Ingham Hall Refurbishment Complete Ingham Tennis Association is very happy to announce that their Tennis Hall refurbishment is now complete. After hearing about great weddings, birthdays and dances held at the Tennis Hall in yesteryears, the past and present committee decided it was time to get the old place back up to speed. The project has taken a good part of two years to complete, through a series of grants, self funding and volunteer labour. Work has included: lifting the cement kitchen floor and tiling it, installing stainless steel benchtops, a new commercial stove, and chest freezer. Further hall upgrades include the installation of new ceiling vats, lights, fans, split-system air conditioners, fire proof doors, security windows and screens, and new tables. The floor has been sealed for the first time in the hall s history, and the hall has been repainted both inside and out. Even the 1977 grandstands have been restored, with new alloy seating replacing the aging timber. The old timber was recycled into garden box frames. New steel has also been inserted into the 100 seat grandstand.

The hall seats up to 100 guests, and is available for use by the Hinchinbrook community. Bookings can be made by contacting the club on 4776 1030. 4 2011 Townsville Open Championships The Townsville Open was held at Western Suburbs Tennis Club on the 12 th, 13 th and 14 th of August. The tournament attracted a strong field of 140 players, with competitors from far and wide. Players from Adelaide, Sydney, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Melbourne and New Caledonia joined locals in one of the strongest senior fields in the tournament s history. We re very pleased with the response to this year s tournament. It the highest number of entries and the strongest field we ve seen for both the Open Mens and Open Womens Singles events in the last six years, said Graham Wicks, President of Western Suburbs Tennis Club. It soon became evident that the New Caledonians were the ones to beat. The competitors from the French territory in the southwest Pacific won the Open Mens Singles (Nickolas N'Godrela), the Open Womens Singles (Elodie Rogge- Dietrich), and the Open Womens Doubles (Stephanie Diluccio & Elodie Rogge-Dietrich). Senior success for the locals came in the Open Mens Doubles, with Tobias Schneider and David Single taking out the title, defeating former Davis Cup player Peter Tramacchi and Taylor James Smith. Other results include: Open Mixed Doubles Gavin Van Peperzeel & Gina Adams; Special Mens Singles Tim Pilcher; Special Womens Singles Therese Vogel ; Special Mens Doubles Jago Christoffel & Jacob Monoghan; Special Mixed Doubles Geoffrey Birt & Paula Simpson ; A Grade Mens Singles Karel Dubsky; A Grade Womens Singles - Mina Kaess; A Grade Mens Doubles Steve Merker & Darrin Tennent ; A Grade Womens Doubles Maureen Crimeen & Paula Simpson; A Grade Mixed Doubles Harry Bode & Ann Newton; B Grade Mens Singles Colin Abbey; B Grade Womens Singles - Jamie Grace; B Grade Mens Doubles Claude Brent & Stephen Horsley ; B Grade Womens Doubles Roxanne Smith & Sherry Walton; B Grade Mixed Doubles Barry Baker & Sharon McDermott; 18U Boys Singles Jordan Marshall; 18U Boys Consolation Ryan Schwabb; 18U Girls Singles Natalie Rogers; 18U Girls Consolation - Rachel Hughes; 18U Girls Doubles Alessandra Byrne & Montana Byrne; 14U Boys Singles Sam Cornish; 14U Girls Singles Mary Moyo; 14U Girls Doubles Lisa Payne & Mikayla Zahirovic.

Photos from 2011 Townsville Open Championships 5 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Xstrata Social Over 35s Programs Recently, a number of tennis clubs throughout North Queensland have been involved in conducting a Social Over 35s Program at their club. These programs are an initiative of the North Region Regional Assembly, and sponsored by Tennis Queensland and Xstrata. Charters Towers Tennis Club used the opportunity to host a free Social Over 35s Tennis Afternoon on Saturday, 13 th August. The afternoon was designed to encourage adults who have been out of the game for a while, to come and renew their love for tennis. With thirty adults over 35, as well as five younger players attending with their families, it was a fantastic social afternoon. Players enjoyed 4 to 6 sets of 8 games, with opponents chosen by drawing names from a hat. The afternoon of tennis carried on into the evening with a barbq dinner, and included lucky draw prizes. The event was labelled a success, with great feedback received from those involved, and requests for more tennis afternoons of a similar nature.

Photos from the Social Over 35s Tennis Afternoon recently held at Charters Towers Tennis Club 6 Gloucester Tennis Club, located in the beautiful area of Hydeaway Bay, also recently hosted their Xstrata Social Over 35s Program. Held on Friday 5 th August and commencing at 9am, the tennis component of the day was run as an American tournament. Prizes were given for first, second and third highest scores, the oldest player (two of the players were 75, with the average age for the day being 64), the one who made the most noise on the court, and the one who hit the fence the most. According to Gloucester Tennis Club President, Marg Lind, It was a lot of fun! Photos from Gloucester Tennis Club s Xstrata Social Over 35s Day
