In addition to their six-game improvement during the pre-conference season, the are also off to an improved start in league play at 2-3. Last year, SDSU opened its conference season 0-4 before getting its first MWC win versus UNLV in game No. 5. The second win did not come until league game No. 7, a 68-58 upset of Colorado State in Cox Arena. This Kind of Trey Would Be Bad San Diego State enters the week at 10-8 (2-3 MWC, t-5th) after falling to travel partner UNLV, 82-41, in its only game last week. Coupled with their loss last week at New Mexico, it is the third time this season that the have tasted defeat in back-to-back games. SDSU will be out to avoid its first three-game losing streak of the season Thursday night versus Wyoming. Put This Weekend In The Gotta-Have-It Category For SDSU How crucial is this weekend s game for the? At 2-3 in Mountain West Conference play, San Diego State s hopes of an upper division league finish just may hinge on coming away with a sweep this weekend. Following their game with Colorado State Saturday, the return to Cox Arena just twice more this season, playing five of their final seven regular-season games of the year on the road. Playing for.500 in League A win Thursday against Wyoming would improve San Diego State to 3-3 in Mountain West Conference play on the year, marking the first time the have been.500 after six games under head coach Barb Smith. The last time SDSU was.500 or better after six conference games was during the 1996-97 campaign when the it opened league play 6-0. About Wyoming Much like San Diego State of a year ago, the Wyoming (9-9, 1-4 MWC) have suffered its share of significant personnel losses in 2000-01. All-Mountain West performer Carrie Bacon suffered a preseason injury and is redshirting the season, while leading scorer Carly Stucky was lost to a knee injury just six games into the year. Still, the Cowgirls have preserved and at 9-9 are two-games ahead of where they were last year at this time. All but one of those nine wins have come at home, including the Cowgirls first league win last Saturday against Air Force, 58-54, ending a five-game skid. About The San Diego State will have revenge on its mind Thursday night after dropping both meetings with Wyoming a year ago. The losses were just the fourth and fifth, respectively, in the series for SDSU, which has won 12 of the previous 17 meetings. The are 7-1 all time versus the Cowgirls in games played on Montezuma Mesa with the lone loss coming last season. We ve Got This In Common San Diego State and Wyoming rank tied for second in the Mountain West in steals at 9.5 per game. The two teams also rank seventh and eighth in the league in turnovers per game. Wyoming, at 19.6 is seventh, SDSU, at 19.8, is eighth. Set Speed Limit at 65 Sixty-five points could be the key number to watch for in Thursday s game. When Wyoming scores 65 points or more, the Cowgirls are 7-2. However, Wyoming is just 2-7 when being held under 65 points. San Diego State is 10-2 this season when it holds its opponent to fewer than 65 points. Have Edge In Common Opponents San Diego State and Wyoming have faced two common non-conference opponents this season Northern Arizona and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Cowgirls split their two games, falling at NAU, 77-55, and defeating TAMUCC, 72-70, in Laramie. The defeated both teams, knocking off the Lumberjacks at home, 58-50, before picking up a 67-59 victory in Corpus Christi. In conference play, each team defeated Air Force and fell to both New Mexico and Utah. San Diego State defeated BYU, 63-61, in Cox Arena, while Wyoming lost to the Cougars in Provo, 78-57.

