DELIVERING THE DREAM Dacorum School Sports Network Newsletter Volume 6 Issue 3 Summer 2018 In this newsletter you can read in more detail the work that DSSN Member Schools have been doing this term. You will also find enclosed details of our School Games Competitions and some information from our sponsors. I wish all of you moving onto new schools luck with your new job, and hope that everyone has a relaxing summer break. Thanks for all your support in 2018-2019 Its been a good year. Clare Foundation Stage Olympics On Monday 25th June and Friday 29th June Primary schools came together to take part in the Foundation Stage Olympics. On both days schools attended an AM or PM session, all pupils took part in an opening ceremony where they celebrated the country they had chosen to represent. Schools rotated around the events which included, egg and spoon race, space hopper race, stepping stones and bean bag balance and throws. Students were allocated a certain amount of time at each station to try and collect as many points as possible for their team. Scores were tallied at the end of each session to find an overall winner. Bronze, Silver and Gold Certificates were given out to schools who came 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Well done to Kings Langley RAI, Boxmoor and Grove Road Bowen for winning the 3 different events. KS1 Stage Olympics On Friday 25th May and Thursday 14th June Primary schools came together to take part in the KS1 Multi Olympics Festival. Pupils participated in various activities including, Football shoot out, relay races, Boccia, Kurling and much more. In total 687 pupils attended one of the events held across two days either in a morning or afternoon session. Pupils rotated around the activities, being scored at each station. Leaders from Kings Langley, Adeyfield and Ashlyns supported at the events. The events were opened with schools showing off their Country that they were representing, with flags and chants being performed. Schools even had the opportunity to meet our Dacorum Dragon who wished them luck in their activities. All schools came back together at the end of the day for a closing ceremony; certificates were awarded for Bronze, Silver and Gold placements. Partnership Competitions & News (cont.) Year 3/4 Mini Olympics DSSN hosted two Mornings of year 3/4 Mini Olympics this year. On Tuesday 12th June, 5 schools attended Adeyfield Secondary school and on Thursday 28th June 5 schools attended Ashlyns school. At both events pupils took part in an opening ceremony where they performed a Mexican wave as well as waving their countries flags they made at school. The event consisted of 5 activities, Football, Highfive Netball, Mini Tennis, Athletics and Boccia. Each activity received Bronze, Silver or Gold and then all 5 activities were totalled together to get an overall wining school. On the morning of 12th June at Adeyfield, Brockswood came 3rd, Hobletts Manor 2nd and Kings Langley 1st. On the morning of 28th June at Ashlyns, Wesfield came 3rd, Grove Road 2nd and Nash Mills 1st. Well done to all schools who attended one of the events. Thank you to both Adyfield and Ashylns for letting us use your facilities and sports leaders. Year 5 Mini Olympics This summer term DSSN has hosted two Mornings of year 5 Mini Olympics. On Tuesday 10th July, 7 schools attended Cavendish School and on Wednesday 11th July, 4 schools attended Ashlyns School. At both events pupils took part in an opening and closing ceremony celebrating the County they were representing. The event consisted of 5 different activities, Tennis, Table Tennis, Boccia, Basketball and Athletics. Each activity received Bronze, Silver or Gold and then all 5 activities were totalled together to get an overall winning school. On the morning of 10th July at Cavendish, Nash Mills came 3rd, Great Gaddesden 2nd and Kings Langley 1st. On the morning of 11th July at Ashlyns Thomas Coram A came 3rd, Greenway 2nd and Potten End 1st. Thank you and well done to all teams for taking part. Thank you also to both Cavendish and Ashylns for letting us use your facilities and sports leaders. DSSN Awards Night 2018! This years awards were presented by Anna Mcnuff. Anna completed a one woman's 3,000 kilometre running adventure through the wilds of New Zealand. Anna was a very inspirational speaker making the audience laugh with her very bold and colourful pants of perspective. Anna went on to present certificates and trophies to winners and runners up in the various awards. Some of our winners are listed in the table. A huge congratulations to all who were nominated and to the top three shortlisted in each category. Thank you also to all our Dacorum Sports Apprentices for helping to set up and serve drinks at the beginning of the evening. Competitions Continued Partnership Competitions & News (cont.) Tri Golf Festivals Year 3. Week commencing Monday 30th April DSSN held three tri golf competitions to