanova on Nov. 23. The Cougars are 6-22 all-time versus teams ranked in The Associated Press Top 25 Poll having last faced No. 15 Miami as part of the last game in a 2-for-1 series a year ago with the Hurricanes (L, 63-85) in Coral Gables, Fla. COUGAR SOUND BITES Delaware is pretty good at what they do. They are a whole different ballclub than they were last year. We will see a different style of play and a different defensive scheme on Monday night. There s a newness to it and they have a few young players playing well right now. We will have to play well and be really sharp. It s another tough road game with less than 36 hours to prep. College of Charleston Head Coach Earl Grant on Delaware We always bring the same intensity and energy into all of our games. We had a good game at Elon. It was our first conference win and we needed that one to begin the season. But, we have to find more ways to be more scrappy, get all of the rebounds we can, play defense and play to our standards play defense, rebound, execute on offense and just have fun out there. Freshman forward Chevez Goodwin on building on the momentum of the Elon win into the Delaware game I m glad we have been on the road for this long. We ve used the time away to come together as a team more as a family. Everyone has adjusted and learned their role on the team. My role is to come off the bench and rebound, defend and block shots use my skills to the best of my ability to help my team get a win. Hopefully, we will gel even more as conference play continues. Goodwin on the bonding that has happened over the last five-game road stretch translating into the team s success
