August 2016 Commodore s Corner Joe Lindholm Joe Lindholm cjlindholm@ameritech.net 630-817-7887 Well, what going on with your FBYC Commodore?? Inside this Issue Vice Commodore 3 Rear Commodore 5 Maritime 6 Docking 7 Calendar 8 Birthdays 9 Store 10 As most of you know, last year I was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin s Lymphoma that took up a good part of my year. We thought it was gone forever, but in June my blood tests were not right and a PT Scan showed an 8MM nodule in my right lung that contained large B cell lymphoma. Damn It!!! I now have completed one round of Chemo Therapy that starts on Monday thru Thursday for 6 hours each day, then a two week break and then another Monday thru Thursday treatment. On the off weeks I have hydration on Monday, Wednesday and Friday for 1 ½ hours. After two or three rounds of these treatments I will have another PT Scan to determine if the Chemo worked. This Chemo renders my immune system weak so that is why you have not seen much of me lately. If the Chemo does its job, I then will go to UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville for two weeks for some type of Stem Cell therapy. Don t know what I would do without my Patty. I miss you all and hope to see you at the Disco Night August 18 th if at all possible. Page 2 Commodore s Corner Joe Lindholm - Continued Please, if you have signed up for an event and you cannot make it, give the lead for the event notice you will not be there. This causes undue problems for both the lead and the venue. Sponges grow in the ocean. That just kills me. I wonder how much deeper the ocean would be if that didn't happen.

Page 3 Vice Commodore John Green jag50@bellsouth.net 386-517-6760 Thanks again Rich Franco and Tom Donaghy for serving as the leads on the parade. We had to make some last minute changes to our float but Commodore Lindholm did an excellent job of securing a trailer to tow our members and distinguished guests George and Martha Washington. George (Kal) and Martha (Linda) Washington looked very much the part. After the parade we met at the Beachfront Grille for a social. It was different in the fact we were spread out over the entire restaurant but everyone seemed to have a great time. Ken Miller and the commodore responsible for securing the trailer. Our July meeting featured our Ice Cream Social. Thanks to Michelle Kelly and her Scoopers for taking the lead and serving 13 containers of ice cream. It was also one of our shortest meeting in recent times, adjourning at 7:32. Remember there is no general meeting in August. Instead there will be a Disco Dance at the church hall on August 18 th. There will be music by Traces of Gold and a catered dinner. Doors open at 5:45 with dinner at 6 and music beginning at 6:30. We have over 70 members signed up to attend. We still have room for more so bring a friend. Contact one of the leads, Jeanne Meyer or Cindy Franco for more information. We have two new events. The first is a social at the Golden Lion on Tuesday September 13 th starting at 5PM. We haven t been to the Lion for a social in several years so it should be well attended. Also coming up is the Pine Lakes Golf outing in October. There are sign-up sheets for both. Give me a call if you need more information. Continued on next Page

Page 4 Vice Commodore John Green jag50@bellsouth.net 386-517-6760 The September General meeting is our chili cook-off led by Fred and Barb Depietro. If you would like to participate as either a cook or judge, give them a call. I know with the heat it s hard to be thinking Christmas but our party will be December 9 th. Mark your calendar. More info will be coming soon. Happy Boating, John

Page 5 Rear Commodore - Dee Cocchiola deecocchiola@gmail.com 386-445-9821 It s summer. It s damned hot! But we re still having fun. Our ice cream meeting did help to cool us off a little but it s still prudent to keep out of the direct sun and wear sunscreen, even while under your boat s bimini. Oh and keep pets in the house. They suffer, too. I want to thank everyone who paid their dues on time. We did have five member(ships) who did not renew this year, leaving us with 141 total members. Our waiting list has three potential new memberships, all with boats. If we add all three new memberships off the waiting list (five individual members), we ll have 146 total members close to full strength. Of interest, last year our board put a moratorium on new non-boater memberships and since then our desired percentage of boaters has held steady. Of 72 current memberships, 45 have boats, plus 10 memberships grandfathered in as boat owners. Combined, they give us a boat owner percentage of 76%, right about on target. If we add those three new boater memberships, we re looking even better as a yacht club. So, enjoy the dog days of summer. Stay cool round the pool and get ready for our upcoming activities. Remember, NO MEETING IN AUGUST! See you all in September. 72 memberships Number of boats 45 Grandfather boats 10 Number of members 141 Percentage.76