establish the over all winner of Dacorum. Competitions were held at Cavendish, JFK and Ashlyns Secondary schools. The event involved rotating around a carousel of various tri golf activities including, Finders Keepers, Dominos, Bullseye, Splashdown, Putting Green and many more. All teams who took part in the competition had a brilliant time and really improved their tri golf skills throughout the duration of the event. Thank you to Cavendish, JFK and Ashlyns for allowing us to use your facilities and Sports Leaders! Year 3 Tag Rugby Festival On Thursday 17th May 12 schools from across the district arrived at Camelot Rugby Club for an afternoon of a noncompetitive rugby A total of 39 teams from our 12 district schools took part in the tournament. All teams played exceptionally well showing great sportsmanship throughout. Thank you to Kings Langley Sports Leaders for refereeing games and to Saracens for helping to run a successful event. Bronze and Health Leader Celebration On Wednesday 25th April DSSN held a celebration afternoon at The Cavendish School for this years Bronze Ambassadors and Health/ Activity Leaders. During the afternoon students shared all the fantastic things they have been doing in their schools since they have been given the role in October. Students also took the time to reflect on what they had learnt and developed as leaders. A huge well done to all of our district Bronze Ambassadors and Health/Activity Leaders. Good luck in your secondary schools, and remember to tell them about your leadership qualities! Football League Finals On Monday 23rd April, Cavendish School hosted the year 6 football League finals for boys and girls. St Pauls played Broadfield in the boys final and Greenway Played Westfield in the girls final. Both matches were played to an extremely high standard with players demonstrating skill and talent throughout. Congratulations to St Pauls and Greenway For winning their games and securing the victories. Thank you to referees from Hemel Hempstead School who stepped up to the plate and done a great job. Rounders Tournament This years Rounders Tournament was held on Monday 16th July at The Cavendish School. We were initially expecting 16 teams to attend however with a few drop outs 12 teams ended up competing. Teams were split into 4 pools where teams played each other delivering 15 good balls each. After all pool games were played the quarter finals took place followed by the semi finals. Reaching the semi finals were Bovingdon A V Two Waters and Bovingdon B V Thomas Coram. After two well played games Bovingdon A and Bovingdon B reached the final. With a great final game Bovingdon A were crowned winners, Bovingdon B came 2nd and Two Waters came 3rd. Competitions continued Partnership Competitions & News (cont.) Netball Tournament On Friday 6th June, DSSN ran the district Netball Tournament at The Cavendish School. 13 schools took part with a total of 17 teams. Schools were spilt into pools and played each other. Winners for each group then went onto the Quarter Finals, and then Semi Finals were played. A close final was fought between Grove Road and Bovingdone with Grove Road coming out victorious on the day. The event was a Play Leaders and MSA training On Monday 21st May a number of staff members from schools across Dacorum attended a morning session on Play Leader training. During the session staff gained a clear understanding of what a play leader is and why/how they are beneficial to schools at break and lunchtimes. Staff also gained knowledge of ways to train their play leaders ensuring they know how to support and mentor them back at school. In the PM session students joined their MSAs and took part in the Play Leader training, they learnt important values and skills that is needed to fulfil their new role of a play leader. They also took part in a practical session using play ground equipment to create fun, safe and active games that they could in- huge success with lots of parents and friends as spectators. Thank you to all the umpires, apprentices and volunteers that made the event happen. Netball League Final On Thursday 19th April, The Cavendish School hosted the year 6 Netball League finals. Well done to Bovingdon Academy and Hobbs Hill Wood who reached the final after playing all their league games. troduce to children back at school during either lunch or break times. Dacorum School Games Level 2 This terms School Games competitions have mainly focused on Primary schools with winning schools of these events taking part in the Hertfordshire School Games County finals on Friday 6th July. Competitions included Tri Golf, Mini Tennis Red, Mixed Kwik Cricket, Girls Kwik Cricket, Quicksticks, Inclusive Archery, Inclusive Golf and Cricket, Change4Life Celebration. Girls Kwik Cricket The Girls Kwik Cricket event took place on Wednesday 13 th June at Hemel Hempstead Cricket Club. Nine teams took part from across Dacorum, games were played in