Last Meeting with the Pokes San Diego State led by as many as nine points in the first half but couldn t sustain the momentum after the break, falling 63-55 in Laramie. SDSU trailed 54-53 following a Jamey Cox three pointer with 3:07 to play, however, the Cowgirls outscored the 7-2 over the final 2:47, including four free throws by gamehigh scorer Carrie Bacon (19 points), to hold on for the win. Cox and Kacee Wheeler led a balanced SDSU scoring sheet with 12 points each. Last Meeting in San Diego Wyoming's Carrie Bacon led all scorers with 24 points and the Cowgirls shot redhot 56 percent from the field to defeat the, 78-71, in Cox Arena in the first meeting between the two teams last year. It was Wyoming s first-ever win over the in San Diego. San Diego State trailed 40-31 at the break and by as many as 14 points in the second half before rallying to get back in the game. Down 65-57 at the 7:02 mark, SDSU got back-to-back three-pointers from Jamey Cox and Anita Bundage to pull within five points. Atim Otii and Mary Apiafi hit consecutive lay-ups to pull the with in a single possession with just over a minute to play. However, the could get no closer as Wyoming connected on 6-of-8 free throws in the final minute to thwart the comeback bid. Cox finished with seven three-pointers and led four in double figures with 23 points. Noting SDSU s vs. UNLV San Diego State lost for just the third time this season at home and only the third time in its last 10 games overall Saturday, falling to UNLV, 82-41. The 41 points were its fewest of the season. SDSU also shot a season-low 29.2 percent from the field and committed a season-high 34 turnovers. The 41-point loss was SDSU s worse of the season and its biggest margin of defeat since losing to BYU by 41 in the opening round of last year s Mountain West Conference Tournament. UNLV shot a blistering 56 percent from the field. It is the first time this season that an Aztec opponent has managed to shoot better than 50 percent for an entire game. San Diego State was improved on the boards, however, hauling down 35 caroms on the night, including 19 on the offensive glass. The 19 o-boards were their second-most this season. SDSU cleared a season-best 20 offensive rebounds vs. NAU. The also picked off 10 steals for the game. It is the seventh time this season that SDSU has recorded double-digit steals, but the first time since grabbing 10 versus Cal back on Dec. 22. Senior Shannon Lee finished with a team-high 10 points and was the only Aztec to post double figures in scoring. It is just the fourth time in her career that she has led SDSU in scoring. Did You Know? San Diego State boasts one of the nation s most improved RPI rankings. Coming off a split with Air Force and New Mexico on the road last week, the entered the week with an RPI ranking of 139 a jump of 90 spots over last season. SDSU closed out the 1999-00 campaign as the nation s 229th-ranked team, according to Collegerpi.com. A Win Thursday Would... Improve San Diego State to 11-8 overall and even its record at 3-3 in Mountain West Conference play. Give SDSU 11 wins on the year, its most in a single season under head coach Barb Smith. Snap a two-game losing streak and prevent the first three-game slide of the season. End a two-game losing streak versus Wyoming. The have not beaten the Cowgirls since sweeping both games during the 1996-97 season. Improve SDSU to 13-5 all time versus Wyoming, 8-1 at home. Junior Tanisha Knight and senior Anita Bundage both cleared a team-high eight rebounds. Six of Knight s eight came on the offensive end. Win Total Equals Best Under Smith With 10 wins so far this season, San Diego State has already exceeded its win total for all of 1999-00 when the finished the year 9-19 (4-10 MWC). At 10-8 (2-3 MWC) San Diego State has also equaled its highest single-season win total of the Barb Smith era. SDSU finished Smith s inaugural season 1997-98 season at 10-15. Head Coach Barb Smith Armed with a new contract, SDSU head coach Barb Smith is in her fourth season on Montezuma Mesa and owns a career record of 36-61 (.371). Prior to taking over as SDSU's fifth head coach in 1997, Smith spent nine years as the top assistant at Colorado. During her tenure at CU, the Buffaloes won an average of 24 games per season, five Big 8 Conference championships and made eight NCAA Tournament appearances. She is a 1986 graduate of Ohio State, where she was a fouryear starter at point guard and led the Buckeyes to three NCAA berths. Page 4 Post Six- Non-Conference Turnaround San Diego State s 8-5 non-conference record is a dramatic improvement from a year ago when the were just 5-8 in their first 13 games. The victory at Texas A&M- Corpus Christi completed a six-game turnaround over last year s non-conference finish, despite playing eight on the road. Last year, SDSU played eight of its 13 pre-conference games in Cox Arena. Road Warrior Tradition Returning To Montezuma Mesa San Diego State won its fifth game away from campus last week at Air Force. The victory moved SDSU to 5-4 on the road this year, including a 60-47 win over Alcorn State at the Unilever Lady Tiger Classic, before SDSU s loss at New Mexico evened the road record at 5-5. Through 18 games, the have already posted more wins away from Cox Arena this season (five) than they did in each of the last two years combined. It is also the first time San Diego State has won four pre-conference games away from campus since the 1995-96 season when the went 4-2. San Diego State has not won five or more games away from campus since winning 12 during the 1996-97 season. Home Cookin Not So Bad Though In addition to its improvement on the road, San Diego State has also performed better at home this season, posting a 5-3 mark in Cox Arena, including a split in its first