The benefits are beginning to show T he advantage of having our new indoor shooting range and being able to shoot any time is beginning to have its effect on our members. Standards of shooting are on the up, as shown by improved scores and winners at competitions. Members are also reaping the benefit of coaching being available throughout the year, instead of just during the summer and more and more people are now asking for help to improve their archery. If you are unable to come to one of the Tuesday night session, please ask one of the coaches if they can help you at another time. Diane Clarke, Chairman Log onto our Web Site at www.bowmen.co.uk or www.pendleandsamlesbury.org.uk Charity Shoot T he Club was pleased to welcome Martin Mycock, who was travelling from club to club to raise money for Help 4 Heroes. His mission was to shoot at as many clubs as he could during his 3 week journey and encourage the members of each club to make a donation. Club Chairman Di Clarke was pleased to welcome Martin and 14 members joined him to shoot a National or Warwick round. A few other members came along, too, to give support and 81.67 was raised for the charity. Champions W e are proud to have a few Lancashire champions at P & S. Firstly Wendy Aubrey became Ladies Recurve champion, then Lewis Imeson and Charlotte Hempsall followed suit at the junior championships a couple of weeks later. A couple of weeks later, Lewis, Charlotte and Martha Blinkhorn went off to the Junior Nationals at Lilleshall. Martha suffered badly from hay fever, but held her own in the Bristol 2. Lewis had set himself the goal of achieving over 1000 for both the Metric 3 and the Bristol 2, which he did. Charlotte just wanted to improve her already impressive scores and she did just that in the process of winning the bronze medals on both days. Congratulations To Wendy Aubrey, who has been selected to shoot for England at the British Target Championships in August. Boost Course S ome new members, who had completed their beginner course in March, were able to take part in a new course, instigated by Archery GB. The members learned how to tune their new bows and put on a nocking point (see picture), repair arrows and strings, develop their shooting and take part in a competition. The coaches intend to run a similar course in the future and hope to open it to all members. On Target During the summer, we have been taking part in a competition organised by Archery GB On Target team. The competition involved shooting at 50 metres against another team. The team comprised 2 compound and 2 recurve archers, preferably a male and female archer in each pair. Our first match involved a visit from Saxon Archers (Thornton Cleveleys) in April. Saxon only had one compound archer, so put in a bare bow instead. They also only had one lady, who had never shot further than 20 yards. It turned into an excellent development day for Saxon, but needless to say that our team of Wendy Aubrey, Gary Barnes, Jane Cunningham and John Holmes won in style. In the next round we played host to Bruntwood Archers from Cheshire. This proved to be a much closer affair, but Wendy Aubrey, Gary Barnes, John Holmes and Deirdre Stepto came out victorious. In the next round we received a bye, so head straight to the quarter finals, against Derwent Bowmen (Derbyshire). This match is scheduled for the 9 th August and we wish our team the best of luck. Novice Tournament O n the 6 th September we will be holding our 5 th Annual Novice tournament. Entitled the John Allison Shoot, this is held in memory of John, a judge and member of the Bowmen of Pendle & Samlesbury, who died in 2011. It is open to any archer, including Club members, who have been in archery for less than 2 years and who have not yet achieved 2 nd Class. Entry forms are available in the clubhouse, or from Di Clarke (di@bowmen.co.uk). On the day of the shoot, we will need help from other club members to help with running the shoot car park marshalling, field party, scoring, refreshments etc. if you are free and willing to help, please see Di. Late News Wendy for England! N ot only did Wendy Aubrey shoot for England, (who won), she was placed 6 th at the British Target Championships. Well done! More good news from the Hempsall hot line whilst shooting at Wetherby, on the 25 th & 26 th July, Charlotte has claimed a National Record for a Double Bristol 5, with a score of 2479. Well done! Charity Shoot Update Its two months on from the Help for Heroes Archery Tour so I thought I d give you a quick update. The cheque for all the sponsorship form money has been received and cashed by HfH. There have also been one or two late contributions so the fund now stands at 4259. I m leaving the fund open for now as I ve written a letter to Archery GB magazine. Hopefully it ll get published in the September mag and there might be a chance of a few more donations. If they don t publish it then I ll close the fund and call it a day I ve eased my way back into my archery and have just sent in an entry for 2 days of the Cheshire Tri Clout competition. I m wondering if I might run into a familiar face or two from the tour while I m there. Martin Mycock Page 3
