No If not, would you like more information on NSTA? No Long Questions Proposal Summary Most students are aware that they have to take geometry in their high school career and understand that it deals with shapes. However, most students don t realize the real world applications of geometry. The purpose of this project is for students to gain more knowledge about geometry and help them gain understanding about how it is applied in physics and in real world applications. Our project allows students to conduct research using the resources they need and allows us to bring a professional into the classroom to talk to the students about real world applications of geometry. Our students will be creating their own kite using geometry and principles of aerodynamics. They will compete to see which group's kite flies the highest, the stability of the kite, and the design of the kite. The competition and project incorporates the math and science concepts that students learn and encourages students to utilize their prior knowledge and research skills. Page 2 of 12

Project Description & Scientific Inquiry First, the students will be introduced to the kite building project and asked to conduct research in order to gain an understanding and basic knowledge of kites. Students will use this information to aid them in the construction of a kite. In this research, the students are to determine materials and cost needed to construct a kite, identify and describe different types/constructions of kites, have an understanding of how kites fly, create a document with group members containing more than two ideas for the kite they want to construct and including the materials/cost, and why. After constructing and testing their kite, the students will be given an opportunity to fix any errors they found in the test run before competing with their fellow classmates. After the competition, the students will then present their findings to the class and reflect on their experiences. By completing the project Ready, Set, FLY! the students will gain an understanding about how science and mathematics are integrated together in the real world. Rationale & Potential Impact This project Ready, Set, FLY! meets several state and national standards for high school level geometry and physics. There are approximately three different types of teachers that can also benefit from this project; physics, art, and history (as well as their students). The physics teacher can go more into aerodynamics, the art teacher can go more into depth about shapes and design, and the history teacher can use this project as an introduction to flight. Our project will increase student understanding by engaging them in the topic by using real world applications and will help students to realize mathematics is used in the real world. For this project, we want the students to be able to solve for missing variables, calculate the perimeter of regular and irregular polygons, calculate the area of regular and irregular polygons, incorporate the concept of area into the aerodynamics of their kite, and use technology to conduct accurate research in order to develop an end product. The project Ready, Set, FLY! will engage students in group collaboration and cooperation toward a common goal as well as indirectly provide opportunities for family moments. Students will have to test their product before the actual competition and although appropriate testing time will be provided by the school, extra testing time is encouraged, which will be a perfect time for parent/student interaction outside the classroom. Many students have not had the opportunity to take part in a project like this, and taking part in something like this will hopefully spark their interest in the subject and hopefully their overall education. Evaluation The projects progress will be monitored by project journals that the students will turn in every Wednesday and Friday. It will also be monitored by the various worksheets and plans that they will be turning in throughout the four weeks of the project. The student s kites will be evaluated during the contest. The kites will be judged on the height of the kite (which the students will be responsible for finding), stability, and design. The stability portion is based on how stable the kite is and if the kite, at the end of flight time, is in one piece. The design portion of the judging is based on the originality of the kite design. Budget 2011 Ready, Set, FLY! Project Class size: 45 Students, Class 1 = 22 students, class 2 = 23 students ITEM/JUSTIFICATION ITEM LOCATION QUANTITY Royal Interactive Teaching Center -Royal Interactive Teaching Center is an interactive smart board that the whole class can enjoy. Not only will this teaching center enhance the Kites are Fun Project, but also every from here on out. Geometric Construct Class Basic Kit ucts.cnsp/index.php ucts.cnsp/index.php PRICE PER ITEM TOTAL COST IN DOLLARS 1 1,150.00 1,150.00 - The Geometric Construct Kit is a kit that includes many measuring devices. These devices include rulers, protractors, measuring tapes, and many more. These are a key portion to the area part of the kite project. Algeblocks Study Group Set - These algebra blocks are a great manipulative for the students. These will work well when going through our project. ucts.cnsp/index.php 1 129.95 129.95 1 59.95 59.95 Page 4 of 12

Metric Trundle Wheel - The metric wheel is a great addition to our project! Part of the project is to find distance. This wheel will be perfect for finding long distances quickly. Geoboard Classroom Kit - The geoboard will be used for our project to help find missing sides and variables. My Math Journal set of 10 -The math journal is a great addition to the project. It allows the students to constantly keep notes on their ideas and progressions for kites. Nylon Sheets (10 Different Colors) - Nylon seems to be a good choice for making a kite. We are asking for 10 different colors so the students can have a wide variety of options to make interesting kites. Box of Assorted Felt Colors - Felt is the second option in which the students can create their kite out of. We feel that this is a good addition to the materials because students need to have the options of materials for their kites. Riverside Color Paper Rolls - Paper is another option for the students. Because paper comes in large rolls, we are asking for many different colors.