Mountain West Conference homestand of the year. Last year, the were 7-7 at home, including a 3-4 mark in league games. Deuces Are Wild Thursday Night An Aztec win Thursday would end a number of two-game losing streaks. Among them: two straight losses overall, two straight losses at home and two straight losses to Wyoming. Learning To Win The Close Ones Barb Smith pointed to it at the beginning of the season as a key to the 2000-01 campaign. After wining just 5-of-15 games decided by 10 points or less last season, SDSU appears to be learning how to win the close ones this year. Defense Hits Bump In The Road In Last Two s What has happened to the defense in the last two games? After holding nine straight opponents under 65 points, San Diego State s last two opponents have each poured in over 80 points. In SDSU s first 16 games of the season, only Missouri eclipsed the 80-point plateau, defeating the 89-69 in Columbia. Defense Was Winning Edge If San Diego State is to get things back on track this weekend, it ll have to get back to the kind of defensive effort it showed prior to the New Mexico game. Prior to giving up 86 points and allowing the Lobos to connect on 49 percent from the floor, the had held nine of their previous 12 opponents below 60 points. During that span, SDSU opponents shot just 36.0 percent (131-of-364) from the floor, including a 27.4 percent (29-of-106) from three-point distance. The record in those 12 games: 9-3. More on SDSU s Defense San Diego State has allowed just one opponent to shoot better than 50 percent this season UNLV though both Missouri (.492) and New Mexico (.491) came close. In fact, the have held 10 of their last 13 opponents to 39-percent shooting or less. Cal Poly became the third SDSU foe this season to shoot less than 30 percent from the field on Jan. 2. Earlier this year, the held both Alcorn State and Cal State Fullerton below 30 percent shooting from the floor. Still Hard To Get The Three... Through 18 games, San Diego State remains the toughest team in the Mountain West Conference to sink a three-pointer against. Heading into Thursday s game versus Wyoming, Aztec opponents are shooting just 30.1 percent from beyond the arc and, in the last 10 games, have connected on only 37 of their last 148 attempts (25 percent). SDSU has held three opponents San Jose State, Cal State Fullerton and California without a three-point basket....but Not For Air Force In Clune Arena After watching Air Force connect on 9-of-22 (.409) threes last year in Colorado Springs, the Falcons were back at it in this year s first meeting, hitting on 9-of-17 (.529) attempts from beyond the arc, including a blistering 7-of-9 (.778) in the first half. It is the best three-point performance of the season by an Aztec opponent. Things returned to normal in The Pit and at home versus UNLV as New Mexico sank just 6-of-20 attempts (30 percent) and the Lady Rebels connected on only 2-of-11 tries (18 percent). Five-Finger Discounts One of San Diego State s most amazing turnarounds this season has been in the steals category. Through 18 games, the rank second in the Mountain West Conference in steals per game at 9.50. SDSU picked off 10 against UNLV and a season-high 18 versus Cal State Fullerton its most since snatching 22 against Fresno State on Feb. 24, 1999 and now has notched double-digit steals in seven games on the year. Last season, SDSU averaged just 8.5 spg, good for seventh in the eight-team league, and finished with double-figures in steals in only 10-of-28 games. A trio of entered the week ranked among the Mountain West s leaders in steals per game: Tanisha Knight (8th), Shannon Lee (9th) and Jamey Cox (12th). Turnovers Still The Key Despite struggling in the turnover department against UNLV (season-high 34), San Diego State has still had fewer miscues than its opponent in 10-of-18 contests. The are 8-2 in those games and just 2-5 with more miscues. Lee Tops 300 Senior Shannon Lee became just the sixth Aztec to top 300 career assists last Saturday with four against UNLV. She now ranks sixth on SDSU s career chart with 302. Cox Eclipses 500 Sophomore Jamey Cox surpassed the 500-point plateau last week with her 11-point effort versus Brigham Young. It was the 41st game of her Aztec career. She is on pace to become SDSU s first 1,000-point scorer since Jodi Nowlin-Tres in 1997 and could reach the mark as early as the end of next season. Bundage had eight more versus UNLV and enters the Wyoming game with 510 career boards, just 25 shy of SDSU s top 10 in career rebounding. Bundage Also On A Roll From The Floor Bundage, who has started for SDSU in the last three games, also leads the in field goal percentage this season, connecting on over 55 percent of her shots this season, including 75 percent from beyond the arc in the last four games. Getting That Scoring Touch Back Jamey Cox appears to have regained her scoring touch. After averaging just 3.5 ppg during a four-game stretch from Nov. 25 through Dec. 6, Cox has finished in double figures in seven of her last nine games, leading SDSU in scoring four times and averaging 11.4 ppg. Last season, Cox averaged 13.7 ppg en route to all-newcomer team honors. Scho-Time Could Return To Cox Thursday Junior guard/forward Missy Schomaker is listed as probable for Thursday s game versus Wyoming. Schomaker dressed for Saturday s UNLV game, but was still to tender to play due to a back injury suffered in practice prior to the Air Force/New Mexico trip. Schomaker is averaging 6.4 ppg and 3.4 rpg but has not played since Jan. 13 vs. Utah. She s Baaack! After missing all of last season with a torn left ACL and the first 11 games of the current campaign with a severely broken left thumb (39 games in all), senior Sophia Sledge finally returned to the lineup at Jan. 7 at Cal Poly.
