The Walks: From ½ mile ambles to 8 mile scenic loops Hinton Parva Walks H1 H2 H3 Bishopstone Walks B1 B2 B3 B4 B5

Walk B1: Bishopstone Village, The Dingle (stream) & Pond A short circular village amble plenty of interest for toddlers too! Easy 1/2 mile 20 min (or 1 hr with toddlers ) On Lead Royal Oak,SN68 Wellies for toddlers in The Dingle A. Turn left after 30yds on at the corner B. Descend to stream and enter The Dingle C. Turn left over bridge (poo sticks perhaps?) Ascend to Church Lane D. Turn left at Church Lane, pass vicarage and climb steps into St Mary s churchyard E. Turn left at top of steps and pass through churchyard with church on your right F. Leave churchyard at gate and enter Church Walk. Continue along Church Walk to road G. Cross main road (Iknield Way) and continue down Oxon Place H. Consider a rest to enjoy the view and feed the ducks at the bench I. Continue along Oxon Place and take left after The Old Bakery. Amble slowly in front of the thatched cottages and spring fed pond comprising The City J. Keeping the pond on your left, branch left after SpringCottage. Continue along path until you reach the main road again with Bishopstone School on your left and Bishopstone Village Hall on your right K. Cross main road (Iknield Way) and continue down Cues Lane to the pub.

Walk B2: Village, The Dingle, Dry Valley & The City A short circular walk downland village, ancient dry valley & spring fed ponds Easy 1 1/4 miles 40 mins Royal Oak,SN68 Bridleway will be muddy when wet A. Turn left after 30yds on at the corner B. Descend to stream; turn right along The Dingle C. Turn left at bridge & ascend to Church Lane D. Ascend Church Lane; turn left at West End Lane T-junction E. Turn left at top of road (Icknield Way) then turn right in 25 yards at the bridleway F. Follow bridleway, pass a track joining on the left. Continue along BW to enter the dry valley (Smiths Bottom) at a gate G. Turn left after gate and then left again through kissing gate after 20 yards. Continue down valley to kissing gate below terrace (strip lynchett) H. Note spring/pond to your left and follow path through trees to track. Continue down track to road (Nell Hill). I. Descend road, take left at corner after Rose Villa J. Descend path & branch left behind thatched house to enter The City (thatched cottages surrounding spring fed pond). Turn right at path junction K. Keeping the pond on your left, branch left after Rose Cottage. Continue along path until you reach the main road again with Bishopstone School on your left and Bishopstone Village Hall on your right. Cross the road into Cues Lane and back to pub

Walk B3: Bishopstone, Dry Valleys & The Ridgeway A beautiful circular walk downland village, ancient dry valleys & The Ridgeway Moderate 3 miles 1 hour Royal Oak,SN68 Bridleway will be muddy when wet A. Turn left after 30yds on at the corner B. Descend to stream; turn right along The Dingle; turn left at bridge & ascend to Church Lane C. Ascend Church Lane; turn left at West End Lane T-junction; turn left at top of road (Icknield Way) then turn right at BW D. Follow bridleway, pass a track joining on left and continue to enter the dry valley (Smiths Bottom) at a gate E. Follow fence on RHS, turn right at stile into adjoining dry valley (The Lynchetts) F. Ascend the long steepening dry valley via to cross over a stile at top on the left G. Follow RHS field boundary to Ridgeway H. Turn left & follow Ridgeway for ½ mile I. At foot of hill turn left (BW) at X-roads and descend dry valley, pass through gates at the centre and at valley end J. Enter field with terraces (Lynchetts) on right. Ascend two tiers of Lynchetts on sheep tracks and follow second grassy terrace to gate to road at the end. K. Descend road, take left at corner after Rose Villa L. Descend path & branch left behind thatched house, turn left at path junction curving right around the back of the ponds. Turn right at Oxon place, right at main road (Iknield Way) & left back to pub (Cues Lane)

Walk B4: Bishopstone, Wessex Downs & The Ridgeway Another beautiful circular walk village, downlands, The Ridgeway & dry valley Moderate 5 miles 1 ½ hours Royal Oak,SN68 Potential for cattle in Eastbrook Valley A. Turn left after 30yds on at the corner B. Descend to stream; turn right along The Dingle; turn left at bridge & ascend to Church Lane C. Ascend Church Lane; turn left at West End Lane T-junction; turn right at top of road (Icknield Way). Continue past Manor Farm and Watley s orchard and take Permissive footpath on left at kissing gate. D. Ascend for a mile to a stile and turn left on The Ridgeway E. Descend Ridgeway, pass BW (right) & Ridgeway Farm (left) to road (Nell Hill) F. Cross road and continue on Ridgeway. Turn left at signposts to Permissive Path & Eastbrook Valley G. Follow along field boundary on right to stile. H. Descend dry valley diagonally left on and follow valley to gate at foot of valley on left I. Pass though gate and continue down track to main road (Iknield Way) J. Turn left along road and turn right after 100 yards along Mount Pleasant K. Follow Mount pleasant curving left to rejoin the main road (Iknield Way) and turn right. Pass the High Street and turn right into Cues Lane and back to the pub.