Page 6 Michael Triano and Alan Hendry, Fleet Captains In July we went spent two nights at Loggerhead Marina in Daytona Beach with a lunch at Caribbean Jack s Restaurant on the 11th. There were four boats for two nights, one for one night and one day boater. It was hot and the pool was not as much relief as we would have liked. The water was warm enough to soft boil an egg. That said, it stayed full of FBYC members most of the time. Lunch was good but a bit disappointing. There were 51 people signed up and only 32 actually attended. This makes the club look bad to the restaurant that added staff based on our information. Please, in the future, if you sign up and can t make it please notify the lead as soon as possible. We will plan on sending a blast prior to events in the future. Thank you Mike Triano for a nice event. The following is a list of Maritime events we have planned for the next three months. Please mark your calendars for these and sign up at the meetings for any you would like to attend. August 11-13th will be a trip to Hammock Beach Marina. Fred Ciaburri is the lead. Hammock Beach Marina is the new marina across the Intracoastal from the Palm Coast Marina. There is a swimming pool at the condo and a nice captains lounge. In addition, there is a free on demand shuttle bus that will take marina guests to the restaurants and pools at the Hammock Resort. Boaters will need to contact the marina to make reservations at 386-597-5031. Be sure to let them know you are with the FBYC group as they are putting everyone on the E dock. If you would like to come by car and socialize we are planning to get together in the captains lounge at 5:00 pm on Thursday Aug 11. BYOB and a snack or dish to share. Contact Fred Ciaburri if you are planning to attend by car at fredciaburri@yahoo.com. Friday Sept. 23 is the Astor Pontoon boat trip. John Yetter is the lead for the event. There will be 10 members per boat, price is $22 each. We will be departing the rental facility at 11:00 am and returning at 3:00 pm, followed by a get together at the Blackwater Inn. Boat Location, Castaways on the River 25131 Blackwater Lane, Astor, FL 32102. Restaurant Location, Blackwater Inn 55716 Front St., Astor, FL 32102. October 6-9th at New Smyrna Beach City Marina. Alan Hendry and Fred Ciaburri have the lead. This will be a three night event limited to 9 boats due to transient capacity at the marina. On Saturday Oct. 8 there will be a car show on Canal St, from 4-8 pm. There will be an art show event that runs the entire weekend. There are currently our max of 9 signed up. If you are interested in going but did not sign up contact Alan or Fred and we will put you on a waiting list in case we get any cancelations. We will look for a cool weather day in September for a raft up.

Page 7 Docking, What Not To Do On a recent trip to St. Augustine by several FBYC members we noticed the boat below. The beautiful American Tug had its stern completely out of the water on port side! How could this happen? It was probably a simple case of distraction for a moment. As many of you know the St. Augustine Municipal Marina has floating docks. What you may or may not have noticed it there are quite a few slips with fixed pilings between them. When tying up to a floating dock you should snug your lines up fairly tight to the dock with fenders between the boat and the dock. In this case the Captain did tie up nice and snug to the floating dock. He apparently didn't recognize it as a fixed piling or it just didn't register in his brain at that moment and tied up fairly snug to it as well. There is about a five foot tide change in St. Augustine. After tying up at or near high tide it was not long before the stern was out of the water. The tide still had another two feet to drop before it would be low tide. We notified the marina staff, they attempted but could not loosen the stern line with all the weight on it. They then notified the owner who asked them to to cut the line which they did. The boat came down with a splash and the only visible damage was to the cleat and cleat mounting area.