two pools across three pitches. The winners of the Semifinals Yewtree and Greenway A went through to the final. At the end of the game, Greenway A were crowned Dacorum winners with Yewtree taking second place. Due to other commitments Greenway were unable to represent Dacorum on 26 June at the County finals, yewtree went as runners up in their place. A massive thank you to Kings Langley leaders for umpiring all games that took part throughout the day. Thank you also to Hemel Cricket Club for hosting the event. Well done to all teams who took part! Mixed Kwik Cricket The Mixed U11 competition was held on Tuesday 19 th June at Leverstock Green Cricket Club. Thirteen teams entered the competition, games were played in four pools across four pitches. All games were extremely close with the quarter finals having to be worked out based on the amount of runs each team accumulated throughout the day. Well done to all teams for their teamwork and determination for the duration of the event. The final took place between St Pauls and Greenway, after what was an extremely close match St Pauls were victorious and through to the county finals on the 6 th July. Thank you to The Cavendish School young leaders for all their help and support on the day. Thank you to Leverstock Green Cricket club for hosting the event. Inclusive Tri Golf and Cricket On Wednesday 20 th June, South Hill and Thomas Coram attended our Inclusive Tri Golf and Cricket event held at The Cavendish School. The event was for students on the SEND register or those with hearing/ visual impairments. Students spent the morning taking part in 8 different tri golf activities working in pairs alongside a Cavendish young leader. The activities consisted of putting, chipping and target scoring, pupils had a great morning! In the afternoon all students and leaders took part in a cricket game called Rapid Fire. Students were placed on a batting or fielding team and along with support from the young leaders they played some fantastic games of Rapid Fire. All 14 children who attended the day worked so hard and really enjoyed themselves. We hope to see all students at the county games on 6 th July where they will take part in these events alongside other students in the county. A massive thank you and well done to The Cavendish School young leaders the event wouldn t have been the same without your support and fantastic leadership..mini Tennis Red On Wednesday 23 rd May six teams took part in the Mini Red competition held at Leverstock Green Tennis Club. Kings Langley Secondary school leaders helped to run the event, scoring each court and umpiring the games. All teams played really well with their Tennis knowledge and skills improving throughout the competition. Kings Langley Primary were crowned winners taking home gold medals! They were unable to attend the County final, Brockswood represented Dacorum instead. Well done to all teams who attended. Thank you to Kings Langley leaders for helping to run the event and Leverstock Green tennis club for hosting! Quicksticks On Wednesday 6 th June The Cavendish School hosted this year s Quicksticks competition. Teams played matches within their pools with winners going forward into semis and finals. Greenway won the competition and will be heading to the County finals on 6 th July. Well done all teams who took part. Change4Life Festival In the afternoon of Thursday 21 st June three schools attend our yr 3/4 Change4life celebratory festival. The festival celebrated the children s success and hard work throughout the year in attending their Change4life club at school. All three schools took part in a carousel of 6 different Change4life activities ran by young leaders from Adeyfield Secondary School. Pupils took part in team building activities, target games, circuit training, seated football and skipping challenges. A fun filled afternoon was had by everyone! Thank you to Adeyfield Young leaders for their support and enthusiasm throughout the festival. 6 @DSSN42

School Games Finals Herts School Games Finals 6th July 2018 On Friday 6th July, teams from across Dacorum travelled to Oaklands College in St Albans to perform at the Level 3 School Games Competition. Events included Mixed Kwick Cricket, Quicksticks, Mini Tennis, Tri Golf, Speed Stacking, Inclusive Tri Golf, Inclusive Rapid Fire, Athletics and Change4Life Carousel. The event started with an opening ceremony, where students heard from an Athlete role model and watched a fantastic dance performance! from St Albert the Great RC Primary School. Children were then dispersed to their relevant areas to start their competitions. All teams did extremely well and came up against some tough competition on the day. Well done to everyone for taking part. Especially to St Pauls, Bovingdon and those who were part of our inclusive team who added to our medal table with a Gold in Tri golf a silver in Kwik Cricket and a second silver in inclusive Tri Golf.