Walk B5: Bishopstone, The Ridgeway & Idstone A longer classic downland circular walk villages, downs, Ridgeway & green lane Moderate to Strenuous 7 miles 2 hours Royal Oak,SN68 Potential for cattle in Idstone pastures A. Turn left after 30yds on at the corner B. Descend to stream; turn right along The Dingle; turn left at bridge & ascend to Church Lane C. Ascend Church Lane; turn left at West End Lane T-junction; turn right at top of road (Icknield Way). Continue past Manor Farm and Watley s orchard and take Permissive footpath on left at kissing gate. D. Ascend for a mile to a stile and turn left on The Ridgeway E. Descend Ridgeway, pass BW & Ridgeway Farm (left) to road (Nell Hill). Cross road & continue on Ridgeway. Ignore signposts to Permissive Path & Eastbrook Valley. Continue uphill and turn left on paved road (Idstone Hill). F. Descend Idstone Hill to road junction. G. Turn left & immediate right into Idstone. Follow road bearing left. At T-junction turn right & then left on at Lower Idstone farm. H. Pass though gate & head diagonally right to corner of hedges. Follow right hedge to end of field to a gated stile across a stream I. Follow left field boundary to gated stile. Enter green lane & continue to road. J. Cross road & enter field at stile. Cross field to stile at road (High St). Turn right & immediate left into Cues Lane. Follow Cues Lane to pub car park.

Walk H1: Hinton, The Lane & The Vale A fine circular walk in The Vale Hinton Village, The Lane & Earlscourt Manor Moderate 4.5 miles 1 ½ hours Hinton Village Green SN4 0DW Muddy after rain A. Park on the street near the village green & St Swithun s Church. Keep the church on your right and follow the road down past the Manor. When the road turns left continue straight on to The Lane. A. Continue on the lane for 1 ¾ miles. The paved lane turns into a track. As the track peters out go ahead on a BW signed Horpit & Bourton. Before Hinton Marsh Farm take the to the left signed Horpit B. Pass through two fields & gated stiles and continue on over a stile to a gravel path. The path becomes paved and passes Earlscote Manor. On a right hand bend after 2 red brick farm houses take the signposted path Signed Hinton Parva. C. Follow the line of the sign & after ¼ mile follow the hedgeline (on your left) to a stile. 50 yards ahead cross another stile & follow a lovely hidden path in the trees. Continue on this path through fields to a track leading to Home Farm. Pass through the farm via 3 stiles and walk up to the road. D. Turn left and descend the road through Hinton Parva for ½ mile to City Corner E. At City Corner take the path straight ahead (it starts slightly to your left). Continue across the fields & pass through two stiles to emerge back into the village by the old chapel F. Turn right and re-trace steps back to St Swithun s Church and your car.

Walk H2: Coombes, Gallops, Downs, Ridgeway & Hinton A lovely circular walk The Coombes, gallops, The Ridgeway & downland return Moderate 5 miles 1 ½ hours Hinton Village Hall SN4 0DH Sheep potentially in Coombes & horses on gallops A. Leave the car park at the gate to The Coombes - A National Trust maintained dry valley A. Ascend The Coombes (National Trust) keeping to the rising path that tracks along the left hedge line B. At the top of The Coombes enter the Badgerstown gallops at a gate. Being mindful of the horses pass through the gallops to the road C. Cross the road and ascend path along the left hand field boundary to The Ridgeway. D. Turn left along The Ridgeway. Pass on the left first a paved road and then a farner s track marked Private and turn left at the first of two stiles that are in close proximity E. Descend the between the two fields. Continue on path all the way to the gate on the road at the edge of Bishopstone F. Turn left along the road then continue uphill left at the Bourton Road junction. After 100 yards ascend steps on the right to a gate to the field. G. Cross field diagonally left, pass through 2 gated stiles to Hinton Parva village. H. Passing the graveyard on your right continue on road straight ahead to small village green I. Take path on the left of the three thatched cottages on the far side of the green. Follow path to road. J. Turn right at the road and then left at Village Hall to the car park.

Walk H3: Coombes, Gallops & Peak Downs A lovely long scenic circular walk The Coombes, gallops, Peak Downs & return Strenuous 8 miles 3 hours Hinton Village Hall SN4 0DH Sheep in Coombes, horses on gallops & cattle @ Downs Barn A. Enter The Coombes at gate from car park A. Ascend The Coombes (National Trust). Keep to the rising path on the left hedge line. At the top of The Coombes enter Badgerstown gallops at a gate. Being mindful of the horses pass through the gallops to the road B. Cross the road and ascend path along the left hand field boundary to The Ridgeway. Cross The Ridgeway and follow path along ridgeline until road junction (near M4 bridge) C. Turn left and walk down road. Turn left at track leading to Downs Barn D. Follow track. Pass through gated stile at first cattle grid, head for gated stile beyond & right of second cattle grid. Turn right on path. At col turn left along field boundary & head for lone tree below Lammy Down. E. Contour around Lammy down then left on track to The Ridgeway and turn left uphill. G. Descend the between the two fields. Continue on path all the way to the gate on the road at the edge of Bishopstone H. Turn left along the road then continue uphill left at the Bourton Road junction. After 100 yards ascend steps on the right to a gate to the field. I. Cross field diagonally left, pass through 2 gated stiles to Hinton Parva village. Passing the graveyard on your right continue on road straight ahead to small village green. Take path on the left of the three thatched cottages on the far side of the green. Follow path to road. J. Turn right at the road and then left at Village Hall to the car park.
